Ever since Greg was a little boy, he had watched his grandfather carve(雕刻) small wooden figures(木偶). In a short time, his grandfather could change a piece of wood into a wonderful work of art. Greg often wished that he could create wonderful little wooden figures as his grandfather did.

One day, Greg’s grandfather called the boy into his room. “Today is the day that you begin to learn the lost art of carving.” Greg couldn’t believe his ears. He sat beside his grandfather. The smell of the wood filled his nose, and he loved that. Grandfather told him the names of the different tools he used to create the figures.

After the introduction to the tools was over, Greg picked up a piece of wood and started to carve. He worked for hours that day, trying to learn his grandfather’s skill. Although his small wooden figure was far from perfect, both Greg and his grandfather were quite proud of the work Greg had done. “I will put it on my desk,” Greg’s grandfather told him. For some students, getting better grades can seem like an impossible task sometimes. With the challenges(挑战) of school, just paying attention in class or studying hard isn’t always enough. But what if there were other ways for students to improve their grades? For parents and students who have ever wondered if this is possible, now you can rest easy. Research suggests that a person who likes doing activities can improve their grades.

Scientists think that those students who are active are not just exercising their bodies, but also exercising their brains(大脑). In turn, they can be able to improve their grades at school.

In the most recent study, researchers found that when children played for half an hour each day, they were better at organizing(组织) their schoolwork as well as doing project work and learning traditionally “difficult” subjects, such as maths.

What does this mean for children who aren’t active? Researchers think that if kids don’t get enough activities, they are going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to school performance.

In the research experiment, a group of children skipped with ropes(跳绳), played basketball and did a number of other games or exercises. Another group of children didn’t do any activities. They took part in testing both before experiment and after the experiment. Testing was mainly for maths and reading skills. Results showed that the children in the activity group did better on the tests than those who had no activity.

All work and no play will not only make Jack a dull(迟钝的) boy, but will also negatively(消极地) affect his grades in school, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Parents complain(抱怨) children today are actually less active and they always worry about their grades. Dr. Belton, an expert, said, “If you’d like to see your kids do better in school, have them close their books, set down their pencils and go outside to play.”

We got up at six in the morning on that summer day, because Grandpa was to take me to the park. With Mum, Aunt and three cousins, it took two taxis to get us all to the park.

Everyone was prepared to get on the big bus and see the wild animals in the park. As the bus moved, I saw many animals. There were tigers, lions, bears, monkeys, pandas and elephants. Some were lying down; some were standing there; some others were walking. And none of them were afraid of people.

After seeing the wild animals, we had lunch at the wild animal restaurant. We then watched goat fighting and horse fighting shows. The park had many other shows besides the fighting shows. For example, there was a sea lion show. We watched mountain goats walking on a steel wire(钢丝), monkeys riding bikes, and tigers jumping through hoops of fire(火圈).

The most unforgettable thing at the zoo was that I got in a tiger cage and took a picture with a tiger. I was very scared at that time, but when I saw a lot of people taking pictures, I was not so afraid. Grandpa said I had more expressions than the tiger.
