Many people say dolphins are very itelli...

Many people say dolphins are very itelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand, and learn things quickly. But are they smart like humans or are they more like cats or dogs? Dolphins use their brains differently from people. But scientists say dolphin intelligence and human intelligence are similar in some ways. How?

Like humans, every dolphin has its own name. The name is a special whistle. Each dolphin chooses a specific whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Actually, scientists think dolphins, like people, “talk” to each other about a lot of things, such as their age, their feelings, or finding food. And, like humans, dolphins use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. But understanding their conversations is not easy for humans. No one speaks “dolphin” yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.

Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups, and they often join others from different groups to play games and have fun—just like people. In fact, playing together is something only intelligent animals do.

Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species make plans to get something they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an interesting strategy to get food. When fish are near a boat, dolphins show signs to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. What is the advantage for the dolphins in doing so? They get to eat some of the fish that escape from the net.

The name is a special whistle.”可知,海豚使用特别的口哨作为名字。故选B。 2.词义猜测题。根据“Dolphins and humans are similar in another way,”海豚和人类在另一方面是相似的。此处的both species是上文的dolphins 和 humans,而海豚和人类属于两个物种,故species意为“物种”。故选C。 3.细节理解题。根据“They get to eat some of the fish that escape from the net.” 句子“But scientists say dolphin intelligence and human intelligence are similar in some ways.”但是科学家说海豚的智力和人类的智力在某些方面是相似的。可知,这句话是本文的主旨句,下文主要围绕海豚和人类的相似之处展开的。故选C。

There was once a man called Mr. Flower, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions. He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flower's glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen were often tempted to throw a stone at one of Mr. Flower's glass-houses. So Mr. Flower did his best to be in or near his glass-house at the beginning and end of the school day.

But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flower had tried in many ways to protect. his glass, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster; but this had not done any good. He had tried to drive away the boys that threw stones into his garden, but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden, so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found others.

At last Mr. Flower had a good idea. He put up a large notice made of good, strong wood, some meters away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE.
