The Attack on September 11th New York: W...

The Attack on September 11th

New York: When the first jet struck Tower 1 at World Trade Center at 8: 48 am on Tuesday, the people in Tower 2 at World Trade Center with a view of the instant damage across the divide had the clearest sense of what they too must do : get out fast.

Katherine Ilachinski, who had been knocked off her chair by the blast of heat exploding from the neighboring tower, was one of those. Despite her 70 years of age, Ms Ilachinski, an architect working on the 91st floor of Tower 2 at World Trade Center, the south tower, went for the stairs. Twelve floors above her, Judy Wein, a manager, screamed and set off too.

But others up and down the 110 floors, many without clear views of the damage across the way and thus unclear about what was happening, were not so sure. And the 18 minutes before the next plane would hit were ticking off.

Among the uncertainty about what was the best thing to do, formal announcements inside the south tower instructed people to stay put, assuring them that the building was sound and the threat was limited to the other tower.

Some left, others stayed, some began to climb down and, when met with more announcements and other warning to stop or return, went back up. The decisions made in those instants proved to be of great importance, because many who chose to stay, were doomed (注定) when the second jet crashed into the south tower killing many and stranding (使…某物留在) many more in the floors above where the jet hit.

One of those caught in indecision(犹豫不决) was the manager at Fuji Bank USA. Richard Jacobs of Fuji Bank left the 79th floor with the other office workers, but on the 48th floor they heard the announcement that the situation was under control. Several got in the lifts and went back up two minutes or so before the plane crashed into their floor.

When the first jet struck World Trade Center at 8:48 a.m. on Tuesday…及And the 18 minutes before the next plane would hit were ticking off.…when the second jet crashed into the south tower… 根据…formal announcements inside the sound tower instructed people to stay put, assuring them that the building was sound and the threat was limited to the other tower 及其后的伴随状语所表达的意思 “向他们保证说这幢建筑物安然无恙并且威胁局限在另一塔”可知是要人们 “留下来”,据此选 A。 3. Richard Jacobs with the other office workers开始开了79 层,但在 48 层时听说形势已得到控制,有几个人便又返回到79 层,大约 2 分钟之后他们的楼层被撞,据此选 D。 It will be very hard but also very brittle—that is, it will break easily. 例如:The “Chunnel”, a tunnel(隧道) connecting England and France, is now complete.此句中a tunnel connecting England and France是Chunnel的同位语。 例如:“Our parties are aimed for children 2 to 10,” Anaclerio said, “and they’re very interactive and creative in that they built a sense of drama based on a subject.” A child’s birthday party doesn’t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun. 比如文章第22小题根据…formal announcements inside the sound tower instructed people to stay put, assuring them that the building was sound and the threat was limited to the other tower 及其后的伴随状语所表达的意思 “向他们保证说这幢建筑物安然无恙并且威胁局限在另一塔”可知是要人们 “留下来”不是逃走,据此选 A。

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely(绝对地) terrifying.

1.    . However, most deaths result from fear, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.

Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off th e road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel(方向盘) in the "ten and two" position.

Undo your seatbelt.    2.    . Release the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.

3.     . Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the  window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape choice either because of fear or misinformation about doors and sinking.

Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.   4.    .

Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the stage where the car has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival.     5.   . While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.

A. Open the window as soon as you hit the water.

B. This is the first thing to do, yet it often gets forgotten.

C. Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.

D. In short, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.

E. It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to be filled with water usually.

F. Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning(淹死).

G. But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
