Eleven-year old Nya lives in South Sudan. For seven months of the year, she has to make two long walks to a pond near her village to fetch water for her family.During the dry months, the family moves to a camp by a lake where Nya and her family dig the clay of the lake bed with their hands and wait for hours to gather a small amount of dirty water that trickles in.

1.    Often they are unable to go to school to learn how to read and write.

But did you know that water is one of the most abundant resources on our planet? Water makes up 71%of the Earth’s surface. 2.   .We often tend to take water for granted until it is in short supply.

To bring our awareness to this life-giving resource, the United Nations determined in 1993 that March 22nd every year will be observed to celebrate World Water Day.

Every year, the United Nations General Assembly sets a theme for the World Water Day.3.    The theme in 2016-water and jobs—intends to bring our attention to the quality of life of the workers who ensure the safety and availability of this critical resource.

4.   Workers in factories around the world fall ill and die when they have poor access to clean water.

In many countries, women and children like Nya walk several hours every day to bring home water to their families. 5. Now imagine,if clean and safe water was guaranteed—these children could be learning skills that could help them find better work.

A.But these jobs are often not paid for nor are they recognized.

B.This year’s theme is“Better Water,Better Jobs”.

C.What would happen if we run out of clean water?

D.Every day countless kids like Nya work hard to fetch clean water for their families.

E.Unfortunately only 3%of the water is fresh water that can support human and other animal life.

F.It is hard for these poor kids to fetch enough clean water.

G.Did you know that 340,000 workers die each year because of inadequate water supply?

Often they are unable to go to school to learn how to read and write提到一些孩子经常不能去学校学习,可知符合题意的只有答案D,即解释孩子们不能去学校学习的原因,是因为孩子们要努力工作为家人们获得干净的饮用水。 2.E前文Water makes up 71%of the Earth’s surface提到地球的71%被水覆盖,下文We often tend to take water for granted until it is in short supply提到水资源短缺,所以此处应是虽然地球上的水资源丰富,但能饮用的淡水资源确实很短缺,所以答案是E:不幸的是只有3%的水资源可以供人类和动物饮用。 3.B前文提到美国会为世界水日设定一个主题,下文提到2016年世界水日的主题关于水与工作,所以可知处处应是2016年世界水日的主题,符合题意的只有答案B。 4.G下文 Workers in factories around the world fall ill and die when they have poor access to clean water可知世界上还有很多人因为得不到干净的饮用水而生病或者是死亡,所以此处涉及到的是因缺乏饮用水而引起的后果,符合题意的只有答案G。 5. 考点:日常生活类阅读。

There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head.A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity(中等强度的)exercise have brains that look,on average,10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.

“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,”said Dr.Clinton Wright of the University.Of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy.Walking, golf, bowling and yoga didn’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss,Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.

The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks.Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI.Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.

We found that those with moderate heavy activity had higher scores and slower decline than inactive patients when comparing the results,”the study team wrote.

Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s but may delay it.The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.

1.According to the study, moderate heavy exercise________.

A.makes people’s heart better than their heads

B.helps people keep a younger brain

D.makes people look like potatoes

2.What’s true about the study?

A.Most people surveyed took low-intensity exercise.

B.Only 900 people took part in the bigger study.

C.High-intensity exercise is better.

D.Ten people scored best on the test.

3.How did the study team come to the conclusion?

A.By observing people exercise.

B.By using examples.

C.By making a comparison.

D.By doing a brain MRI.

4.What’s the best title for this passage?

A.How to keep healthy

B.Ways to make your brain work better

C.To exercise or not

D.Moderate exercise keeps your brain younger

Born and raised in London,England, but of South Asian heritage,Malik is a fearless woman of talent. Her play,Unveiled, exposes racism, hate, crime, love,Islam(伊斯兰教),culture, language and life in one“amazing show,”said Jennifer Considine, professor of communication at UW Oshkosh.

Considine said that the dislike of or prejudice against Islams,is very common in society, and it’s driven by a lack of understanding.“Her play will open students’eyes to seeing the wearing of the veil in a different way—and to maybe understanding that experience a bit differently,”Considine said.
