It was on her 14th birthday that her first book , In the Forest of the Night , was accepted for publication. It was a huge success gaining the attention of millions of young readers. At 16, her second novel, Demon in My View, also reached the bookstores. Several books later , the teenage author still works away in her room, surrounded by shelves full of dark tales about vampires(吸血鬼)and witches. Amelia Atwater – Rhodes is widely seen as America’s finest teen writer and was named one of Teen People’s “20 Teens Who Will Change the World.”

Born in 1984, she began making up stories when she was about three years old. “I never stopped and said, ‘I want to write’,” Amelia remembers. “I loved stories and created stories before I was old enough to know how to write them down.”

In her family, reading was basic and fun. “My parents encouraged me to read---- and to read anything I wanted, so long as I was reading,” she said. “They never restricted what I read. Later, when I started writing, they never criticized what I did or said I was ‘too young’. They never said it was impossible for me to achieve what I have.”

In her short but successful career, Amelia has tried different styles. But vampires were the first characters to really come alive in her work. From them she has developed a whole world, one which she always enjoys learning more about.

As a published teen writer, Amelia’s advice to other teens who dream of being authors is: just do it! “I believe anything is possible. Don’t give up your dreams just because you fear failure. Getting a book published is difficult, but if I can do it, others can too . ”

In her family, reading was basic and fun. “My parents encouraged me to read---- and to read anything I wanted, so long as I was reading,” she said. “They never restricted what I read. Later, when I started writing, they never criticized what I did or said I was ‘too young’.说明她小时候阅读了大量的书籍,这给她以后的写作打下来坚实的基础。故A正确。 2.B 推理判断题。根据第二段后三句“My parents encouraged me to read......They never said it was impossible for me to achieve what I have.”说明她的父母亲一直很支持她的阅读和写作,从来不会批评或阻止她写作。故B正确。 3.A 词义猜测题。本题考查的词义猜测题中的代词指代题。根据第四段二、三句But vampires were the first characters to really come alive in her work. From them she has developed a whole world, one which she always enjoys learning more about.说明在她的作品中,吸血鬼是非常重要的角色,她写的书中很多都是和吸血鬼有关的。所以说从吸血鬼的身上她形成了一整个的故事世界。故本句中的them就是指前面一句中的vampires.故A正确。 4. 【名师点睛】 本文5. that, this, he, him 或them可以指上文提到的人或物,其中it和that还可以指一件事。 例题1:(2008年全国高考—江苏卷E篇) William Shakespeare said, ―The web of our life is of a mingled yarn (纱线), good and ill together. 74.The underlined word "mingled" in the last paragraph most probably means________. A. simple B. mixed C. sad D. happy 答案与解析:选B。由“a mingled yarn”后文的“good and ill together”重复说明可以 知道mingled含义和mixed(混合的)最接近。 例题2:Capacitance, or the ability to store electric charge, is one of the most common characteristics of electronic circuits. 分析:由同位语我们很快猜出生词capacitance词义---电容量。 需要注意的是:同位语前还常有or, similarly, that is to say, in other words, namely等副词或短语出现。 例题3:Semantics, the study of the meaning of words, is necessary if you are to speak and read intelligently. 分析:此例逗号中短语意为―对词意义进行研究的学科。该短语与前面生词semantics是同位关系,因此我们不难猜出semantics指―语义学。 在复述中构成同位关系的两部分之间多用逗号连接,有时也使用破折号,冒号,分 号,引号,和括号等。 考点:考查人物传记类阅读

It is said that most people have not more than 30 friends at any given time, and 400 over the whole of their lives. However, on social networking sites, most users have about 150 friends. If these numbers are correct, then friendship means different things in different situations.

Also, there are no rules about friendship. There are no instructions about how to make friends, how to keep friendships going, and how to finish friendships if we want to move on. People have very different opinions about this: some people would die for their friends and they value them more than family. Others say that friends are temporary, only there to help each other until they are no longer needed. If people with such different views become friends, this can lead to problems.

Because of these different definitions of friendship, it is easy to be unhappy about our friendships. We may want them to be deeper or closer, or we may want to have more friends in our lives. Sometimes we simply do not have the time to develop our friendships, or we fear we have left it too late in life to start. If we move to another country or city, we have to find ways to make new friends again.

This dissatisfaction shows us how important friendships are for most of us. We should not think that it could be too late to build friendships. We also need to understand that the need to be around other people is one that is shared by many. Therefore, we should not be too frightened about starting to talk to people who in the future may become our friends: it is likely that they too would like to get closer to us. Remember what people say: strangers are friends we have not met yet.

A. Over 400 friends in their whole lives

B. 30 friends or fewer at a certain stage

C. 400 internet friends in their whole lives

D. 150 internet friends at a certain stage.

2.What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

A. There is a rule about making friends

B. People with different views can become friends

C. Friendships mean different things to different people

D. Some people would die for their friends if they need to

3.We can learn from the text that most of us_________.

A. need to be with others

B. build friendships late in life

C. are dissatisfied with our friends

D. are frightened to talk to people

4.What is the author’s attitude towards talking to a stranger?

A. Uninterested        B. Cautious        C. Doubtful         D. Positive

I was with a group of businessmen, and we were dealing with a question—What is a good person?

At a certain point during the discussion, one of the students—a young man of about 30—described an event that happened at Christmas. He and his five-year-old son were decorating the Christmas tree, and a little boy came to the front door begging. If you ever visit Mexico, you will see that the people there take begging as nothing to get upset about and nothing to get embarrassed by.

So, this little boy came to the door, a boy about the same age as my student’s son. The father and the son went to the front door, and the father went back with his five-year-old son and said to him, “Give him one of your toys.” At the words, the little boy quickly picked up one toy, and his father said to him, “No, no-give him your favorite toy.”

And the little boy, like a little tiger, said, “No way!” He cried; he refused. But the father, like a big tiger in a way, insisted gently, “No, you must give him one of your favorite toys.”

And finally the boy, with his head down, picked up a toy he had just gotten. The father waited in the living room, and the boy walked to the front door with the toy in his hand. The father waited and waited.

What do you think happened?

After a couple of minutes, his son came running back into the living room, his face lighted up. “Daddy,” he said, “can I do that again?”

I think I have got the answer to the question.

1.From the passage, we can learn that in Mexico ________.

A. begging is looked down upon

B. begging is considered as a normal part of life

C. visitors all over the world treat beggars kindly

D. few people are living a poor life

2.The sentence “Daddy, can I do that again?” showed that the boy ________.

A. got pleasure by helping the little beggar

B. wanted to please his father

C. began to like the little beggar

D. wanted to be the little beggar’s friend

3.According to the writer, “being a good person” means ________.

A. having the courage to correct his/her mistakes

B. being friendly to beggars

C. being ready to give

D. being able to teach children to tell right from wrong

My father and I stayed at the South Lake Hotel for a week when we visit Beijing last month. It is in the downtown area, but it is easy to go to anywhere from the hotel by public transport. We lived in a comfortably double-room with a big bath. What I liked best were the free high-speed Internet connection in the room. I checked my email messages every day. I also shared for my friends many photos taking in Beijing. The food was wonderful with reasonable prices, and we enjoyed several local dish.

It is such great hotel that I would recommend it to any friend of me who is going to Beijing.
