Stamp collecting is easy when you do it ...

Stamp collecting is easy when you do it as a hobby. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. Sometimes stamps can be got from many sources (来源) for free.

Getting Started

If you have no stamps at all,you might want to buy a packet of 500 or 1,000 different worldwide stamps from a hobby shop or stamp dealer to get started. One good choice is eBay. Try entering phrases like “worldwide stamps” in the search box. However, even if you want to specialize in collecting stamps,my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning. Start off collecting stamps from many sources for free until you have collected enough stamps and had enough experience.

Sorting Stamps

Assume(假) you have some stamps and they are on paper. Before you take them off the paper, you should sort the stamps, for example,by country. This is because dealing with stamps is much easier when they are on paper. When you take them off the paper, they become easy to bend, crease, and tear easily.

Trimming(修剪)Stamps

Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it,even if it appears to be loose enough to do so. First, trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors making sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. I suggest that you leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp when you trim the paper before you are good at doing it.

1.This passage is written for people who________.

A. have no money to collect stamps

B. want to sell their stamps

C. want to collect stamps

D. don’t know how to sort stamps

2.According to the writer,at the very beginning,stampcollecting beginners shouldn’t________.

A. collect common stamps

B. borrow some stamps from their friends

C. act as an inexperienced collector

D. spend a lot of money in buying stamps

3.What does the writer suggest NOT do when trimming stamps?

A. Pull at them to take them off the paper backing when they look loose.

B. Trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors.

C. Leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp.

D. Make sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps.

根据“my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning.” 根据“Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it,even if it appears to be loose enough to do so.” 故选A。 例如: 第一篇阅读的第1小题,此题属于细节理解中的(1),它的A项was the only important American inventor和文章中的Thomas Alva Edison (爱迪生)was awarded more patents(专利) on inventions than any other American. 再比如第三篇阅读的第4小题,此题属于细节理解中的(3),这里的答案并不能从文中直接找到,而要根据文章的最后一段来推测作者当时所流露出的思想感情尤其通过这句话“How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you.”

Dear Lan Lan ,

I’m now writing to you at Hartsop,a village in the Lake District,a place to have most beautiful scenery(景色) in England,I come here to spend Christmas with an English couple. This was planned for overseas students to know the British ways of life by living with British families.

We came two days before Christmas and during our stay,we have had everything we expected:Christmas turkey,Christmas cake,Christmas puddings,Christmas parties and gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing(有趣的),but above all these,we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客) of the family,Roger and Anne Marie.

Anne Marie is a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around. Roger, who is a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more. He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do. In the evenings,we all sit around the fireplace with Tim,a lovely dog,by our side. Like long time no see friends,we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.

After three months away from home,we are again feeling how sweet a home can be. Roger and Anne Marie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a persontoperson feeling, instead of a BritishtoChinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.

How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you. We always talk about“when we go back home next year...”and soon we will turn this into“when we go back home THIS year...”for the New Year’s Day is coming. Miss you.

Love,

Gao Wen
