All scientists subscribe to the view that the increase in the earth’s temperature is   1. to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil to   2.  (production) energy. Some byproducts of this process are called “greenhouse” gases, the most important one of   3.  is carbon dioxide. Dr Janice Foster explains: “There is a natural phenomenon that scientists call the ‘greenhouse   4.  (effective). This is   5.  small amounts of gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour trap heat from the sun and   6.  warm the earth.   7.  the ‘greenhouse effect’, the earth would be about thirty-three degrees Celsius 8.  (cool) than it is. So, we need those gases. The problem begins when we add huge quantities of extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It means that more heat energy tends   9.  (trap) in the atmosphere   10.  (cause) the global temperature to to up.”

1.due/owing 2.produce 3.which 4.effect 5.when 6.therefore 7.Without 8.cooler 9.to be trapped 10.causing 【解析】 试题分析:本文讲的是地球的变暖会给人类带来什么影响。 1.due/owing 固定搭配:due to/owing to由于---,故填due/owing。 be+to do sth. 故填therefore(因此)。 Do you know the lady with whom our manager is talking in the office?Where is the supermarket in which you bought the laptop last week? Yesterday we visited the West Lake for which Hangzhou is famous. The old woman with whom you talked just now is a famous artist. The naughty boy made a hole in the wall through which he could see what is happening outside. I have about 20 books, half of which were written by Bing Xin, the famous writer.

When NASA astronaut Scott Kelly completes his yearlong mission on the International Space Station next year, he’ll come back just a little bit younger than his twin, Mark, than he was before. This is because time travels more slowly in space, a phenomenon first described by Albert Einstein’s 1915 theory of general relativity.

This December, universities and academies around the world are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the theory’s publication.

Even 60 years after his death, Einstein is still the most important scientist of the modern era. Looking back as far as 2,400 years ago, only Newton, Galileo and Aristotle were his equals.

Born in the era of horse-drawn carriages, his ideas started a technological revolution that brought about more change in one century than in the 2,000 years before.

In 1905, Einstein published four important scientific papers. These completely changed people’s ideas about space, time, light and matter. In one of these papers Einstein. introduced his theory of special relativity. Two groundbreaking parts of the theory were about the relationship between mass and energy and the speed of light. Einstein was able to show that mass and energy were connected through the formula E=MC2. The theory also says that no object can travel faster than the speed of light.

About 10 years later came his theory of general relativity, the theory that modern physics is really based on. In Einstein’s mathematics, space has three dimensions, and the fourth dimension is time. Space and time are part of one continuum, called space-time. The presence of mass changes space-time, which explains where gravity comes from.

Computers, satellites, telecommunication, lasers, television and nuclear power, many of the biggest developments in the modern world, can be linked to Einstein’s work.

“We are a different people than we were a century ago,” said astrophysicist Michael Shara of the American Museum of Natural. History, “completely different, because of Einstein.”

However, there’s more to him beyond the image of a science mastermind. Einstein, as a person, has also become a grandfatherly icon in our culture.

He liked playing Mozart on his Violin and keeping fit by hiking and walking. Power was not his goal. In 1952, the young nation of Israel asked Einstein to be its president, but he refused.

And, yes, he was eccentric. With hair like that, how could he not be?

1.The first paragraph was written to         .

A. get readers to wonder about the effects of space travel on astronauts’ health

B. interest readers in the relationship between time and space

C. describe what gave Einstein the inspiration for his theories

D. lead in to the topic of the theory of general relativity

2.From the article, it can be concluded that         .

A. the theory of general relativity is mainly about space and time

B. the theory of general relativity proves that the speed of light is the fastest of all speeds

C. the theory of general relativity is about math and has nothing to do with physics

D. the most important parts of the theory of special relativity are about space and energy

3.By using Michael Shara’s words, the author intends to         .

A. give high praise to Einstein’s important publications

B. stress the great contribution that Einstein made to the modern world

C. suggest that more research needs to be done into Einstein and his work

D. say that there was more to Einstein than just being a science genius

Have you ever imagined what human beings will look like in the future? Well, now you don’t have to.

According to AsapScience, a Canada-based video channel that touches on many different science topics, humans will be very different creatures 1,000 years from now.

Artificial intelligence, genetic engineering and climate change will work together to change our bodies greatly, according to a video recently published by the channel.

We could, for instance, develop red eyes as our DNA changes, and have darker skin because of global warming.

The video painted a picture of a future world in which our bodies are part human, part machine. Nanobots, or tiny robots, will be put into our bodies, improving our abilities.

“No longer will we be limited by our own physiology. We will truly become a mixture of biology and machine on the inside,” says the video.

Meanwhile, designer babies will cause future generations to grow into intelligent, attractive people. As global warming takes hold, humans will also be skinnier and taller, as this body shape deals with heat better.

