Social media has become a part of our li...

Social media has become a part of our life. It is the communication tool that children love to bring with, but it is still illegal(违法的) for Canadian children under the age of 13 to have their social media pages.

It is a shame when you consider your learning opportunities can be offered by social media. In my school, I can see how social media provides children with the chance to learn how to communicate properly and effectively. If they want their friends to follow them or retweet(转发) their messages, they must learn to write them creatively in an interesting and amusing style, attach(粘贴) pictures, and ask questions to invite a response. Students will learn a lot from the process.

Social media can also help students to improve their writing skills. Many students usually use the blog to keep diaries about something that interests them, and gradually they will love writing.

So is it necessary to restrict(限制)students in the social media age? Not really. A survey has found that 59 percent of children have already used a social network when they are 10 years old, and 43 percent have messaged people they don't know by the age of 12.

Of course, primary schools should care about the dangers of social media. Measures should be taken to protect students from the dangers. In our school, we have a social media platform with a teacher's dashboard(信息窗) where all activities can be managed. For example, a boy wrote hurtful comments about a girl in a post message. After discussing with him, he was embarrassed and said sorry to the girl.

Over the past 23year teaching in British Columbia, I have focused on computing. I therefore take notice of the bad influence of social media on primary school students. However,_social_media_also_offers_learning_and_communicating_opportunities_to_them. More importantly, we cannot ignore the fact that primary children are using social media. I strongly believe that exposing students to the social media will make them be wiser grownups in the future.

Many people say dolphins are intelligent. They seem to be able to think, understand and learn things quickly. But are they as smart as humans, or are they more like cats and dogs? Dolphins use their brains quite differently from the way humans do. But scientists say dolphins and humans are very similar in some ways. How?

Like humans, every dolphin has its own “name”. The name is a special whistle(哨声). Each dolphin chooses a specific(特有的) whistle for itself, usually by its first birthday. Dolphins are like people in other ways, too. They “talk” to each other about a lot of things—such as their age, their feelings, and finding food. They also use a system of sounds and body language to communicate. Understanding dolphin conversation is not easy for humans. No one “speaks dolphin” yet, but some scientists are trying to learn.

Dolphins are also social animals. They live in groups called pods, and they often join others from different pods to play games and have fun—just like people. Scientists believe playing together is something only intelligent animals do.

Dolphins and humans are similar in another way: both species make plans for getting things they want. In the seas of southern Brazil, for example, dolphins use an intelligent plan to get food. When there are fish near a boat, dolphins signal(发信号) to the fishermen to put their nets in the water. Using this method, the men can catch a lot of fish. Why do dolphins help the men? There is an advantage for them: they get to eat some of the fish that escape(逃脱) from the net.
