Owls(猫头鹰) are mysterious creatures. We often think of them as scary. They sometimes live in abandoned houses. They fly without a sound through backyards at night. In stories, they appear with ghosts. When we hear an owl's familiar “whooo...whooo...”,it can make us feel very frightened. Owls fly silently, without even a whisper of wings moving through the air. It's as though they appear out of nowhere—like ghosts on wings. Owls fly and hunt on the darkest of nights. An owl's night habits make it unique. Do these creatures of the night possess strange powers?

Owls possess unusual powers of sight and hearing, but they are not supernatural powers. They are natural adaptations that let them live most efficiently(高效地) at night. There is no reason to fear owls. Their habits make them helpful to humans. By hunting mice and other rodents(啮齿目动物),owls help to keep a natural balance between plant and animal life. Without owls, there would be a large number of rodents in farmers' fields and storage barns.

More than 100 species of owls occupy a variety of habitats around the world. A few oceanic islands and the Antarctic have no owls. The world's owls come in large, medium, small, smaller, and smallest. For example, the Eurasian eagle owl—one of the largest—has a body that is two to three feet long, with a wingspan(翼展) of up to five and onehalf feet. The North American elf owl (the world's smallest owl) is five to six inches long and has a wingspan that measures slightly more than one foot.

Most male and female owls of the same species look alike, although females are usually larger. In some species, the female's colors are like those of the trees or grass where she makes her nest.

Baby owls, called chicks, stay with their parents until they are about three months old. They soon find their own hunting areas, where they may stay for the rest of their lives. Some owls can live 20 years or more.

1.Most people regard owls as________.

A.clever   B.hardworking C.terrifying  D.shy

2.Owls help humans in that they________.

3.What is special about owls?

Have you ever played the video dance game? Now such games are used to help lose weight!

Like many other teenage boys, Jones loved sports. But at 5 feet, 175 pounds, he found his weight a trouble. His doctor wanted him to lose 50 pounds so that he may catch up with the football game by the end of summer.

Jones chose the popular dance revolution video game at home to increase his activity. He had lost about 10 pounds by changing his diet. Now, after two weeks playing the game, he has lost another 10!

The health study is being done by an insurance company, which hopes that game will lead to better health and lower costs. “Obesity claims(肥胖索赔) last year cost us $77 million. We have to cut those costs”, said a member of the insurance group. The company provides a game console(游戏主机), a dance mat and software for the six-month, $ 60,000 study.

In West Virginia, 43% of the nearly 6,000 children examined for heart disease risk were considered over-weighted; more than 25% were too fat. “We are in a crisis of childhood obesity not only in West Virginia but in America,” said a researcher.

Researchers are looking at the potential for improving effects by using the game. A teacher in West Virginia has been using the video game in her classes since last fall. She reported that the game does improve heart health as well as eye-hand coordination, and her students take the video game as a great alternative to jumping rope or ball games.

A child who has once been pleased with a tale likes, as a rule, to have it retold in almost the same words, but this should not lead parents to treat printed fairy stories as formal texts. It is always much better to tell a story than read it out of a book, and, if a parent can produce what, in the actual situation of the time and the child, is an improvement on the printed text, so much the better.

A charge made against fairy tales is that they harm the child by frightening him or making him sad thinking. To prove the latter, one would have to show in a controlled experiment that children who have read fairy stories were more often sorry for cruelty than those who had not. As to fears, there are, I think, some cases of children being dangerously terrified by some fairy story. Often, however, this arises from the child having heard the story once. Familiarity with the story by repetition turns the pain of fear into the pleasure of a fear faced and mastered.

There are also people who object to fairy stories on the grounds that they are not objectively true, that giants, witches, two - headed dragons, magic carpets, etc. do not exist; and that, instead of being fond of the strange side in fairy tales, the child should be taught to learn the reality by studying history. I find such people, I must say so peculiar (奇怪的, 异常的) that I do not know how to argue with them. If their cases were sound, the world should be full of mad men attempting to fly from New York to Philadelphia on a stick or covering a telephone with kisses in the belief that it was their beloved girl -friend.

No fairy story ever declared to be a description of the real world and no clever child has ever believed that it was.

1.The author considers that a fairy story is more effective when it is    .

A.repeated without any change

B.treated as a joke

C.set in the present

D.made some changes by the parent

2.The advantage claimed for repeating fairy stories to young children is that it   .

A.develops their power of memory

B.makes them less fearful

C.makes them believe there is nothing to be afraid of

D.encourages them not to have strange beliefs

3.The author's mention of sticks and telephones is meant to suggest that    .

A.fairy stories are still being made up

B.there is some misunderstanding about fairy tales

C.people try to modernize old fairy stories

D.there is more concern for children's fears nowadays

4.One of the reasons why some people are not in favor of fairy tales is that    .

A.they are full of imagination

B.they make teachers of history difficult to teach

C.they are not interesting

D.they just make up the stories which are far from the truth

In the tenth grade,I began working for free at a vet’s that was run by a friend. I wanted to get experience for what I thought would be my future job. However,on one particular Saturday morning I learnt something perhaps more important.

The hospital was in the middle of one of the poorer sections of the city and some people could only pay for the most basic treatments. On this Saturday,a man and his young son,who was probably about 7 years old, walked in with a small cat in a cardboard box. There was something wrong with the cat’s left eye. But the man could not afford to pay for the cost of the medicine. He kept quiet for a while, and then he asked where the nearest animal shelter was. Hearing this, his son cried and started to argue with him. All of a sudden,an older woman who was sitting in the waiting room stood up,walked up to the counter, and told the man that she would pay for the cost. The man thanked her and the son got to keep a healthy cat.

I always thought it was the right thing to help out a needy person, but I only saw people do acts of kindness on TV or in movies. What the woman did made me believe that these things do happen in real life, and quite often.

Now,when I can’t decide whether to help someone who is in need,I remember this woman, and then I have the courage to step up to the plate. Sometimes other people follow.

1.We can infer that a vet’s is most probably a hospital for    .

A.kids   B.the poor   C.animals   D.women

2.For what purpose did the writer work at the vet’s?

A.To help out his friend

B.To make some pocket money

C.To gain some work experience

D.To learn more about society

3.What would the man probably do with the cat if the woman didn’t help him?

A.Take it home without treatment.

B.Give it to someone on the street.

C.Give it to the woman.

D.Give it up.

4.We can learn from this passage that    .

A.the man doesn’t like keeping a cat

B.the older woman often helps people out

C.the man’s son didn’t agree to the man’s first decision

D.the hospital often asks for too much money
