                    High School In America

After middle school comes high school, which includes grades 9 through 12. Students are required to take certain subjects like English, social studies, math, science, and physical education. In addition, they choose among elective subjects (选修课程) to complete their high school education. Electives include subjects in technology, music, art, and foreign languages.

Each student in the school has their own locker for books and personal items. This convenience saves students from carrying textbooks, and allows students a small space they can decorate with posters and favorite objects.

Cheating in any form is strictly prohibited in American schools. And in fact, high school students usually don’t cheat. A student caught cheating or copying from another student faces severe punishment.

Each school holds certain yearly activities, such as homecoming (返校节), prom night (舞会), holiday celebrations, etc.

Many high school students have part-time jobs by the age of 15 or 16, some even earlier. Their first jobs are often babysitting or cutting laws, but later they will likely get a job at a fast-food restaurant, video store, or clothing shop.

PART FOUR WRITING (36)

SECTION A

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer {zxxk007}.(5)

People talk about the problems with diet and dieting, and use them as excuses for ending, or for not beginning a weight-loss plan. The main problems are that most people don’t know how the body works or they are unwilling to change their lifestyles. When correctly solved, these problems will disappear and will finally be a regular part of your lifestyle.

One problem with diet and dieting is that people complain of feeling hungry. In fact, slimming doesn’t mean eating less. It just means eating differently. You should eat more foods rich in fiber(纤维) instead of foods high in fat. It is possible to be slim without ever feeling hungry. Eating more nutrient-rich (营养丰富的) foods also means you feel less hungry because your body is getting what it needs.

Another difficulty is the desire (欲望). Most people complain that they cannot eat their favorite foods based on weight-loss plans, which causes them to eat too much “ bad” foods. A slimming plan shouldn’t mean you can just eat “ bad” foods. While there are some foods that you should limit, there is no harm in treating yourself in small amounts now and then. Eating one chocolate bar once in a while is not going to end a healthy eating plan.

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modern countries it has for some time been fashioned to think that by free education for all --- one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns…

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

45. The writer of the passage thinks that __________.

A. education can settle most of the world’s problems

B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world.

A. our society needs all kinds of jobs

C. a farmer is more important than a professor

D. work with hands is the most important

47. The purpose of education is __________.

A. to choose officials for the country

B. to prepare children mainly for their future work

C. to let everyone receive education fit for him

D. to build a perfect world

48. The passage tells us about ________ of the education.
