Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.

Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access(入口) to the Internet. Besides, they will be able to use e-mail to "speak" with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.

At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. In the summer of 1885, nine-year-old Joseph Meister was very ill. He had been attacked by a sick dog that had rabies(狂犬病), a very dangerous disease. His doctor tried to help him, but there was no cure for rabies at that time. The doctor told Joseph’s parents that perhaps there was one man who could save Joseph’s life. His name was Louis Pasteur.

When I was 14, I left school with learning disabilities and decided to surf the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii. One morning, I met an old man, a bum, on the street corner. He asked me if I was running away from home. I told him, “Not exactly, sir, because my father had given me a ride to the train station and said, “ It is important to follow your dream, son.”

After talking for a while, he told me that he had something to show me and share with me. We walked several blocks until we reached a public library.
