Many ordinary people ranging from volunteers to media workers have dedicated (奉献) themselves to fighting the novel coronavirus. They prove that ordinary people can still do their part during difficult times.

On Feb 12, Dalian (not his real name) was taking a train to Changsha, Hunan, for a business trip. While on the train, he went into a carriage (车厢) to have lunch and chose to remain in the carriage. He did not realize that the carriage was only for people heading to Wuhan.

Several hours later, when the train arrived in Wuhan, Dalian was asked to get off, as he was in the special carriage. Although he was surprised, he didn’t want to cause trouble and got off the carriage with just a single bag.

As Wuhan had been locked down because of the epidemic (疫情), Dalian couldn’t find a hotel to stay in. Feeling at a loss, he saw a notice online looking for volunteers to work in hospitals. The payment was 500 yuan a day. Dalian decided to give it a try.

He creates fantasy worlds with witches (女巫), floating castles and flying pigs. He is Hayao Miyazaki, also known as “Japan’s Walt Disney”.

In 2016, the 75-year-old returned to make Boro the Caterpillar (《毛毛虫菠萝》), a computer-generated (CG) short movie, into a feature film.

“Miyazaki … will keep making films until he dies”, Toshio Suzuki, an experienced producer at Studio Ghibli, told Variety magazine. For Boro, Miyazaki, who has always used hand-drawn 2D animation, will work with computer technology.

The animation may be different, but Miyazaki’s movies always have something in common.

Many themes are seen again and again in his films.

Two of these themes are the sky and water. From his early film Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (《风之谷》, 1984) to his popular 2004 movie Howl’s Moving Castle (《哈尔的移动城堡》), Miyazaki’s films are full of flight. The water is another place where gravity doesn’t work. Miyazaki loves quickly filling spaces with clear water, leaving things to float.

Another repeated idea in Miyazaki’s work is the Earth’s fragility (脆弱性). He often criticizes (批评) development and pollution. Princess Mononoke (《幽灵公主》) shows villagers cutting down a forest to provide fuel for their iron factory, while natural forces fight against them.

In his movies, there is often no clear good or evil. Miyazaki has explained that he sees the 21st century as a complex time. Simple stereotypes cannot be accepted, he said, even in children’s films.

1.Hayao Miyazaki was born ________.

A.in 1940 B.in 1941 C.in 1942 D.in 1943

2.In which film did Miyazaki show his attitude?

A.Boro the Caterpillar

B.Howl’s Moving Castle

C.Princess Mononoke

D.Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

3.What does the underlined word “complex” in the last paragraph mean?

A.easy B.modern

C.standard D.difficult to understand

4.What do we know from the passage?

A.Miyazaki learnt to draw from his mother.

B.Miyazaki has given up drawing animation by hand.

C.Miyazaki is starting to focus on protecting the environment

D.Miyazaki doesn’t like using simple stereotypes in his films.

Modesty(谦逊) is a valuable quality in many cultures around the world. In China, this is no different. However, the phrase “毛遂自荐” seems to disagree with this.

During the Warring States Period, the Qin army marched(进军) on Handan. Seeing that Handan was in danger, Prince Pingyuan sought help from the state of Chu. He wanted to pick 20 talented people to go with him. However, he could only find 19 people who were good enough. Then, a man named Mao Sui volunteered.

Prince Pingyuan looked at Mao Sui with doubt, “How long have you been here with me?”

“Three years,” Mao Sui answered.

“I hear that a person with talent is like an awl(锥子) in a cloth bag. Its sharp point will soon pierce() through the bag. You’ve been here for a long time, but I haven’t seen any of your achievements. Maybe you don’t have any talent.” said Prince Pingyuan.

“What I’m asking you now is to put me into that bag. If you do that, I will pierce through it. But not only the point — the whole awl,” Mao Sui said confidently.

Impressed, Prince Pingyuan allowed Mao to join his team, and Mao proved very helpful. Now the phrase “Mao Sui recommending himself” is used to describe someone who volunteers to do a task.

However, there is a fine line between self-confidence and arrogance(傲慢). It’s important to believe in yourself, but a strong ego can harm your career and professional relationships. So we recommend letting your work speak for itself.

1.Where was Mao Sui from?

A.Qin. B.Chu. C.Handan. D.Pingyuan.

2.What does the phrase “毛遂自荐” mean?

A.Show modesty. B.Feel unconfident.

C.Be professional. D.Volunteering for a task.

3.The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 6 means ________.

A.putting an awl into a bag

B.putting Mao Sui into a bag

C.letting Mao Sui join the team

D.refusing Mao Sui

4.What can we learn from the passage?

A.Modesty isn’t a valuable quality.

B.Mao Sui was a confident person.

C.Prince Pingyuan didn’t like Mao Sui.

D.The writer thinks we should learn from Mao Sui.
