What do the world’s most successful people all have in common?

By examining the work habits of over 150 greatest writers and artists and scientists, the researchers including Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeiffer found that high achievers like Robert Moses turned out to be all alike:

Busy! Busy!

  1.  In a study of general managers in industry, John Kotter reports that many of them work 60 to 65 hours per week—which translates into at least six 10-hour days. The ability and willingness to work difficult and tiring hours has characterized many powerful figures. Energy and strength provide many advantages to those seeking to build power.

Just Say No!

The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say “no” to almost everything. And that’s what gives them the time to accomplish so much.   2.  And focus means saying “no” to a lot of distractions (分神).

  3.

Ignore your weaknesses and keep improving your strengths. Don’t waste time exploring skill areas where you have little competence. Instead, focus on—and build on—your strengths. This means knowing who you are, what you are and what you are good at.

Create Good Luck!

  4.  There’s a science to it. Richard Wiseman studies lucky people for his book Luck Factor, and breaks down what they do right. Certain personality types are luckier because they behave in a way that offers the chance for good opportunities. By being more outgoing, open to new ideas, following the feeling that something is true, and being optimistic, lucky people create possibilities.

Does applying these principles to your life actually work? Wiseman created a “luck school” to test the ideas—and it was a success. In total, 80 percent of the people who attended Luck School said that their luck had increased.   5.

A. Spend enough time to improve your weakness.

B. Achievement requires focus.

C. On average, these people reported that their luck had increased by more than 40 percent.

D. They never stop working and they never lose a minute.

E. Busy people are more likely to be lucky.

F. Know What You Are!

G. Luck isn’t magical.

You know how wonderful you are, and you know that others know how wonderful you are, but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy(嫉妒)? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do, but the good news is that there is. Don’t let jealousy spoil your relationships. Deal with it confidently and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.

It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is, but if you want to save your friendship you’ll have to do just that. Don’t approach them and ask why they are jealous of you unless of course you want to appear totally conceited (逞能), just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you. If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling. Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.

When you figure out what is annoying your friend, ask him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If, for example, (s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you. Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise(妥协). Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy. Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.

Even the best of friendships can be ruined by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t, be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.

1.According to the author, the jealousy emotion is________.

A. normal                B. productive

C. destructive           D. extreme

2.What does the author intend to tell us in paragraph 2?

A. How to solve the problem of jealousy.

B. Why we need to solve the problem of jealousy.

C. How to explain your jealousy to your friends.

D. Why it is hard to deal with the problem of jealousy.

3.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A. There’s always a solution to solve the problem of jealousy.

B. Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.

C. You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution

D. You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or self-development.

4.This passage is mainly intended for________.

A. female readers           B. students

C. teenagers               D. best friends

If you like texting and are trying to lose weight, a new study found that using texting to track diet and exercise habits may help you lose weight.

Previous research has shown that keeping food and exercise diaries improves the likelihood of success when you are trying to lose weight. Using a computer or a pen and paper to record information, however, can be a burden and cause some people to give up.

Duke University researchers said using text messages to track eating and exercise habits can save time, and increase the chances that people will stick with their weight-loss rules.

The study included 26 obese women with an average age of 38. The women used daily texting as part of their weight-loss program. The text messages focused on tracking personalized goals, such as avoiding sugary drinks or walking 10,000 steps a day. Messages also provided brief feedback (回复) and tips.

Every morning, the women received a text from an automated system that said, “Please text yesterday’s personal information of steps you walked and how many sugary drinks you had.” Based on the women's responses to the text message, the system sent another text with personalized feedback and tips.

After six months, the women who used daily texting lost an average of nearly 3 pounds, while another group of women who used traditional methods to keep food and exercise diaries gained an average of 2.5 pounds, according to the study, which was published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research.

“Text messaging has become popular and may be an effective method to simplify tracking of diet and exercise behavior,” Dori Steinberg, who was responsible for this research, said.

Steinberg said, "Text messaging offers several advantages compared to other self-monitoring methods. Unlike web-based diet and exercise diaries, data in a text message can be entered quickly on nearly all cellphone platforms so it is very convenient to receive feedback. Besides, because of the limited number of words used in text messages, it saves time.”

1.According to the study, traditional methods _________.

A. are easier for people to lose weight

B. may cause people to give up losing weight

C. provide brief feedback and tips

D. are easy to track diet and exercise behavior

2.Which is NOT true about text messaging according to Steinberg?

A. It saves time.

B. It saves money.

C. It can be entered quickly.

D. It is easy to receive feedback.

3.What’s the best title for the text?

A. Texting helps keep healthy

B. Texting saves time and money

C. Texting can help you lose weight

D. Texting provides brief feedback and tips

4.What’s Dori Steinberg’s attitude towards text messaging?

A. Unknown.                B. Negative.

C. Positive.               D. Unconcerned.

Three-year-old Teddy Lasry was sleeping in his cowboy outfit(套装)yesterday at his family’s Fifth Ave. apartment when he shot up in bed screaming. A 3-foot-long black-and-white snake twisted around his left arm and had just bitten his little finger,

“The babysitter was frightened to death.” said Teddy’s father David Lasry, who, along with his wife, Evelyn, was at work when the snake appeared about 4:00 pm. The horrified babysitter called 911 and the building’s doorman. The doorman and two cable TV workers helped take the snake off the boy’s arm and put it in a garbage bag. Police rushed Teddy to Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he spent two hours attached to a heart monitor as a precaution in case the snake was poisonous. It wasn’t. Experts at the snakebite treatment center at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where policemen took the snake, found out it was a non-poisonous California king snake. But how did it end up in Teddy’s bed?

A little detective work determined that the snake had escaped two weeks ago from its cage in the apartment of a doctor whose family lives four floors below the Lasrys. The owner said his son’s pet snake likely traveled up the water pipes and into his neighbor’s apartment. “It’s a very gentle, very harmless snake, ”he said: “It’s handled by our family all the time.”

David Lasry believed the pet was simply hungry after two weeks of wandering. Evelyn said her son seems to have overcome his fright by thinking of himself as a hero cowboy as he rode in the back of the police car to the hospital.

“I told Teddy he’s a pretty snake, a nice pet snake who got out of his cage.” Evelyn said. “But he asked, ‘Why did he bite my finger, Mamma?’ And I said, ‘Because he saw that you are a big boy, Teddy, in your cowboy outfit and he got scared.’”
