Practice

Practice answering interview questions and practice your responses to the typical job interview questions and answers most employers ask. Think of concrete examples you can use to highlight your skills.

Research

Do your homework about the employer and the industry so you are ready for the question what do you know about this company. 2. If you’re not sure of the name, call and ask ahead of the interview. Try to relate what you have learned about the company when answering questions.

3.

Make sure your interview dress is neat, tidy and appropriate for the type of firm you are interviewing with. Bring a nice folder with copies of your resume. Include a pen and paper for note taking.

Be On Time

4. Try to arrive at the interview on time. Being on time means five to ten minutes early. If necessary, take some time to drive to the interview location ahead of time.

Stay Calm

During the job interview try to relax and stay as calm as possible. 5. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Listen to the entire question (active listening) before you answer and pay attention.

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.

Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or less degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries like the UK or France people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.

Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.

Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.

People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

1.In some countries, eating together at restaurants may make it easier for people to ________.

A. get to know each otherB. share the same culture

C. keep each other companyD. develop closer relations

2.The author mentions his experience in Thailand to show that ________.

A. the English prefer to make long speeches

B. even talk and silence can be culturally different

C. too many words are of no use

D. people from Thailand are quiet and shy by nature

3.What would be the best title for the text?

A. How to Understand Each Other.

B. Multicultural Environment.

C. How to Build Up a Relationship.

D. Cross-Cultural Differences.

There are many people who could be Olympic Champions. I’d estimate (估计) five million people could have beaten me in the pole-vault(撑杆跳高) on the years when I won it, at least five million. Men were stronger, bigger, and faster than I could have done it, but they never picked up a pole, never made the efforts to vault their legs off the ground to try to get over the bar.

Greatness is all around us. It’s easy to be great because great people will help you. What was fantastic about all the conventions(大会) I went to was that the greatest in the business would come and share their ideas, their methods and their techniques with everyone else. I have seen the greatest salesmen showing young salesmen exactly how they did it. They didn’t hold back. I have also found it true in the world of sports.

I’ll never forget the time I was trying to break Dutch Warmer Dam’s record. I was about a foot below his record, so I called him on the phone. I said, “Dutch, can you help me? I seem to have leveled off. I can’t get any higher.”

He said, “Sure, Bob, come on up to visit me and I’ll give you all I got.” I spent three days with the master, the greatest pole-vaulter in the world. For three days, Dutch gave me everything he’d seen. There were things that I was doing wrong and he corrected them. To make a long story short, I went up eight inches. That great guy gave me the best that he had.

Great people will share. Great people will tell you their secrets. Look for them, call them on the phone or buy their books. Go where they are, get around them and talk to them. It is easy to be great when you get around great people.

1.What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Benefit from the Greatness around Us

B.Many Men Are Better than Me

C.Share Your Greatness with People around You

D.My Hearty Thanks to Warmer Dam

2.The author of this passage must be ________.

A.a world record holder in pole vault

B.a Dutch pole-vaulter

C.an Olympic Champion

D.a student of Warmer Dam’s

3.The underlined phrase “leveled off” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.

A.go down in levelB.stayed in a certain level

C.gone up in levelD.progressed on

4.Why does the author think well of the conventions he attended?

A.Because many great people also attended them.

B.Because they were supported by many great businessmen.

C.Because he learned to share his greatness with others.

D.Because great people were willing to share.

“A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right", says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is.In Mollie’s opinion, it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing."If you aren't telling a story, you’re a very dead writer indeed." she says. With the chief function of a writer being to entertain, Mollie is indeed an entertainer."I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language,’ she says, "This love goes back to early childhood.I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said ‘Nonsense, Mollie; dear, you’ll be a writer.’ So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer."

This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical(自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie’s ambition and her struggle towards its achievement.Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地) brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup(金凤花)meadows and strawberry fields—sadly now covered with modern houses."I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood.I’ll never go back, "she said."Never.When I set one of my books in Scotland” she said, “I can recall my romantic feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that’s important because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.

1.What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book?

A.It should not aim at a narrow audience.

B.It should be attractive to young readers.

C.It should be based on original ideas.

D.It should not include too much conversation.

2.In Mollie Hunter’ s opinion, which of the following is one sign of a poor writer?

A.Being poor in life experience.

B.Being short of writing skills.

C.The weakness of description.

D.The absence of a story.

3.What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a young child?

A.She expected to become a writer.

B.She didn’t enjoy writing stories.

C.She didn’t have any particular life aims.

D.She didn’t respect her teacher’ views.

4.What’s the writer’s purpose in this text?

A.To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter’s book.

B.To introduce Mollie Hunter’s works to a wider audience.

C.To provide information for Mollie Hunter’s existing readers.

D.To describe Mollie Hunter’s most successful books.
