A woman in a lab coat stands in front of a group of school children. As she pours hot water into a box of liquid gas in the front of the classroom, the children cheer and clap their hands.

The woman is Kate Biberdorf. She runs a program called Fun with Chemistry which is aimed at getting children interested in science. The demonstrations(演示), such as the one she has just finished, are designed to be interesting and exciting and show children basic rules of chemistry.

Most of the demonstrations involve explosions(爆炸)” and “fire” which are wonderful to watch. One of the demonstrations is called “Elephant's Toothpaste.” Biberdorf creates some foam(泡沫) that increases very quickly in size in the classroom. There is so much foam that it seems as if the foam can be used to clean the teeth of a big animal like an elephant. In another demonstration, Biberdorf  makes a fire on her hand and sets a balloon on the fire.

There are also demonstrations designed for certain festivals. For example, Biberdorf uses pumpkins on Halloween. She pours some liquid into a pumpkin. The liquid then explodes inside the pumpkin and makes holes on it. The final product is a jacko'lantern(南瓜灯) with two “eyes” and a “mouth” made by the explosion.

Biberdorf and her program are popular among school children. She_is_happy_when_children_tell_her_how_excited_they_are_after_watching_her_performances._ She is encouraged by their words and is designing more performances. What a great teacher!

English teenagers will receive cooking lessons in schools. The idea is to encourage healthy eating to solve the problem that many people are overweight. Also, it worries people that basic cooking and food preparation skills are disappearing gradually because parents use too much preprepared fast food.

Cooking was once regarded as an important part of education in Englandeven if it was mainly for girls. In recent years cooking has become less important in schools. But the rising level of obesity(肥胖)has led to a rethink about the food that children are given and the skills they should be taught.

What we want is to teach young people how to do basic, simple meals, which they can use now at home and then in their life,” said Ed Balls, an education expert.

The new lessons will start in September, but some schools without kitchens will be given a longer time to prepare. Also, there may be a shortage of teachers with the right skills, since schools have been teaching food technology rather than practical cooking. Besides, the lessons for handson cooking will only be one hour a week for one term. But the wellknown cookery writer, Pru Leith, believes it will be worth it.

If we'd done this thirty years ago, we might not lack of knowledge about food and the trends(趋势)of obesity could be halted. Every child should know how to cook, not just for having a healthy eating habit, but because it's a life skill which is a real pleasure.”

The renewed interest in cooking is an effort to reduce the obesity rate, which is almost the highest in Europe, and according to the government, half of all British people will be obese in 25 years if we don't take measures to prevent it.
