Years of expecting this time has finally arrived; there were times when I thought we would never get here. We are having three graduations in one family. My daughter is graduating from 4-year College in nursing, and my son is graduating from a high school, and I also just graduated last week. The dream was planted many years ago. I had always dreamt of going back to school, but it was too worrying and too hard.

Three years ago, I lost one of my dear friends. She died suddenly someday. All those thoughts of someday seemed to take on different meanings. So, I decided to take a course, then I took two. I finally took 4 courses. When I was in the second week of school, my family was in a terrible car accident. My husband, my two children and I were on our way to visit my another daughter at work in another city for her twenty-third birthday, and we were hit by a truck a half mile from our house. My husband was seriously hurt, and I was told by doctors many times it was a miracle(奇迹) that he had survived a serious head injury.

The three of us were barely passing after that time period. I had a broken arm and could not write. However, none of us had cold feet. As one of the top ten students in the college, my daughter graduated from college and got her Bachelors Degree. My son was admitted to a famous university after his graduation. I am proud of them.

As my password, I called myself “mountain climber. The journey was difficult and every hill seemed higher to climb. Last week, the highlight of my life was walking across that platform and getting my degree six months before I turn fifty. I am proud of myself, too.

A glass a day keeps obesity(肥胖) at bay. Alcohol has always been thought to cause weight gain because of its high sugar content(含量),but new research suggests a glass a day could form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight, those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight.

A spokesman for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, Proper alcohol intake, especially of wine, may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain”. The International Scientific Forum on Alcohol Research reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that current data do not clearly indicate if moderate drinking increases weight.

Boston Universitys Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the biologic mechanisms(生物学机制) relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of moderate drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes(糖尿病),which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very obese people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers.

The group says alcohol provides calories that are quickly absorbed into the body and are not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking into consideration drinking patterns and including the past tendency of participants to gain weight.

For now there is little evidence that consuming small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming obese. What’s more, a study three years ago suggested that resveratrol, a compound present in grapes and red wine, destroys fat cells.

A. The specific roles of different types of alcoholic drinks are very clear.

Ammie Reddick from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, was only 18 months old when she had the accident that had scarred(留下创伤) her for life. The curious child reached up to grab the wire of a hot kettle in the family kitchen and poured boiling water over her tiny body.

Her mother Ruby turned round and, seeing Ammie horribly burnt, called an ambulance which rushed her daughter to a nearby hospital. Twenty percent of Ammie’s body had been burned and all of her burns were third-degree. There, using tissue(组织) taken from unburned areas of Ammie’s body, doctors performed complex skin transplants(移植) to close her wounds and control her injuries, an operation that took about six hours. Over the next 16 years, Ammie underwent 12 more operations to repair her body.

When she started school at Maxwelton Primary at age 4, other pupils made cruel comments or simply wouldn’t play with her. “I was the only burned child in the street, the class and the school,” she recalled, “some children refused to become friends because of that.”

Today, aged 17, Ammie can only ever remember being a burned person with scars; pain is a permanent part of her body. She still has to have two further skin transplants. Yet she is a confident, outgoing teenager who offers inspiration and hope to other young burned victims.

She is a member of the Scottish Burned Children’s Club, a charity set up last year. This month, Ammie will be joining the younger children at the Graffham Water Center in Cambridgeshire for the charity’s first summer camp. “I’ll show them how to get rid of unkind stares from others,” she says. Ammie loves wearing fashionable sleeveless tops, and she plans to show the youngsters at the summer camp that they can too. “I do not go to great lengths to hide my burns scars,” she says, “I gave up wondering how other people would react years ago.”

1.How many operations has Ammie already had?

A. Twelve            B. Thirteen

C. fourteen         D. Fifteen

2.What did other children do when Ammie first went to school?

A. They were friendly to her.
