Nowadays there are different ideas about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is good for social development. However, others say that competition is bad and that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.
I have taught many children. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death events. In their mind what they really want is going for success, the development of many other qualities is sadly forgotten.
However, while some seem to be lost on the way to success, others take an opposite opinion. Many people are strongly against competition. Among them, most are young people who have suffered from such pressure from their parents. They seem to look for failure by not trying to win or achieve success. ____△____, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesn’t matter because I really didn’t try.” They don’t want to admit(承认)that if they have really tried and lost, they would mean more.
Clearly, this belief(信念) is the same as that of those who try to prove(证明)themselves. Both come from the wrong belief that self-confidence depends on how well one does by comparing with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. If such fear begins to be unimportant, we can have a better knowledge of competition.

Eric Liddell was known as the flying Scotsman(苏格兰人)because he ran so fast. But he is most remembered as a man of honor and bravery.
He was born in 1902 in Tianjin, north China. Eric lived in China until the age of five. After that his parents sent him to school in England. In 1920, Ericwent to the University of Edinburgh to study science.
Sports played a large part in his life and he was chosen to be part of Britain’s 1924 Olympic team. The games were in Paris. At the Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the 200-meter race and then a gold medal in the 400-meter race, setting a world record.
Though famous in Scotland, Eric still loved and remembered China. He wanted to go back to the country where he was born. In 1925, he went to China and worked as a middle school teacher in Tianjin. Then he went to Hebei Province to help the poor people there.
During the Second World War, Eric chose to stay. He wanted to help the sick and give hope to the Chinese people. In 1945, Eric was very ill. He had a chance to leave China but he refused. Instead he gave it to a woman. This great man died six months before the end of the war. Many people still remember his service to the Chinese people.

During my stay at an orphanage (孤儿院) at the age of 9, a gentleman came and taught us how to do wooden art pieces.
I remember my first project—a small table. I was so proud of it that I regarded it as a wonder. It was beautiful and it took me six weeks to finish it. I could hardly wait to give it to Mother Winters as a gift. She was always strict with us.
As the tables were not dry from the clear coating, the man told us to wait a few days before taking them to our dormitories(寝室). But I was just so happy that I couldn’t wait to carry my table back, smiling from ear to ear.
When I reached the dormitory, I placed the little table beside my bed. When Mother Winters entered, I was admiring it.
“Were you supposed to bring this home?” she asked.
“No, ma’am,” I replied with my head down.
She ordered me to throw the table out and so I did. After she left, I immediately opened the door to get it back. It was dirty all over. I brushed it and cried, but the dirt would not come off. I hid the table in my closet. However, a year later during a cleaning-up, it was discovered. Painfully, I had to give the table to Mother Winters, thinking that she would throw it away.
Thirty years later at a party, I learned that Mother Winters was living nearby, so I drove up to see her. We talked cheerfully for long. As I was about to leave, she asked me to come down to her basement(地下室) to get something important. I followed her into a dark corner. She picked something up. As she turned around, I could see that she was holding a little table.
Mother Winters kept the little table that I had given up for lost so long ago.
Today, I look at that table with bittersweet memories but full of thanks to Mother Winters, who kept the table for a young orphan who valued it so much.
