Dear classmates,

It is a pleasure for I to have a chance to make a short speech today. Recently I had found that some of our classmates study late into the night and do not spare some time to take a rest during the day either. They often cannot help fall asleep in class. And some classmates seldom have breakfast, that is also a bad habit and will surely do harm to our health.

In my opinion, it is extreme important for us to have enough sleep and a proper diet. We must learn to make a use of our time, and only in this way can we keep fit or study well. I wonder if you agree me.

I→me 考查介宾搭配。 在否定句中,代词用any而不是some,故将some改为any。 该句为it is +adj for sb to do sth句型。 make use of sth利用某物,故将多余的a去掉。 9.or→and 考查连词。此处keep fit 和study well 是并列的关系而非选择,因此此处用表示肯定含义的and,故将or改为and。 Agree with sb.

British English may have come first, but around the world, the American way of spelling is now far more popular.

A recent examination of the English language shows that publications now largely use the American version swapping words like “centre” for “center” after the 1880s. To get data, researchers used Google’s Ngram Viewer to analyze the words found in all English-language publications from 1800 to 2000. Entering a word into the viewer will show how frequently it occurs within the massive corpus(语料库)of books around the world.

According to the data, this shift was further strengthened around World War I. Since then, English-language publications have preferred “gray” and “flavor” instead of “grey” and “flavour”. The American spelling has continued to grow over the years, with “liter” passing “liter” around 1900, and “center” becoming the more common choice over “centre” in 1913. “1913 marked a turning point in British spelling, as the American alternative became more frequently used in literature,” the post explains, in regard to “center”. This was just a year before the beginning of World War I, which many views as a key period in America’s rise to superpower status.

Though this switched again between 1920s and the late 1930s, the American, spelling took over for good around 1940, during which time the spelling “airplane” shifted dramatically over “aeroplane”.

Ever since the middle of the 19th century, even the British Isles have slowly rejected the old spelling. The future is gray for British English.

Move over millennials(千禧一代), here comes Generation Z, today’s youngest group.

Born in 1995 or later, a lot of Gen Z-ers are entering into adulthood and will soon join the workforce. People of Generation Z have grown up with the internet. Policy makers, sociologists, as well as employers and marketers, are trying their best to understand these young people. So, how should we pin down the Gen Z-ers?

Most people will agree that the single biggest difference between Gen Z and other generations is how connected they are. This is a group of people who were hooked up to social media as soon as they were born. A recent Guardian article says that the average teenager in the UK has at least 150 followers on Instagram and spends around half an hour a day on Snapchat, an image messaging app. “We are the first true digital natives,” Hannah Payne, an 18-year-old UCLA student and lifestyle blogger. “I can almost create a document, edit it, post a photo on Instagram and talk on the phone at the same time, all from the user-friendly interface(界面) of my iPhone.

The Guardian also notes that young people in the UK are becoming more active in politics. Voting is just one way of making one’s voice heard. Most of Generation Z are still too young to vote, says the Guardian. Instead of party politics, they focus more on single-topic issues such as feminism(男女平等)or climate change. And “much of the civil engagement and organizing they do takes place on social media rather than through traditional political structures,” according to the newspaper.

1.The underlined phrase “pin down” in the second paragraph can be replaced by ______.

A. set an example to    B. have an interest in

C. give an explanation for    D. make a decision on

2.The biggest difference between Generation Z and other generations lies in _________.

A. how linked they are

B. how enthusiastic they are

C. how they communicate with each other

D. how many hours they spend on the Internet

3.What do Instagram and Snapchat have in common?

A. They are newly-created cellphones

B. They are popular among millennials

C. They are online games invented by teenagers

D. They are applications applauded by teenagers

4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A. Generation Z have great interest in politics

B. Most Gen Z-ers haven’t entered the political field

C. Voting is the only way of making yourself noticed

D. Voting on social media is the same as voting through traditional ways
