例文 Honesty is gold. It means telling the truth and being fair. Last year, when I took the math exam, I had difficulty working out a problem with a high score, which could influence my ranking in the class. Feeling anxious, I found the paper of the student in front of me could be seen clearly. I was excited and about to copy it. However, I realized it was shameful to cheat in exams. It violated the principle of honesty. So I stopped. Although I had the thought to copy the student's answers, I am still an upright student. Honesty, which is the traditional virtue of Chinese people, can make our life easier and more harmonious. Never lose it and be an honest person. 【解析】 题干解读:本文是一篇话题作文,要求你以李华的身份,用英语写一篇短文给英文网站开展的以“诚信”为主题的征文活动投稿,谈谈你自己讲诚信的一次经历,以及你有何收获。

Study or Learn?

English language learners use the verbs “study” and “learn” all the time. Yet, they often are unsure which to choose in a situation. Our subject today comes from Salah of Yemen. The writer asks:

Question:

I would like to know the difference between “study” and “learn.” Thanks!

                                                                                                – Salah, Yemen

Answer:

Hello, Salah, and thanks for your note!

Let’s begin with the dictionary meaning of each word. These are from the Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary:

To study means to read, memorize facts or attend school in order to learn about a subject.

To learn means to gain knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught or experiencing something.

So, studying is just one way of learning. But it is not the only way.

Learn

Sometimes, we learn through experience. For example, if you travel to Thailand, you can visit a lot of sights, try the traditional foods and talk to the local people. By the time you leave, you will have gained a lot of knowledge about the country. So, you can say, “I learned so much about Thailand!”

You could not say, “I studied so much about Thailand!” because your actions did not mainly involve reading, memorizing facts, taking a course, attending school or something similar.

Study

In addition, when you study something, you have not learned it yet.

And, sometimes, you can even study something without learning it. For example, if you say, “I studied English,” it may mean you took English classes. Or maybe you tried to teach yourself through an app or language website.

But maybe you had difficulty with this and still do not know how to speak the language. In that situation, you could not say, “I learned English,” because that would mean you had gained enough knowledge to use it.

Examples

If the difference between “learn” and “study” is not clear yet, here are a few sentences that compare them:

They learned how to write stories in the new writing class.

They spent time studying the techniques of story-writing.

Where did you learn how to bake so well?

Did you study baking in school?

And one last tip for remembering the difference is this expression: “I studied but I did not learn anything.”

And that’s Ask a Teacher. I’m Alice Bryant.

1.Who are often unsure of how to choose “study” or “learn” in a situation?

2.What does study mean from the Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary?

3.When can you say “I learned so much about Thailand”?

4.What do you mean by saying “I studied English”?

5.Which expression can help to remember the difference between “study” and “learn”?

The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day. Celebrated in the US, it has also become popular in China as a way to express thankfulness to mothers with gifts and greetings. Some experts suggest China should have its own Mother’s Day, instead of “borrowing” from the US.

Tailorsas: This is not a big problem, as long as you have appreciation(感激) for your mom who raised you and offered everything that she had, every day can be a Mother’s Day. You don’t have to give her a present, just tell her you love her, care about her, go shopping with her, cook for her, even the smallest thing can be affective.

Michael: If you look at Mother’s Day, or any other day, from the standpoint of “borrowing” from America or any other country, I think the whole point of having such a day has been missed. Why not focus on honoring mothers around the world rather than worrying about “borrowing” from anyone? If Mother’s Day is American, changing the date you have it won’t make it any less. If you think like that, then, it just becomes a knockoff(冒牌)holiday.

Senorita: I think maybe it is those retail businessmen who want as many special days as possible, so that they can earn more money. On Mother’s Day, things are double the price than usual and it is super difficult to book a table for dining. Something with Chinese traditions sounds nice, but I hope the special day would light our love for mothers, instead of following the fashion and fall into the trap(圈套) dug by businessmen.

Francisco: It doesn’t matter if we have our own day as long as you show your love to your mom. When I grew up, especially when I became a mother, I realized how much my mom has sacrificed(牺牲) selflessly and how great she really is! Mothers deserve not only our respect but also our care and love as well. We Chinese like to keep everything to ourselves, even though we love deep in our hearts. We, more often than not, don’t express it directly. In this regard, we should learn from Americans. Say “I love you” whenever you feel it and give her a hug or have a heart-to-heart chat or do some housework. What you can give your mother is not very important at all. What matters is that you should do something to show your love, not just on Mother’s Day.

1.The underlined word “affective” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”.

A.warm B.common

C.reasonable D.international

2.What can we infer from Francisco’s words?

A.She thinks highly of Mother’s Day in the US.

B.She is all for creating a Chinese Mother’s Day.

C.She is opposed to celebrating Mother’s Day with Americans in the world.

D.She thinks it’s important to show love to mothers no matter what day it is.

3.What can we learn from the passage?

A.“Borrowing” Mother’s Day from the US is really a big problem.

B.Businessmen may benefit greatly from the Chinese Mother’s Day.

C.Honoring mothers around the world will lead to a knockoff holiday.

D.Chinese like to express the feeling of love for their mothers directly.

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Does Mother’s Day really matter?

B.Do people really need Mother’s Day?

C.Does China need its own Mother’s Day?

D.Do we need to change the date of Mother’s Day?

At night, you fall asleep while listening to beautiful music. In the morning, you are woken up by the singing of birds outside. You can enjoy all of these things because of one important organ—the ears. March 3 is Ear Care Day. It helps us remember the importance of our ears and encourages us to take good care of them.

You may wonder: how do the ears work? The ear has three different parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear is the part you can see. It collects sound around you. The sound then travels down to the middle ear, the inner ear and then to your brain.

Your ears never stop working, even when you are asleep! Your ears continue hearing sounds, but your brain just ignores(忽视) them. That’s why you may sometimes wake up suddenly in the middle of the night—your brain hears something, but you don’t know what it is, since you are asleep.

More surprisingly, ears even help with tasting food. Of course, you don’t actually taste food with your ears. But there are nerves running through the middle ear that connect the tongue(舌头) to the brain. If something happens to your ears, you may have a hard time telling different tastes apart, according to the website of People’s Daily.

The ears are truly important organs with many functions(功能,作用). You should make sure to protect your own ears as well as you can. There are some Dos and Don’ts you need to know.

First of all, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen on your ears. And during winter, cover your ears with a hat or a scarf. Secondly, dry your ears with a towel after swimming or having a bath. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear.

Besides, don’t listen to music on your earphones for too long. Follow the 60: 60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of the maximum volume(最大音量) for no more than 60 minutes a day. Also, it’s not a good idea to share earphones with friends. When you have only one earphone, you might turn the volume up too high, since one earphone isn’t loud enough.

1.Which is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The outer ear is the most important part.

B.We can still know what is happening when we are asleep.

C.We’d better not use one earphone when we listen to music.

D.We can still taste food with ears if our tongue doesn’t work.

2.We can protect our ears by_________.

A.wearing no sunscreen on sunny days

B.listening to the singing of birds outside

C.washing our ears with a towel after swimming

D.covering our ears with a scarf in cold weather

3.What are paragraph 2, 3 and 4 mainly about?

A.Why we celebrate Ear Care Day. B.The protections of ears.

C.Why we can hear sound. D.The functions of ears.
