Cooking was once regarded as a necessary part of education. But in recent years, it has become less important in schools. As a result, basic cooking and food preparation skills are being lost. It is also making more children overweight, as parents use too much fast food is harmful to their health.
The government is worried and is looking for ways to solve the problem. A new law has been made. It requires all secondary schools (中学)to offer cooking lessons to students aged from 11 to 14 years old. They hope that this will encourage people to cook instead of eating ready meals, fast food and snacks.
Students will learn to cook twice a week. They will learn to use simple and fresh ingredients to prepare healthy, tasty food, following instructions. Schools are also setting up cooking clubs all over the country. The clubs will provide more children with the chance to learn to cook. The children can learn to cook many kinds of food in the clubs.
There are still difficulties. Head teachers are worried about the things they will need for the cooking. And about 15% of schools do not have kitchens and there are not enough teachers.
The speaker from the government promises to train 800 teachers and to give schools million pounds a year to help children from poorer families to pay for ingredients.

Did you take part in a camp last summer? There are so many summer camps and not all of them are the same. To choose which camp is best for you, first you must do a bit of research.
Maybe you've never thought about it before, but every great summer camp has the same main goals—opportunity, challenge and growth. They are results that all campers are trying to achieve.
Opportunity means you can get a situation in which it is possible for you to do something special. It also makes you special because other kids don't have the same opportunity. For example, if you are interested in writing, then you can choose to join a journalism (新闻)camp. You may have the opportunity of meeting famous journalists there.
Challenge means you are given a task. You must finish the task and succeed in dealing with the challenge. Then you will have a sense of achievement. For example, you could take a lifeguard course at some summer camps. If you pass the exam, then you will receive a certificate (证书)to become a real lifeguard.
This also leads to the third and most important goal of very great summer camp—personal growth. It doesn't mean growing taller and stronger or more beautiful. It means seeing yourself improve, learning something new and doing something you didn't know or believe you could do before. It also means becoming more confident (自信的)in yourself.
So in the future when choosing your next summer camp, remember to ask yourself: Is it a special opportunity? Is it a challenge? Will I grow?
But what about friendship, fun and joy? These will all happen naturally when you have the right goals at summer camps!

When I was a twelve-year-old newspaper boy, an old lady who was my customer lived near my house. I have even forgotten her name. On a winter afternoon, I was playing with my friend near the old lady's backyard. I found a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out, but the stone hit a small window of her house. Suddenly, I saw the old lady standing behind the window. We knew we were in trouble, and ran away quickly. We were scared about that we would be caught and didn't worry about the old lady with the broken window in winter.
The next morning, she was still greeting me with a smile when I gave her the newspaper. I made up my mind to save my money to correct my mistake. After four weeks, I had ten dollars. I put the money in an envelope (信封)with a note explaining everything and hoped that the ten dollars would cover the cost for repairing the window.
I waited until it was dark, and put the envelope in her door. The next day, I handed the old lady her newspaper and she thanked me for it as usual and gave me a bag of cookies. After eating several cookies, I found an envelope and pulled it out. When 1 opened it, I was surprised. Inside were the ten dollars and a short note that said, "I'm proud of you." I smiled in relief. For example, a basic aircraft carrier is made of 60,000 tons of steel. It also uses complex(复杂的) technologies. Finally, it takes years to build one. Today, not many countries own an aircraft carrier or have the ability to build one.
