The student answered, “ I will be all right. I have prepared a hundred high hats, one for each official I will meet. I am sure I will succeed.” The teacher got angry on hearing this. “What?” he cried. “Is this what ten years of my teaching has made of you? Nothing but flatterer(拍马屁的人)?” “Excuse me, honored(尊敬的) master,” the student rose to his feet and apologized hurriedly. “But you have always been absorbed in your studies and don’t know how vulgar(庸俗的) the world has come to be. I’m a real book lover. Every time my friends visit me, my nose is buried in a book. Wherever I go, I always have a book with me. Novels, history books, stories about people, journals and news—I read them all and I’ve learnt a lot, too. For example, many things in life happen for the best even if we don’t like or understand them.
Why is reading such an enjoyable pastime for me? I probably first learned about it from my parents. My mother read to me at night in my childhood and bought me picture books. The greatest gift she has given me is a love for reading. And it will be a life-long habit.
No one ever asked me why I liked to read. They just saw me and asked, “Oh? Is that for school work?” And I just shook my head, “No. It’s just for fun.” While reading a good book, I can totally forget myself and fly to another world. It’s like exploring through someone’s eyes, which is just as exciting as watching a movie.
Reading is also necessary in order to learn about writing, to improve my use of words and phrases and broaden my knowledge. What a pity to see our imagination disappear, for we don’t exercise it often. Reading can even be good for one’s health, I think. Everyone should read sad stories that make us cry and also books with humor that make us laugh out loud!

A. make his parents happy
B. finish his school work

A. it is bad for our healthB. we will soon learn how to write
C. it will help us to have a good restD. it will soon disappear
4.. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Why do I have few friends?B. What are my life habits?
C. Why do I love reading?D. Why do things happen for the best?

Dear Grandpa,
How are you those days? I have been missing you very much after I went to college a year ago. Whenever I think of the old days, I feel very happily. I still remember when I was child; you always held me in your arms and told me stories till I fall asleep. We often went to the fields to enjoy the pleasant view there. You told me the name of different plants and their characteristics. Gradually, I became interesting in biology and chose to learn biology when I entered into the college. Now my friend Ann, together with me, are going to do field study and the findings will be use as materials for our research. Since we’ll do the study in our hometown, I hope to see you by then.
Yours
Daisy
Finding a new and fun hobby can make you a happier person. Hobbies can be a great way to relieve stress and bring more joy into your life. Specifically when you find a new hobby. Hobbies are for everyone at any age. When you get older, you should not have fewer hobbies. 1. . You might be looking for a new hobby, but you're not sure what. A new hobby requires finding new interests, which means experimenting to find those interests.
Try new things. To find a new hobby, it will require trying new things. New hobbies won't usually just find you. Don't put things off. You might think to yourself, "I don't like that." If you've never done it, or given it a chance, how can you know? 2. .
Learn new things. You're never too young or old to learn more in life. If you take the time to learn new things, you'll develop new interests. Let your curiosity run wild, and develop more knowledge over the things you don't know or are familiar with. 3. . Reading the same sports newspaper everyday doesn't count as a new and fun hobby.
Collect things. 4.. Start collecting them. Maybe you have an interest in coins, or specific jewelry. Think about certain interests that pertain to what you can collect. If you're a sports fan, then collect sport cards, or jersey's. Simple hobbies aren't always a bad thing. You can collect just about anything.
5. . Everyone has a creative side. Some people find different ways of expressing that side to them. It can be writing, drawing, painting, playing a music instrument, photography, dancing, or singing. These can be fun and relaxing hobbies to have that be a positive way of expressing your emotions.
A Interact with others
B Think of the things that you do like
C Learning is not such a bad thing
D Find and express the creative side in you
E Have an open mind and give things a chance
F Otherwise you'll develop more stress and gray hairs

No one wants to be tested. We would all like to get a driver’s license without answering questions about rights of way or showing that we can parallel park a car. Many future lawyers and doctors probably wish they could join their profession without taking an exam.
But tests and standards are a necessary fact of life. They protect us from unskilled drivers, harmful products and dishonest professionals. In schools too exams play a. constructive role. They tell public officials whether new school programs are making a difference and where new investments are likely to pay off.
They tell teachers what their students have learned--and have not. They tell parents how their children are doing compared with others their age. They encourage students to make more effort.
It is important to recall that for most of century, educators used intelligence tests to decide which children should get a high-quality education. The point of IQ testing was to find out how much children were capable of learning rather than to test what they had actually learned. Based on IQ scores, millions of children
were assigned to dumbed-down programs instead of solid courses in science, math, history, literature and foreign language.
This history reminds us that tests should be used to improve education. Every child should have access to a high-quality education. Students should have full opportunity to learn what will be tested; otherwise their scores will merely reflect whether they come from an educated family.
In the past few years, we have seen the enormous benefits that flow to disadvantaged students because of the information provided by state tests. Those who fall behind are now getting extra instruction in after-school classes and summer programs. In their efforts to improve student performance, states are
increasing teachers salaries, testing new teachers and insisting on better teacher education.
Performance in education means the mastery of both knowledge and skills. This is why it is reasonable to test teachers to make sure they know their subject matter, as well as how to teach it to young children. And this is why it is reasonable to assess whether students are ready to advance to the next grade or graduate
from high school.