In fact, Cadell Last, a researcher at the Global Brain Institute located in Belgium, believes change may happen even faster than this.

As he said in a paper recently published in Current Aging Science, mankind is already going through a major evolutionary change. In less than four decades, Last claims, we will live longer, have children in old age and need artificial intelligence to finish daily tasks.

“Your 80 or 100 is going to be so radically different than your grandparents,” Last said. Instead of living fast and dying young, he believes humans will live slow and die old.

“The biological clock isn’t going to be around forever,” he added, and said that people could pause it for some time using future technology.

Just a few hundred years ago, most humans were working in the fields, while nowadays more and more are getting an education. These are just predictions, and no one can be sure how human beings will evolve in the future. But with such large changes in our environments, it seems likely that we will all look very different one day.

1.Which of the following factors could play a role in the appearance of future humans, according to the text?

A. Advanced technology and global warming.

B. Medicine that fights aging and genetic engineering.

C. The Internet and artificial intelligence.

D. The cold weather and the dangers of machines.

2.The video released by AsapScience said that         .

A. humans will be thinner and shorter

B. future humans’ bodies will be part machine

C. humans will develop red eyes that will enable them to see clearly at night

D. tiny robots will be put in humans’ minds and will give them super abilities

3.Which of the following would Cadell Last probably agree with?

A. Future babies will be designed according to their grandparents’ wishes.

B. Our increasing dependence on artificial intelligence will threaten our survival one day.

C. Future technology will pause our biological clocks so that humans live slower and longer.

D. In less than four decades, humans will have a sudden genetic change that will make us rely on artificial intelligence.

4.The main purpose of the article is to         .

A. tell us about a prediction of how humans will look in the future

B. offer us different theories on how humans will evolve in the future

C. encourage us to be imaginative about how humans will look in the future

D. inform us what kinds of factors Could influence how humans will look in the future

When you buy cooking oil in the supermarket, you may notice that some brands are labeled as “GM (genetically modified)-free”. So, what is genetic modification? Are GM foods safe?

These questions have been put back into the spotlight recently. On Nov 19, the Food and Drug Administrati0n (FDA) in the US announced that it had approved the AquAdvantage salmon to go on the market, making it the first genetically modified animal to be approved as food anywhere in the world.

GM foods are plants or animals that have been given a gene from another plant or animal to make them stronger in some way. The AquAdvantage salmon contains a gene from another type of salmon that makes it grow faster.

Although the FDA has said “food from the fish is safe to eat”, some believe that scientists can’t completely understand the potential health risks of GM foods, simply because they’re so new. Others worry that the fish could escape into the wild and cause ecological problems.

GM crops have experienced the same controversy, even though GM technology cuts down on the use of pesticides on crops and increases yields.

While GM animals are new, GM crops have already appeared on our plates: A total of 28 countries in the world including the US, Brazil and India planted 181.5 million hectares (1.815 million km2) of GM crops in 2014, according to the International Service for tile Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications. In China, we grow GM cotton and papaya and import GM soybeans, corn, rape, cotton and beets from abroad.

Due to safety worries, many countries have regulations for producing and selling GM food.

In European Union countries, each GM food must be approved before it can be used. This process can take up to 17 months. The origin of all GM foods must also be traceable, and all food with a GM content of more than 0.9 percent must also be labeled, according to EU website europa.eu.

The US is less strict about GM foods. According to FDA regulations, companies introducing new GM foods to the market should report them at least 120 days before release. The labeling is voluntary, except that a product cannot be labeled as “GM-free” if genetically modified materials are used.

In China, GM foods can only be produced after strict tests by the Ministry of Agriculture say that they are safe. All food that is made from GM crops or contains GM ingredients must be clearly labeled on the wrapper.

1.According to the text, the AquAdvantage salmon         .

A. tastes better than normal salmon

B. is a product that mixes several types of fish

C. has a gene from a different type of salmon

D. remains to be approved in several countries

2.One of the reasons for many people to worry about the AquAdvantage salmon is that         .

A. the gene that makes them grow faster can work on humans too

B. there are possible health risks that even scientists might not have figured out yet

C. they could possibly become threats to other wild species

D. they are not nutritious enough or might taste strange

3.From-the text, it can be concluded that GM crops         .

A. no longer cause any controversy

B. have already been planted in some countries

C. are popular because they don’t need pesticides

D. can increase yields, making them welcome in countries like Japan

4.Which of the following is TRUE about regulations for producing and selling GM food?

A. All food with GM content must be labeled in European countries.

B. In the US, the AquAdvantage salmon will have to be labeled as GM food.

C. In France or Germany, every GM food that is about to go on the market must be reported at least 120 days before release.

D. In China, all food that is made from GM crops or contains GM ingredients must be clearly labeled on the package.
