A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some extremely expensive telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The fact is that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously(有意识地) went for the best cups...And then you began eyeing each other's cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not change the quality of life we live.Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."God makes the coffee, not the cups.Enjoy your coffee!"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything."

Live simply.Love generously.Care deeply.Speak kindly.Leave the rest to God.

1.What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.the nice-looking cup .

B.the ordinary-looking cup .

C.the coffee of good quality .

D.the coffee of poor quality.

2.Why did the professor offer his students coffee with varieties of cups?

A.To give his students many more choices.

B.To teach his students how to enjoy coffee.

C To tell his students the right attitude to life

D.To show the students his collection of cups.

3.According to the professor, the happiest people are the ones who _____.

A.get the best type of coffee cups

B.care about social status and wealth

C.have a wide range of coffee cups

D.make the best of what they have

1.A 2.C 3.D 【解析】 试题分析:文章通过杯子和咖啡告诉大家要追求生活的本质,不要被外表所迷惑。 1.A猜测词义题。根据上文Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee,可知杯子不能增加咖啡的质量,但是这个杯子很昂贵,甚至在某种情况下能掩盖我们所喝的东西。故选A。 2.C主推理题。通读全文可知文章就是通过这样的事告诉他的学生要追求生活的本质,不要被外表所迷惑。故选C。 3.细节题。根据倒数第二段"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything." Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee,可知杯子不能增加咖啡的质量,但是这个杯子很昂贵,甚至在某种情况下能掩盖我们所喝的东西。故选A。 考点:考查人生哲理类阅读

Shree Bose is one of the most impressive kids graduating from Fort Worth Country Day High School this year. Bose has a large circle of friends, and there’s one who you may have heard of: President Obama. He has twice publicly recognized her achievements in cancer research and spoken with her in the Oval Office.

If that isn’t enough, Bose recently gave a TED Talk about her work with the cancer drug Cisplatin, which also won her first prize at the Google Science Fair and recognition as one of Glamour magazine’s Young Amazing Women of the Year.

After watching her grandfather struggle with liver cancer, Bose was determined to help out in any way she could. As a high school student though, her

scientific choices were limited. She reached out to various hospitals and research centers, but doctors turned down her requests because they felt she was too inexperienced medically.

Only the North Texas Science Health Center respected her determination and chose to guide her. The results were amazing.

Bose chose to study a protein (蛋白质) and its reaction with the cancer drug Cisplatin. She noticed that when she prevented this protein from growing, Cisplatin was allowed to begin destroying cancer cells once again.

“My project not only contributes to the understanding of the relationship between the protein and Cisplatin, but also suggests a newer, more effective treatment for patients who resist Cisplatin,” Bose said.

Bose’s achievements aren’t limited to the lab, though. She was also captain of her swim team and editor-in-chief of her school paper.

Bose is currently getting practical experience at the National Institute of Health and she’ll be attending Harvard in the fall. She plans to study molecular biology and go to medical school. Eventually, she would like to be a doctor.

When I was nine years old, I loved to go fishing with my dad. But the only thing that wasn’t very fun about it was that he could catch many fish while I couldn’t catch anything. I usually got pretty upset and kept asking him why. He always answered, “Son, if you want to catch a fish, you have to think like a fish.” I remember being even more upset then because, “I’m not a fish!” I didn’t know how to think like a fish. Besides, I reasoned, how could what I think influence what a fish does?

As I got a little older I began to understand what my dad really meant. So, I read some books on fish. And I even joined the local fishing club and started attending the monthly meetings. I learned that a fish is a cold-blooded animal and therefore is very sensitive to water temperature. That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. Besides, water is usually warmer in direct sunlight than in the shade. Yet, fish don’t have any eyelids(眼皮) and the sun hurts their eyes… The more I understood fish, the more I became effective at finding and catching them.

When I grew up and entered the business world, I remember hearing my first boss say, “We all need to think like salespeople.” But it didn’t completely make sense. My dad never once said, “If you want to catch a fish you need to think like a fisherman.” What he said was, “You need to think like a fish.” Years later, with great efforts to promote long-term services to people much older and richer than me, I gradually learned what we all need is to think more like customers. It is not an easy job. I will show you how in the following chapters.

1.Why was the author upset in fishing trips when he was nine?

A. He could not influence a fish as his father did.

B. His father was not patient with him.

C. His father did not teach him fishing.

D. He could not catch a fish.

2.According to the author, fish are most likely to be found _________.

A. in shallow water under waterside trees

B. in deep water on cloudy days

C. in shallow water under sunlight

D. in deep water on sunny days

3.After entering the business world, the author found _________.

A. it easy to think like a customer

B. his first boss’s sales ideas reasonable

C. his father’s fishing advice inspiring

D. it difficult to sell services to poor people

4.This passage most likely comes from _________.

A. a fishing guide          B. a millionaire’s biography

C. a novel on childhood     D. a popular sales book

Everyone has a dream. We are on the way to achieve it whether the way is smooth or tough. As Senior 3 student, I have the same dream as my classmates that I can be admitted to an ideal university. In the past three year, I have done everything I can to equip myself with that I have learnt from my teachers. Not only had I enjoyed the pleasure of study but also I have got closer to my dream. Anxiety and pressure did discourage from me at times and with the encouragement of my teachers and classmates, I think I’ll make it.

I’m sure that there has still a long way to go to achieve my dream. No matter what challenging it is, I will make it come true. As the proverb said, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
