Yang Li, a five-year-old girl living next door to me, very clever. Because she is too old to go to school, she often asks me to teach herself to read, write and draw. She studies hardly and soon she learns a lot of. One evening last month I was doing my English homeworks when she came to my house. She asked me how I learned English. “You would find English a bridge to so much knowledge,” I said. She then wanted to learn English, either. She has learned many English words so far, but her parents are very grateful to me.

Very前加 is old-young herself-her hardly-hard A lot of 去 of homeworks-homework how –why Would-will either –too but-and 【解析】1.very clever. very前加is 本句中的表语very clever说明要接系动词is构成系表结构。故在very前加is。 3. teach herself ... herself → her 固定搭配teach sb to do sth教某人做某事。故把herself → her。 5. A lot of 去 of 句意:不久她学了很多。此处不是“许多--- ”的意思,而是a lot作宾语,故A lot of 去 of。 7. how I learned ... how → why 故把how –why。 8.You would find ... would → will 本句是一个间接引语,故使用will。 9.English, either. either → too either表示“也”;用于否定句,too用于肯定句。 10.but her parents ... but → and

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible(有责任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

1.Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?______.

A. Parents bring up children.

B. Parents give love and care to children.

C. Parents educate children to be good persons.

D. Parents pass away before children grow up.

2.What do you think “florists” do?______.

A. They sell flowers.    B. They make and sell bread.

C. They offer enough room for having family parties.    D. They sell special gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

3.What do you know from the passage?________.

A. Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.

B. Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.

C. Not all the children respect their parents

D. Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.

I believe I’ve gotten this more than once. One lady told me she thought I was 12 and even told her 14-year-old daughter the same. I saw lots of surprised faces because people were told I was actually 19 years old.

I’m actually 19 years old, which isn’t much of a problem. I’m like the oldest of my friends and the shortest, which is pretty funny. That’s probably one of the reasons I fit in so well with them.

I volunteered at a weekend school teaching young children. Parents always looked me up and down like “why is this 13-year-old girl teaching my child?!??!?” I guessed it was because Im also petite(娇小),and I didnt know whether I had a childish face…??? Sometimes I found it funny, sometimes I found it annoying(令人气恼). But I just shrugged(耸肩)it off at last. You know, soon enough people got to know me and then realized I was not actually a 13-year-old girl.

This short thing used to be a problem for me, though. I was very very small when I was younger, so kids would pick on me. When I was 12, 8-year-old girls would look down at me like “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU ’RE TWELVE!” I had always wanted to be tallBut now that I'm older, I got used to it, and I actually love itYou know, I'm fun sized!
