I log onto a computer at the doctor’s office to say I have arrived and then wait until a voice calls me into the examination room.

There, a robotic nurse directs me onto a device and then takes my blood pressure. Some time later, in steps the doctor, who is also a robot. He notes down my symptoms and gives me a prescription. I pay for my visit using a credit card machine and return home without having met another human being.

This scenario(场景) is my nightmarish(噩梦般的) vision of the future, which hasn’t come to passat least not yet.

I should say I really do like many aspects of technology. I am a big fan of air conditioning in the summer and heaters in winter. But I am writing this because I don’t want machines to take over.

When I call my dentist's office and actually get a human being on the line, I am thrilled. And when I see the introduction of yet more self-service checkout stations at the grocery store, I feel like shouting: "When it comes to cashiers(收银员), make mine human, please!"

After all, human cashiers sometimes give you a store coupon (优惠券) for items you are buying. Even more than that, real-life cashiers often take an interest in particularly cute children, which can brighten a young mother's day. A cashier may also show compassion for an elderly person struggling to get that last penny out of her purse.

Machines can be efficient and cost-effective and they often get the job done just fine. But they lack an element so crucial to everyday life.

It is being human that prompts(促使) us to smile at others, which may be what they need at that moment. Call it the spirit, the soul or the heart. It is something no machine will ever have.

1.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the first two paragraphs?

A. To indicate high technology can make our future life very efficient.

B. To warn readers of the possible dangers of robotic nurses and doctors.

C. To describe a possible future scene where robots take control of our life.

D. To predict how technology can affect we see a doctor in the future.

2.What is the main reason that the author prefers being served by humans rather than by robots?

A. Robots don’t offer to give store coupons.

B. Robots are indifferent and emotionless.

C. Services from robots cost less time and more money.

D. Robots can’t do a job as well as humans do.

3.What does the underlined word “element” mean in the eighth paragraph?

A. Humor.    B. The ability to speak.

C. Methods.    D. Effective communication.

4.What’s the main idea of the text?

A. The opinion about using man or machine.

B. Machines give people a lot of convenience.

C. Being human service is better than service from machines.

D. Being human service cost little money.

Why do some parents tend to hold back their disabled children from experiencing life? Even when they are grown, the parents will not allow certain things to happen. It's true that they do have a certain amount of responsibility in protecting their severely disabled adult child, but at what point do they become overly protective?

Parents want to create a safe haven, a place where they know that nothing bad will happen to their beloved child. This seems to be a respectable and notable act in caring for a person with a disability, but it can have a side effect. When protecting their child from suspected hardships, not wanting anything bad to happen to them, they very well may be preventing good things from happening to them.

In life we all make mistakes, it is how we are able to grow and strengthen our character. Parents may feel that in certain instances their child will get hurt or mistreated in some way, so they build walls in their own minds convincing themselves of the need to shelter. However, the disabled, yes even the “severely disabled” deserve to make personal mistakes as well. Even more, they have the right to succeed.

Parents should do everything and anything within their power to see their disabled children lead a somewhat “normal” life. Parents should help their children, not hold them down. This could make them think they are unworthy and that their parents do not believe in them.

Whatever it may be, let them at least try. If they want to attend college, so be it. Parents should find out all they can, and be involved in every detail. Get to know the aides, experience it with them. If they want to dare and someday marry, so be it. Don't shut them out and form bad or critical opinions about them just because you are afraid. Unite as a family and make it work.

1.What side effect will it have when the parents overprotect their disabled children?

A. Their children will never grow up in the future.

B. Their children will find no shelter when they grow up.

C. Their children will become less confident when facing troubles.

D. Their children will less likely meet with good things.

2.What attitude does the author hold towards the parents who overprotect their disabled children?

A. Supportive.    B. Objective.    C. Critical.    D. Uninterested.

3.The suggestions in the last paragraph imply that ________.

A. parents should be a bridge, not a brick wall

B. parents should act as their children’s best friends

C. parents should encourage their children to get married

D. parents should live in harmony with their disabled children

4.What is the best title of this passage?

A. Living Within Parents’ Power

B. Letting Your Disabled Child Succeed

C. Getting out of a Brick Wall in Their Life

D. Helping Your Disabled Child out of Trouble

I was in a charity shop looking at the second hand books. It just so happened that the book shelves were next to the toy section. After a few minutes I became aware of a group of women standing behind me.They were poorly dressed and spoke in what sounded like an eastern European language. As they looked through the clothes rails a little girl, about three years old, came over to the toy section.Immediately her attention was caught by a toy pram(婴儿车). What is it about little girls and toy prams? I don't know, but whatever it is its incredibly cute!    She spoke to her mother and,in halting English her mother asked the shop assistant how much it cost.Three pounds was the answer---about five dollars. The mum looked down at her child, perhaps calculating what she still had to buy and how much money she would have left. Then she simply shook her head.      The child didn't react badly as some might.Being told“no”was obviously not a new experience for her.But she couldn't keep the disappointment from her face.    I had the grand total of four pounds in my pocket, two two-pound coins.A moment later I tapped the mother on the shoulder, pointed to the coins which I had left in the pram and said,“Buy her a dolly too.”    I didn't hang about to see the end result. After all,it's not about being thanked.I made my way out of the shop and into the sunshine.    The money was an investment in the happiness of the world. Was there any better way,I wondered,to get so much happiness for so little money than to buy a little girl a toy pram?
