At some point in your life, you will need to ask someone for a favor(帮助), whether it’s at your workplace, at home or in a social setting. If you need a guy to help you with something, there are ways to approach him that will help you ask for that favor.

Find the right guy to ask for a favor.1.For example, if you need someone to look after your house while you are away for a month, don’t select a guy who has a wife and kids and can’t possibly leave them to do you the favor.

2.Even if it’s a small favor, try to find a place that has some privacy(私密性). This is especially important if you’re asking for a favor that you don’t want someone else to hear, such as borrowing money from him.

Use special words to set the table so that he knows you’re in need. 3.Or words such as “I really need your help” are OK. These words give him the chance to understand that he can be of help.

Ask for help in a clear way that expresses what you need, the reason why you need it, and more importantly, the parameters(限定因素) of the favor. For example, if you’re asking him to take you to the airport, tell him when you need him to arrive. If you’re borrowing money from him, say the amount and the reason why you need the money. 4.

Ask for help in such a way that you give him the chance to refuse. 5.If you don’t give him that choice, he may feel as if it’s something he has to do instead of something he wants to do.

A. Find the right place to ask him.

B. Be a kind person who always helps others.

C. The guy must have the ability to help you.

D. Besides, you should tell him when you will give it back.

E. You can say, “I’m really in trouble. Can you help me?”

F. It can be difficult to find the right words to tell what you need.

G. Make it clear that you completely understand if he can’t help you.

Nola is a 41-year-old northern white rhino(犀牛) that lives at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido, California. She is one of only four remaining northern white rhinos in the world, and the only one in the western part of the earth. The other three live in Kenya(肯尼亚).

Rhinos have lived on earth for more than 40 million years, but they are now at the risk of dying out. Hunters illegally hunt rhinos for their horns(角), which are used for art, jewelry, and decorations. They sell the horns for thousands of dollars per pound, though it is not allowed by law. Rhino horns are also prized as a key part in traditional medicine, even though scientific tests have proven that the horns cannot cure illnesses. Experts say that every eight hours, one rhino will be hunted.

Scientists are trying to find ways to prevent rhinos from dying out. In 1975, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research started the Frozen Zoo, a program through which researchers have collected cell samples(细胞样品) from more than 8,000 different animal species until now, including the northern white rhino. Scientists hope that by studying the rhino cells, they will gain greater understanding of the species, and will find ways to increase its number.

Jeanne Loring works with the Frozen Zoo. Loring’s research focuses on pluripotent stem cells, which are cells that can renew and become any cell type. Loring’s lab at TSRI is working together with scientist Oliver Ryder of the San Diego Zoo to use pluripotent stem cells to try to increase the number of the northern white rhino. Loring said the goal is to start producing new rhinos through this method over the next couple of years.

I arrived home late one night last week. I spent a moment looking up into the night sky. The stars above shone(照耀) brightly. The sky looked really beautiful.

I started to think about other things as I stared at the night sky. It hit me clearly that these beautiful stars were always there but I had spent very little time in the past really appreciating them. It also reminded me that we often think we deserve many things around us, being too caught up in our own little world. It is a world filled with busy work and the demands placed on us from what we have allowed to take up our time.

Recently, I was asked to repair a house for a family member. When I arrived, it seemed like any other day when I spent my time doing something I knew how to do. But there was something else that came to mind as I started to work with my son-in-law. I considered it a good opportunity. The opportunity was more than just spending time repairing a house. It was an opportunity to further a bond between two people who are related by marriage but are unrelated through few experiences. It was an opportunity to build a stronger bond, a bond that can only happen when two people are exposed(暴露) to each other’s skills and faults. It was also an opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with another who wanted to learn.

There are many chances to see beyond what is viewed as normal, but we must be able to actually open our eyes and heart to these events and appreciate them. To be in tune with what is around you, you must use the attitude of a child who screams with joy the first time they see a rainbow, hear the pretty song of a bird, or enjoy the beauty of Christmas decorations.

1.While looking at the night sky, the author realized that __________.

A. the sky wasn’t always beautiful

B. he had wasted his life for many years

C. he didn’t know what he really wanted

D. he didn’t appreciate things around him

2. What does the underlined word “bond” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. Relationship.             B. Friendship.

C. Trust.                    D. Respect.

3.While repairing the house, the author considered it a good opportunity to _________.

A. learn some important skills

B. show others his skills and faults

C. become closer with his son-in-law

D. earn some money for his family

4. Why does the author talk about what a child does in the last paragraph?

A. Because children know what they really want.

B. Because children can help us think of our childhood.

C. Because children can enjoy the simple beauty of things.

D. Because children actually value family more than adults do.

It was an extremely hot day. My younger brother Walt and I had decided to go swimming in the stream behind Mr Blickez’s house, because it would be the only way to cool ourselves down. Across his farm and through some woods was a deep swimming hole supplied by several cold springs(泉).

The only problem with our plan was that this farm was guarded by a huge mean Hereford bull(公牛). Mr Blickez had told us that Elsie, the animal’s name, was the meanest bull in town, maybe even the county, and we believed in him. But the hotter it got, the more we thought there was reason to doubt about what he said. For one thing, we remembered Mr Blickez liked telling tall tales; for another, Elsie seemed like a strange name for a bull. Finally, I talked Mom into asking permission for us to walk through the farm, and Mr Blickez finally agreed.

On our way across the farm, we stopped at the fence to admire the swimming hole. The sun shone brightly across the cool waters. We couldn’t wait to get there. Suddenly, Walt shouted loudly. Elsie had run to him and was licking(舔) his back. I immediately hid under the fence. However, when I looked up, I saw that Elsie wasn’t a big mean bull at all. She was just a friendly young cow, and she was going to keep licking my brother’s back as long as he stood still.

When we discovered the truth, we were so happy. We then ran to the swimming hole and jumped in. The water was just as wonderful as we had dreamed. After that day, we had many good days and we often visited our secret swimming hole guarded by the so-called “big mean bull”.

1.The author and his brother decided to go to swim because __________.

A. there was no water to take a shower at home

B. the weather was so hot that they couldn’t stand it

C. Mr Blickez invited them to his house for swimming

D. they wanted to try their newly-found swimming hole

2. What was the problem faced by the author and his brother?

A. They didn’t know where to swim.

B. They had to face a very mean bull.

C. Their mother didn’t want them to swim.

D. They didn’t know how to get to the stream.

3.What can we know about Mr Blickez?

A. He often tells lies.

B. He is very shy.

C. He is an honest man.

D. He is very kind to children.

4.When Elsie saw the author’s brother, she __________.

A. tried to attack him

B. immediately ran away

C. showed her friendliness

D. tried to drive him away
