Sort rubbish in Shanghai
It’s now required that people living in Shanghai should sort rubbish into four types: recyclable, hazardous, household food and residual.
On July 1st, 2019, Shanghai introduced a new rubbish sorting policy. People there need to put different kinds of rubbish into different bins according to the strict rules. By the end of 2020, rubbish-sorting systems will have also been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People’s Daily.
RECYCLABLE | Recyclable rubbish includes paper, books, boxes, newspapers and glass bottles. |
HAZARDOUS | Hazardous rubbish, also called harmful rubbish, includes lamps, batteries, nail polish (指 甲油) and other things with harmful chemicals.

HOUSEHOLD FOOD | Household food rubbish, also called wet rubbish, usually comes from the kitchen, such as food, vegetables, flowers, leaves and eggshells. |
RESIDUAL | Residual rubbish, also called dry waste, is anything you cannot put into the other three bins. It includes pens, toilet paper, tape, hair and towels (毛巾). |
