Students from two schools, The City Scho...

Students from two schools, The City School in Nigeria and Heathland School in the UK, recently took part in a project to compare their education and find out about student life in a very different country. As expected, they found many differences but also a few things that are similar.

The City School is in a district just outside Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. The school is surrounded  (环绕) by big trees and grassy fields that the children use to play football on. Heathland School is in a quiet suburb not far from central Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

Most of the 580 students at The City School are taught in pleasant one-storey yellow-brick buildings although some building work still needs to be done. Heathland School dates from the 1950s but some new facilities (设施) have been added recently.

Although The City School receives financial (财政的) help from the government, students still

have to pay school fees. It’s hard to find the money sometimes and quite a few parents struggle to keep their children in school. Unlike the Nigerian school, students at Heathland School only have  to buy their uniforms and pay for some extra activities.

Teachers and students at The City School are proud of their library and the science laboratory. They say that there’s not a school in the area that can match it. The school concentrates (专注于) on traditional subjects like Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry because this will make it easier for students to get into a good profession. Practical subjects like Farm Technology are also popular.

Heathland School recently became a performing arts college. This means that in addition to subjects like English and Mathematics, the school also offers lessons in Dance, Drama and Music  as choices for all students. There is a new dance studio which can also be used as a theatre.

Students in both schools found the project very interesting and hope to do further joint projects in the future.

I remember the day that I was changed into a new class and I felt unwanted.

The first day that I was in my class, my table didn’t talk to me and I didn’t either. The next  day in that class, the teacher let me sit next to this girl who had her pierced ears, lips and nose. She said, “You’re new to class, aren’t you? Well, my name is Ashley.” I looked at her for a second and then said, “Hi.” She knew that I was shy. She introduced me to the rest of the table loudly, who didn’t look nice, but then again I thought Ashley was wild when I saw her up close.

That whole week the other girls at my table would look at me like a hungry animal who was to kill its prey (猎物) and they whisper to one another about my looks and how I wasn’t wanted in this class.

One day I felt upset and Ashley asked, “What’s wrong?” I didn’t answer but she found out that I went through bullying (威逼), and depression. Then I told her what was up. She said, “I thought you were a rich girl with good grades and no problems, but I was wrong.” The rest of the table heard about the real me and they apologized for what they had said.

Later, Ashley introduced me to new people who had gone through the same things that I had. Thanks to Ashley, I was no longer alone in the world. And that same day I met Perla, my best friend now, who taught me not to judge others on their appearance. I really understood it from Ashley.

Thanks to an online activity and a stranger with a strong sense of romance and a strong will, an old box full of 70-year-old love letters was returned to its very first owner.

Twenty years ago, a woman named Cherry Vallance got the letters from her neighbor who found them in the top floor of his house and wanted to  throw them away. Luckily, they ended up in Cherry’s house where they were once again forgotten until her daughter, Kim Rowe, discovered them again.
