Some years ago on a hot summer day in south Florida, a little boy decided to go for a swim in the lake behind his house. He ran out of the back door, leaving behind shoes, socks and shirt as he went.
He flew into the water, not realizing that as he swam toward the middle of the lake, an alligator (鳄鱼) was getting close. The mother in the house was looking out of the window and saw the two as they got closer and closer together. In great fear, she ran toward the water, shouting to her son as loudly as she could. Hearing her voice, the little boy made a U-turn to swim to his mother. It was too late. Just as he reached her, the alligator reached him. The mother caught her little boy by the arms just as the alligator pulled his legs. That began an unbelievable tug-of-war (拔河赛) between the two. The alligator was much stronger than the mother, but the mother did her best not to let her son go. A farmer happened to drive by, heard their screams (尖叫), rushed from his truck and helped them.
Luckily, after weeks and weeks in the hospital, the little boy survived. His legs were seriously scarred (疤痕) by the terrible attack of the animal. And on his arms, were deep scars where his mother’s finger nails (指甲) dug into his arms in her effort to pull the son she loved.
The newspaper reporter, who interviewed the boy, asked if he would show him his scars. The boy lifted the legs. And then, he said to the reporter, “Look at my arms. I have great scars on my arms, too. I have them because my mum wouldn’t let me go.”

Different weather makes people feel different. It influences health, intelligence (智力) and feelings.
In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle West, it is very hot at sometimes and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.
The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a scientific report, IQ (智商) of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse grades on exams in the hot months of the year (July and August).
Weather also has a strong influence on people’s feelings. Winter maybe a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18℃, people become stronger.
Low air pressure (气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. There is a “good weather” for health. People feel best at a temperature of about 18℃.

Do you know how to study better and make your study more effective (有效率的)? We all know that Chinese students usually study very hard for long hours. This is very good .But it doesn’t help a lot, because an efficient student must have enough sleep, enough food, enough rest and exercise. Every day you need to go out for a walk or visit some friends or some places. It’s good for your study.
When you return to your study, your mind will be refreshed and you’ll learn more and study better. Psychologists (心理学家) have found that learning takes place in this way. Here take English learning for example. First you make a lot of progress and you feel happy. Then your language study seem to stay the same, so you will think you’re learning nothing and you may give up. This can last days or even weeks.
You shouldn’t give up. At some points your language study will again take another big jump. You will see that you really have been learning all long. If you get enough sleep, food, rest and exercise, studying English can be very effective and interesting. Don’t give up along the way. Learn slowly and you’re sure to get a good result.
