Do you know Beau Jessup? A 16-year-old British girl gets 48,000 pounds from a website she made to give Chinese babies English names. Beau Jessup came up with the idea after her family visit to China. They were out for a meal with friends when she was asked to give an English name to a baby. In China, it is considered important to have an English name for future study or study abroad (在国外) and so on. Beau told us that when she was first asked to name a baby, she was surprised. But after hearing of some “strange” names, she decided to act. Beau said, “In China, many names that people may use are selom used in the UK. They usually use English names from films like Snow White Or Beauty and Beast to name their baby. In order to solve the problem, she starts to set up the website.
First, users should choose the gender(性别)of the baby on her website. Beau provides twelve personality traits(特质理论) such as clever, honest, confident and so on. “Special Name” needs the users to pick five of them which they hope their baby will grow into. Then Beau picks their English names according to the personality traits. The chosen names are then shared with family and friends on We-chat to help make the final decision. Finally they pay Beau one pound.
Beau says it’s quite strange to know she’s named more than 200 000 babies. The site’s success has been a surprise for her.
