Sincerely yours,

Li Hua

Dear John, I’d like to thank you for your kind help in the terrible fog on my first day in London. It was your kindness that made me feel safe. August 25, which was my first day in London, is an unforgettable day for me. On stepping on the land of London, I found myself caught in a terrible fog. I was at a loss and couldn’t find the way to my school. I was so frightened that I could hear my heart beating fast. Just at that time, you spoke to me and offered help. You took my hand and led me confidently to my school. On the way, you encouraged me how and then, which helped me get rid of fear. I wouldn’t have found my school so quickly without your help. I have settled down and got used to the weather in London. Now and then I would think about you. I hope one day I can have the chance to express my thanks to you personally. 【解析】略

任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题1分,满分5分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空只填1个单词。

What will man be like in the future? We can only make a guess, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today.

In the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.

Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weak and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.

On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.

But what about hair? It will probably disappear from the body altogether in the course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, both sexes are likely to be bald(秃的).

Perhaps all these give the impression that future man will not be attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.

My six-year-old granddaughter, Caitlyn, and I stopped at a Tim Horton’s shop for a blueberry cake. As we were going out of the door, a young teenage boy was coming in.

This young man had no hair on sides of his head with a set of blue spiked(竖起的)hair on top of it. One of his nostrils(鼻孔) was pierced (扎、穿), and a ring ran through the hole and a chain went across his face and was attached to a ring he was wearing in his ear. He held a skateboard under one arm and a basketball under the other.

Caitlyn, who was walking ahead of me, stopped at once when she saw the teenager, I thought he’d scared her and she’d frozen on the spot.

 I was wrong.

My granddaughter backed up against the door and opened it as wide as it would go. Now I was face to face with the young man. I stepped aside and let him pass. His response was a polite “Thank you very much”.

On our way to the car, I praised Caitlyn for her manners in holding open the door for the young man. She didn’t seem to be troubled by his appearance, but I wanted to make sure. If a grandmother’s talk about freedom of self-expression and allowing people their differences was in order, I wanted to be ready.

As it turned out, the person who needed the talk was me.

The only thing Caitlyn noticed about the teenager was the fact that his arms were full. “He would have a hard time to open the door. ”

I saw the partially shaved head, the set of spiked hair, the piercing and the chain. She saw a person carrying something under each arm and heading toward a closed door.

In the future, I hope to get down on her level and raise my sights.

1.What did the author think of the young man?

A. Polite.    B. Uncommon.   C. Frightening. D. Funny.

2. Caitlyn helped the young man because______ .

A. she was scared         B. she didn’t notice his look

C. she wanted to avoid him  D. it would be difficult for him to open the door

3. The underlined sentence suggests that_______ .

A. the author was ashamed of herself

B. the author didn’t know how to give a talk on freedom

C. a talk on freedom was useless for the granddaughter

D. people should have more freedom to express themselves

4. The author intends to tell us that_______ .

A. we shouldn’t judge a person by his look

B. we should allow people more freedom to dress differently

C. we should be more helpful and tolerant(宽容的)to people

D. we shouldn’t be too particular about people in life

A popular saying goes, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” However, that’s not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn’t matter if the words come from someone’s else or ourselves --- the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.

We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We’re usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. In fact, we really shouldn’t be because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.

This “self-talk” helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Be aware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying “Good job!”

Often, words come out of our mouths without us thinking about the effect they will have. But we should be aware that our words cause certain responses in others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm, friendly language during the exchange. And the clear will probably respond in a similar manner. Or harsh(刻薄的)and critical language will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive.

Words possess power because of their lasting effect. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves: Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn’t pass this test, then it’s better left unsaid.

Words possess power: both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem(自尊)and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.

1.The main idea of the first paragraph is that ________.

A.words have a lasting effect on us  B.inspiring words give us confidence

C.negative words may let us down

D.not sticks and stones but words will hurt us

2.There is no sense for us to feel embarrassed when we talk to ourselves because _______.

A.almost everybody has the habit of talking to themselves

B.talking to ourselves always gives us courage

C.we can benefit from talking to ourselves

D.it does no harm to have “self-talk” when we are alone

3.The underlined part in the third paragraph means that we should also timely _______.

    A.remind ourselves                 B.praise ourselves

C.make ourselves relaxed           D.give ourselves amusement

4..The author would probably hold the view that ___________.

A.encouraging words are sure to lead to kind offers

B.negative words may stimulate us to make more progress

C.people tend to remember friendly words

D.it is better to think twice before talking to others
