Antarctica(南极洲) is known for being a vast land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. Despite (尽管) this, the continent is slowly starting to turn warm. According to the Guardian, the Antarctic has registered (登记) a new high temperature for the first time on record, prompting fears of climate instability(不稳定性) in the world’s iciest place.

On Feb 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75 on the icy continent of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the previous record of 19.8, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.

This record-breaking reading was taken at a monitoring (监测) station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian soil scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was documented during a 20-year-long research project. The focus of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永久冻土) within the region. Permafrost is soil that stays frozen for at least two years. Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer stressed that “We can’t use this to anticipate (预测) climatic changes in the future. It’s simply a signal that something different is happening in that area.”

But in fact, the last high temperature reading was in the 19 range. These higher temperatures can cause ice and glaciers (冰川) in Antarctic regions to melt. The Antarctic peninsula (半岛) —the long finger of land(狭长地带) that stretches towards Argentina(阿根廷)—is most dramatically affected. Scientists saw glaciers that have retreated by more than 100 meters in Discovery Bay where the snow melted in little more than a week, leaving dark exposed rock. This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can threaten the safety of coastal areas. It’s believed to be behind an alarming decline of more than 50 percent in chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) colonies, which are dependent on sea ice.

Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to fix.

The third preparatory(预备的) meeting for the Shenzhen First Session International Hydrogen and Fuel Cell(燃料电池) Leaders Summit was held on November 28 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Nearly 100 experts attended it. The theme of the meeting was “Energy revolution(革命), hydrogen () changes the world”.

The meeting focused on the use and safety of hydrogen. In the meeting, experts discussed the direction of developing the hydrogen industry in China, the basic research of hydrogen, the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology, the new way to develop hydrogen and fuel cells in Shenzhen and so on.

Hydrogen is secondly energy. And it’s produced by primary energy (一次能源). For example, if we use some energy to produce electricity, then we can use the electricity to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel cells have a few advantages. Firstly, they take only a few minutes to recharge(充电). Secondly, they aren’t affected by temperature. Thirdly, hydrogen is very safe, safer than gasoline. At present, because of climate change, the world is developing this energy. It doesn’t contain carbon. Many countries have made a plan for hydrogen. Japan, Germany and the US are the leading ones. China has used different policies to encourage the development of hydrogen since 2016. It will become a kind of very important energy like electricity in the future.

Yu Yiping, chairman of the board of directors at Scientific Valley Group, said, “In order to prepare the summit, we’ve done lots of work. We went to other countries, such as Germany, France and the US, to learn experience. We also went to California, the US to learn about the hydrogen production, storage and transportation, and the construction of hydrogen refueling(补给燃料) stations.” Du Zheng, vice director of the Nanshan District Science, Technology and Innovation Bureau, said, “We are pushing forward the development of hydrogen in three ways: the planning of the hydrogen industry, the policy guidance and the building of some basic facilities, such as hydrogen refueling stations.”

We all know that zebras have stripes (条纹). However, both animal experts and zebra fans all over the world haven’t known the reason for centuries. But now it appears that some researchers in California may have finally solved the age-old mystery!

In order to find the reason why zebras have stripes, a team of scientists led by Professor Tim Caro set to work. They began by comparing the thickness, location, and the stripes on seven species of zebras that live in various geographic locations. They then examined some factors that may continuously affect zebras, such as their natural enemies, the temperatures of their living places and the small insects around them like flies. To their amazement, the only factor that was linked with the stripes was the annoying flies. The zebras with the most obvious and the largest number of stripes mostly live in areas with more flies.

But that led to another question: why are zebras the only kind of animal smart enough to develop the stripes? After all, there are plenty of other animals like horses and donkeys, which are facing the same trouble. Upon closer examination of the black and white animals, the researchers noticed that unlike the others, zebras have very short coats of hair, making them particularly easy to be bitten () by the flies!

While Tim says that this mystery is finally solved, it has given rise to a new one. Why are these fearless flies that have no fears of attacking animals that are thousands of times bigger, afraid of black and white stripes? If you have any answer, be sure to add it to the comments below. It may help the professor with his new research!

For the most part of my life, I have lived in a small town in northern Arizona. As I got older, it seemed as if my town got smaller.

All things I could see in the town were bad. It looked ugly, small and was filled with terrible people. I wanted to be in new places with bigger chances and to meet new people. That was exactly what I did. I moved to the city of Phoenix to go to college and worked hard to achieve what I had dreamed of.

For the first year when I was away from home, I wanted to stay away and never go back. When people were taking a trip to my hometown, I would always question “Why would you like to do that? It’s so ugly.” All I had towards my hometown was negative feelings.

However, after being away for about three years, my perspective has completely changed. I have nothing but love for my hometown — its beauty, and the sentimental value (感情价值) that it holds.

After all, it’s where I’m from. Yes, there are bad things, but there are also some good ones: Dad raced the train on the way to school; Mum let us stop for ice cream every Friday after school to celebrate the end of the week; I walked around downtown with friends in high school, thinking we were cool.

It might take being away from something for you to truly appreciate it. It’s true when people say that distance makes the heart grow fonder(温柔的). Now I visit my hometown every chance I get. Even if I am no longer living there, it will always hold a piece of my heart.
