Spiders, ants, flies and bees—these are ...

Spiders, ants, flies and bees—these are just some of the insect world. Most of us avoid them as much as possible, but it's not easy to do. You find them everywhere. Nearly 75 percent of all animals are insects.

Many people think insects are scary. Long, thin legs and big, round eyes. Millions of dollars are spent every year on experiments to destroy them. To many people, they're a nuisance—something to get rid of. They're different from us, so it's easy to see why many people fear them. However, these little animals have some amazing and special abilities, which are good for human beings.

Insects are natural recyclers. When living material dies, insects have a major role in helping to break down this material and return it to the soil. Without insects, that dead material would take a long time to decompose. Insects speed up the process, turning rubbish into useful things for the soil.

Insects contribute to our food supply too. It's hard to imagine growing enough food to feed us all in a world without insects. They help plants reproduce by moving pollen from flower to flower.

In medical labs, insects are helping us know the secrets of genetics. Many generations can be studied in a short time.

Insects truly are our friends. A world without insects would look a whole lot different. Think about that the next time you see a bee buzzing quietly over a garden.

My father was always a good gardener. One of my earliest memories is standing without shoes in the freshly tilled soil, my hands blackened from digging in the ground.

As a child, I loved following Dad around in the garden, I remember Dad pushing the tiller ahead in perfectly straight lines. Dad loved growing all sorts of things: yellow and green onions, watermelons almost as big as me, rows of yellow corns, and our favorite—red tomatoes.

As I grew into a teenager, I didn't get so excited about gardening with Dad. Instead of magical land of possibility, it had turned into some kind of prison. As Dad grew older, his love for gardening never disappeared. After all the kids grew up and had started families of our own, Dad turned to gardening like ever before. Even when he was diagnosed with cancer, he still took care of his garden.

But then, the cancer, bit by bit, invaded his body. I had to do the things he used to do. What really convinced me that Dad was leaving us was the state of his garden that year. The rows and rows of vegetables were gone. Too tired to weed them, he simply let them be. He only planted tomatoes.

For the first few years after his leave, I couldn't even bear to look at anyone's garden without having strong memories pour over me like cold water from a bucket. Three years ago, I decided to plant my own garden and started out with just a few tomatoes. That morning, after breaking up a fair amount of soil, something caught the corner of my eye and I had to smile. It was my eight-year-old son Nathan, happily playing in the freshly tilled soil.

5.What can we know from the last paragraph?
