Trust has been considered as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe.     1.   . Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?

_2._. With whom will you share things that you don't want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself. While a few of your friends may be fiercely protective of their privacy and may not tell their secrets to anyone, those who do, surely find you trustworthy and reliable.

Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends.    3.      . This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable. The friends who trust you will never forget to include you in the important decisions of their life.

Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship.   4.    . While some people find it difficult to forgive and forget, your friends will never have problems moving on. It is because they trust you and believe that you will never cause any pain to them on purpose.

There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier.     5.      . Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement. You can determine that they trust you and believe in your beliefs, if they side with you when you need them the most.

A.People can be extraordinarily jealous sometimes

B.You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion

C.In fact, winning trust is, by far, the most challenging aspect of relationships

D.Two people cannot have identical reactions to a situation and different opinions do exist

E.No matter how close you are to your friends, you cannot take that comfort level for granted

F.If your friends share their secrets, there's a good possibility that they have much faith in you

G.However, people who are fortunate to have been blessed with true friends are never alone in any battle

Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. With whom will you share things that you don't want everyone to know? 说明横线句应该是与朋友之间分享秘密有关,故F项“If your friends share their secrets, there's a good possibility that they have much faith in you”如果你的朋友分享了他们的秘密,很可能他们对你非常信任。 Whom do you look up to for advice when you need it the most? It has to be either your parents or your friends. 故B项“You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion”符合上下文串联。 Arguments and heated discussions are a part of every relationship, and this is also true for friendship. 横线句应该表示与之相似内容,故D项“Two people cannot have identical reactions to a situation and different opinions do exist”对于同一个情景,两个人不可能有温情相同的反应,也总会有不同的观点。 There are times in life when you find yourself a lonely soldier. Your friends will never let you down and will strongly stand for you when you need encouragement.

Everyone agrees that it’s necessary to reduce carbon emissions (排放物) around the world. There is less agreement over exactly how nations should go about achieving a more carbon - free planet. Thus, the environmental equivalent: cap – and – trade carbon emissions, or place a carbon tax on all users?

With cap - and - trade programs, governments limit the level of carbon produced by an industry. Companies that hold their emissions below the cap can sell their remaining allowance on a carbon market, while companies that go beyond their limit must purchase credits on that market. Carbon taxes are more straightforward: a set tax rate is placed on the consumption of carbon with the idea that raising the price will encourage industries and individuals to consume less. At the moment, cap-and-trade has the upper hand, but doesn’t defeat the tax just yet.

Supporters of the tax argue that a cap and trade system would be too difficult to administer and too easily gamed by industries looking to sidestep emissions caps. Cap-and-trade advocates contradict that like all other flat taxes, a carbon collection would relatively burden lower income families, who spend a greater percentage of their income on energy than rich households.

So which system will have a larger effect on carbon consumption? A 10% carbon tax might reduce the demand for carbon about 5 % or less, according to an analysis by the Carbon Tax Center, an environmental advocacy group. That may not be enough. Businesses and governments haven’t figured out how the two competing systems can work together, but in the end, the world may need both.

B. are allocated the same amount of carbon consumption

3.Carbon taxes work by _________.

A. burdening well off families

B. encouraging industries to consume carbon

C. raising the price for carbon consumption

D. limiting the carbon consumption of industries only

4. The underlined word “cap” in the second paragraph most likely refers to_________. A. limit   B. credit      C. level       D. rate

When it comes to friends, I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me. I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love. It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share.

When I was in the eighth grade, I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious” about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say: “Let’s start with a train whistle today.” We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year, we, too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped.

When I lived for a time in London, I had a friend, He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time. We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other.

For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine. We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way, in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that, at certain times, we seem to be parts of the same mind. In my most interesting moments, I often think: “Yes, I must tell….”We have never met.

It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist(心理学家),who will only fill up the healing(愈合的)silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.

I arrived at my mother’s home for our Monday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from the kitchen. Mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their beauties. She was preparing for a quilt show at the Elmhurst Church. When we began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I pulled it out. “What is this?” I asked.

“Oh?” Mom said, “That’s Mama’s quilt.”

I spread the quilt. It looked at if a group of school children had pieced it together; irregular designs, childish pictures, a crooked line on the right.

“Grandmother made this?” I said, surprised. My grandmother was a master at making quilts. This certainly didn’t look like any of the quilts she had made.

“Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes,” she said. “I’m still working on it. See, this is what I’ve done so far.”

I looked at it more closely. She had made straight a crooked line. At the center of the quilt, she had stitched(缝) a piece of cloth with these words:  “My mother made many quilts. She didn’t get all lines straight. But I think this is beautiful. I want to see it finished. Her last quilt.”

“Oh, this is so nice, Mom,” I said. It occurred to me that by completing my grandmother’s quilt, my mother was honoring her own mother. I realized, too, that I held in my hands a family treasure. It started with the loving hands of one woman, and continued with the loving hands of another.

1.Why did the author go to mother’s home?

A. To see her mother’s quilts.

B. To help prepare for a show.

C. To get together for the family dinner.

D. To discuss her grandmother’s life.

2.The author was surprised because      .

A. the quilt looked very strange.

B. her grandmother liked the quilt.

C. the quilt was the best she had seen.

D. her mother had made some changes

3.The underlined wood “crooked” in the passage most probably means       .

A. unfinished

B. broken

C. bent

D. unusual

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A. A Quilt Show

B. Mother’s Home

C. A Monday Dinner

D. Grandmother’s Quilt
