An extra 30 minutes in the morning will make a difference. As long as you get to bed on time, waking up 30 minutes earlier should seem natural after just a few days.   3.

Writing things down means you don't have to worry about forgetting to do them.   4.  Write down anything that cannot be put off to following day.

People born in winter are more likely to suffer mental health disorders, according to a recent study carried out by researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

Researchers raised baby mice from birth to weaning (断奶) in either “summer” light cycles of 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark or “winter” cycles of 8 hours of light and 16 hours of dark. A third group experienced 12 hours of light and 12 hours of dark a day.

Then half the winter mice stayed in a winter cycle, while half switched to a summer schedule. The summer mice were similarly split. The mice raised in equal periods of light and dark were split into three groups, one of which stayed on the 12hour schedule, one of which joined the winter group, and one of which joined the summer group.

After 28 days, it turns out the summerborn mice behaved the same whether they stayed on the summer cycle or switched to winter. But among the winterborn mice, those stayed in winter kept their previous schedule, while those that switched to summer stayed active for an extra hour and a half, which indicates that mice born and weaned in a winter light cycle showed dramatic disruptions(破坏) in their biological clocks.

The finding is the first of its kind in mammals, and it could explain why people born in winter are at higher risk for mental health disorders.

“We know that the biological clock regulates(管理) mood in humans,” said study researcher McMahon. “If the mechanism (机制) similar to the one that we found in mice operates in humans, then it could not only have an effect on a number of behavioral disorders, but also have a more general effect on personality.”

1. How many groups of mice are there finally in all in the experiment?

A.Four.       B.Five.    C.Six.    D.Seven.

2.What's the main idea of the text?

3. The underlined word “split”(Paragraph 3) can be replaced by ________.

A.divided           B.torn                C.hit  D.ended

4.Who is probably the reader of the passage?

A.A jobhunter.

Telepathy (心灵感应) is the ability to communicate without the use of the five senses. It's an instinct (本能) which can be woken up in times of emergency or need. When we feel that something is happening or about to happen by instinct,we're using resources within the unconscious (潜意识的) mind. When the resources of two persons' unconscious minds link together into the same frequency (频率),we call it telepathy.

We can either send or receive telepathy. If you know who is calling before you answer the ringing phone, you are probably a good receiver. If you think of a person and he/she calls you,you are most likely to be better at sending.

You can easily put your ability to the test. Thinking of somebody and wish him or her to contact you. Be patient. The other person may not be a good receiver, but they should contact you much earlier than would normally be expected. Or whenever the phone rings, try ‘feeling’ who is contacting you. Don't guess, but try to feel it with your mind. However,if neither of these works for you, that doesn't mean that you have no ability of telepathy. As mentioned earlier, telepathy is most likely to turn up in case of emergency.

Telepathy dreams often contain telepathic messages. Two people may both dream of the other and find that their dreams have a clear connection. These people are probably linking to each other's unconscious mind.

Telepathy & relationship. The more people spend time together, the more likely they are to be able to link up to the other's mind, especially when separated. There are two reasons for this. One is that they understand the other's mind through time spent together;the other is that there is usually a strong desire to communicate. A mother will often sense that her child is in danger. This is due to the child's eagerly wanting his or her mother, knowing that this is the person who would always want to be there for them, and the mother's deep desire to protect her child from harm.

1. Telepathy happens when one ________.

A.has a similar dream with another person.

B.is good at guessing

C.wants to call his/her best friend

D.doesn't know a stranger

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The more people separate, the more likely that telepathy will occur in their life.

B.Telepathy occurs when people make use of their five senses.

C.Telepathy happens when people live far away and have no chance to see one another again.

D.One is better at sending than receiving telepathy if one receives a friend’s call as one wishes.

3. Which of the following belongs to telepathy?

A.Your action in your dream.

B.People's communication over the telephone.

C.A mother's sense of her child being in danger.

D.A couple's long separation.

4.Which one can be the title of the passage?

A.Receiving Telepathy

B.Dream of telepathy

C.Telepathy: People’s Dream

D.Mind-to-Mind Contact

Proudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stonefaced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had read carefully, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”

Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip (掷) a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails,my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver.

Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly class, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear,“My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revolution.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?

Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No redos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not fair, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my opinion to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!

1.What did the author's classmates think about his report?

A.Positive.         B.Ridiculous

C.Boring.           D.Puzzling.

2.Why was the author confused about the task?

A.He was unfamiliar with American history.

B.He followed the advice and flipped a coin.

C.He forgot his teacher's instructions.

D.He was not familiar with the new school.

3.The underlined word “burning” in Para. 3 probably means ________.

A.annoyed     B.ashamed    C.ready     D.eager

4.In the end, the author turned things around ________.

A.by redoing his task

B.through his own efforts

C.with the help of his grandfather

D.under the guidance of his headmaster

“Have a nice day!” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and safe since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have a nice day. Next!” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. The words come out in the same tone (腔调) with a fixed procedure. They are spoken at me, not to me. Obviously, the concern for my day and everyone else's is the management's attempt to increase business.

The expression is one of those behaviors that help people get along with each other. Sometimes it indicates the end of a meeting. As soon as you hear it, you know the meeting is at an end. Sometimes the expression saves us when we don't know what to say.  “Oh, you just had a tooth out? I'm terribly sorry, but have a nice day.

The expression can be pleasant. If a stranger says “Have a nice day” to you, you may find it heartwarming because someone you don't know has tried to be nice to you.

Although the use of the expression is an insincere, meaningless social custom at times, there is nothing wrong with the sentence except that it is a little uninteresting. The salesgirl, the waitress, the teacher, and all the countless others who speak it without thinking may not really care about my day. But in a strange and comfortable way, it's nice to know they care enough to pretend they care when they really don't care all that much. While the expression may not often be sincere, it is always spoken. The point is that people say it all the time when they like.

1. How does the author understand Maxie's words?

A.Maxie shows her anxiety to the author.

B.Maxie really wishes the author a good day.

C.Maxie encourages the author to stay happy.

D.Maxie really worries about the author's safety.

2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.The salesgirl is rude to the customers.

B.The salesgirl is bored with her work.

C.The salesgirl cares about me.

D.The salesgirl says the words as usual.

3.According to the last paragraph, people say “ Have a nice day” ______________.

A.as a habit         B.as thanks

C.sincerely         D.encouragingly
