The day before Mother’s Day this year, the police received a call from an old woman because her husband had gone missing from their home. He has Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆症).
The police found Melvyn Amrine two blocks (街区) away from his home. He couldn’t tell the police where he lived.
However, he was able to understand where he was going clearly: he was buying his wife Doris flowers for Mother’s Day falling on Sunday. He has done that since she gave birth to their first child.
Three years ago, Melvyn Amrine was told he had the disease. Since then his illness has become worse and worse. His wife has to look after him. She is sad to see the disease take away her husband’s memories.
The police told Melvyn’s family they would take him straight home—but Melvyn Amrine didn’t agree to go with them.
“He was pretty adamant (坚决的),” Officer Troy Dillard told the reporter. “He wasn’t going home until he got those flowers. He wanted to buy flowers for his wife, because tomorrow was Mother’s Day,” Officer Brian Grigsby added.
So the police decided to help Melvyn Amrine achieve his goal. They stopped at a local supermarket and helped him choose a bunch (束) of beautiful roses. “We had to get those flowers. We didn’t have a choice,” Grigsby said.
