When I returned from a trip abroad, I felt that something was wrong between Keith (one of our twin sons) and me. So I asked him, “Keith, have I done anything that really      your feelings?”

Instantly, he said, “Yes. Last Christmas you promised me a special    that I really wanted and you       gave it to me.”

The      is that I’d completely forgotten about it. I       , “Is there anything else I’ve done wrong, but I have never asked for your forgiveness?”

Again, his      was immediate, “Remember when Mom said you had to go to the       because Stephen was going to be born? You left us at home and       hurriedly. Remember?” I did.

“Well, you left in a hurry and      the suitcase with all the things.” I couldn’t believe all the       he remembered! “After you left Mom at the hospital, you came back and you were       . When you got here, the suitcase had been opened and       was thrown all over the place. And you    me.”

“And you didn’t do it?” I asked.

“No.”

My heart       . I felt terrible. I hugged Keith and asked him to       me. His honesty made me think of our other twin son, Kevin. Perhaps I’d hurt him, too. I went to ask him the      question. Kevin’s answer was as immediate as his      had been, “Last Christmas you       us a special toy and you never bought it for us.”

the Christmas was past, I still took my two sons to the store that day and bought them what I had promised. The       thing wasn’t the toy. The problem was I’d made a promise all too lightly and didn’t keep it as their father.

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌)a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.

Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺).Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱)than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.

Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number.

You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher(洗碗机)only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.

1.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?

A. Using river water.

B. Paving parking lots.

C. Throwing batteries away.

D. Throwing rubbish into lakes.

2.What can be inferred from the text?

A. All water shortages are due to human behavior.

B. The average family in America makes proper use of water.

C. There is much we can do to reduce family size.

D. It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.

3.The last paragraph is intended to      .

A. show us how to fix leaks at home

B. tell us how to run a dishwasher

C. suggest what we do to save water at home

D. prove what drinking glass is best for us.

4.The text is mainly about    .

A. how human activity affects our water supply

B. how much we depend on water to live

C. why droughts occur more in dry climates

D. why paving roads reduces our water.

Sitting on the peaceful coast of Galapagos Islands. Ecuador, watching the sun move quietly into the sea, you shouldn't forget that Charles Darwin (1809-1882) arrived here in 1835. He stayed on the islands for five weeks, observing various animals. This finally inspired his famous work, On the Origin of Species. You can certainly follow Darwin's footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands. The islands are certainly a paradise (天堂) for wildlife, as there are no natural killers on the islands and the number of boats and visitors is under government control. Though you cannot walk freely as Darwin did about 200 years ago, each day is as impressive as it could be. The most well-known animal of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise(巨型海龟), which can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Sanra Cruz, the second largest island in the archipelago(群岛). Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been seen in their youth by Darwin himself. Despite strict control over activities and timing, your stay on the Galapagos will be remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures diving with sea lions that swim and play within inches of you; feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim; and, most magically, seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air.

Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin, you will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world. At night you will sleep on board the ship, leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands, which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time.

1.What do we know about Darwin's visit to the islands?

A. He completed his famous book on the islands

B. He studied different creatures on the islands

C. He was touched by the geography of the islands

D. He was attracted by well-known animals of the islands

2.Which of the following plays a role in making the islands "a paradise for wildlife"?

A. Animals on the islands feed on grass.

B. Local government forbids killing wildlife.

C. Tourists are not allowed to touch the animals.

D. People cannot visit the islands as they wish.

3.Your stay on the islands will be most impressive mainly because of_________.

A. a closer view of animals

B. Darwin's inspiring trip

C. The beautiful sea views

D. various daring activities

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Unique Attraction for Wildlife Lovers

B. Calapagos as a Paradise for Adventures

C. Charles Darwin as a Symbol of Galapagos

D. A Successful Example of Wildlife Protection

About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to me. I never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always yelling at them.

We often met. I always spoke, but the only answer I ever got was a hello from a four-year-old girl. One day when I returned, they were just coming back to their apartment and the little girl was holding the door in the hall open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things. The parents were telling her to hurry. I looked up and saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me. I hurried as much as I could and thanked her. She was smiling from ear to ear.

That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and saw a white teddy bear. I thought of the little girl and said to myself, “I bet she would like it.” So I bought it for her.

The next day there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was so proud of her bear and thanked me. Then I noticed her mother and the other children were there in the hall, too.

Now when we meet in the hall, we all speak in a friendly manner. Last night we had about four inches of snow. The temperature was below zero. When I opened the outside door, there was my car with all the snow removed. The man next door was the only person I knew in the whole building, so when I saw him the next day, I asked him if he was the nice person that removed the snow. He said NO. He wanted to, but his wife said she wanted to do it.

Isn’t it amazing that the small kind act of a four-year-old girl can change so many things for the better?

1.Why did the author do unnecessary things in his car?

A. His neighbor yelled at him.

B. He did not know how to kill time.

C. The weather was cold outside.

D. He did not wanted to be embarrassed.

2.The underline word “yelling” in the passage probably means _____________.

A. knocking           B. shouting

C. beating              D. laughing

3.What the four-year-old girl did made the author feel _____________.

A. warm                  B. sad

C. upset                 D. angry

4.The passage mainly tells us__________.?

A. Children should be polite to their neighbors.

B. People should be kind and communicate with each other.

C. Your neighbors are not as bad as you think.

D. Things can be changed by removing snow.
