The winter of 1948 was very difficult for our family of eight living in Knoxville, Tennessee. Unluckily, Dad became ill and was soon out of a job. I was only 8 years old and my younger brother Buddy Earl was 7. After school it was our responsibility to pick coal that fell from the coal cars along the railways.

One day, A train stopped for a short time because of a wreck(损坏). My brother and I were digging around in the snow when the train’s fireman (司炉工) shouted to us: “Why are you boys digging in the snow? Are you looking for gold?” He laughed.

“No, sir,” I replied, “We are looking for coal.”

“Why doesn’t your daddy buy coal so you can stay away from the trains? It’s really dangerous for two little kids here.”

“Our daddy is very sick and we have no money to buy food, much less coal,” I answered.

The fireman turned and went inside, and my brother and I began searching for coal again.

“Hey!” a voice sounded behind us. “You two bring that coal basket over here. I’ve got something for you.”

The fireman took the basket from us and filled it with clean coal. We were so excited that we knew we’d be able to go home early that day. He smiled the kindest and warmest smile I had ever seen.

According to a new survey, student safety has become a big problem. Now in many big cities of China, many schools start a new lesson: self—protection. Students like this lesson because there are no exams or boring classes. And they can learn how to save lives and know how to stop danger before it really happens.

Lin Li, a teacher from Yantai, gives young students advice on how to deal with danger.

If you are in a traffic accident

If a car hits you, you should remember the car number. If it is a bicycle, try to call your parents before you let the rider go. This is because you don’t know how seriously you are hurt.

If it is raining hard and there is lightning

Don’t stay in high places and stay away from trees.

When there is a fire

Get away as fast as you can. Put wet things on your body and try to find an exit. Do not take the lift.

If someone is drowning

If you can’t swim, don’t get into the water. Cry out for help.

Remember that danger is never as far away as you think. Take care of yourself at all times!

If you are robbed(抢劫)

Keep calm. If you cannot cry for help or run away, give the robber your money. Try to remember what the robber looks like and tell the police later.

1.Many schools have started a new lesson on self—protection because it is a big problem.

2.If you are hit by a car, you are supposed to remember what the driver looks like.

3.When you are in the rain, you must stay close to the trees and stay in low places.

4.You should shout for help if your money and treasures are robbed by someone.

5.We can learn how to protect ourselves if we are in danger from the passage.
