A great number of people can get injured or even killed resulting from a human stampede (踩踏).The bad thing is that a peaceful group of people can quickly become concerned and panicked(恐慌). 1.. If you are in a crowd, the most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice the exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out. 2.. If you are in a crowd of moving people, wet ground can be slippery or dangerous, causing you to fall.

Be aware of the general atmosphere of the event, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference. If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down. 3.. Take advantage of any space that may open up and try to move sideways to the crowd movement where the flow is weaker.

4..—It gives you movement and protects your chest.

If you fall, get up quickly. If you fall and cannot get up, keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl (蜷缩) up. 5.. Sometimes, finding a right posture(姿势) can save your life.

A. Make yourself know the type of ground you are standing on

B. Do not lie on your stomach or back, as this dangerously leaves your lungs unprotected

C. If you are stepped on, you should shout for help

D. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd

E. Keep your hands up by your chest, like a boxer

F. What’s worse is that the stampede can be caused while there seems no actual danger

G. Raise your arms to the full length

If you’re tired of the big cities and sandy beaches; if you don’t want to head to Disney again, perhaps it’s time for a summer holiday in space. Russia has declared(宣布) plans for its first floating hotel, 217 miles above earth, and it is something of an offering with good service.

Hosting just seven guests in four cabins(座舱), the accommodation (膳宿) will include huge windows with views back to earth and tasty microwave meals will be served instead of the ones often used by astronauts.

Just getting there will be an adventure in itself—it will take two days aboard a rocket—and it won’t exactly be a budget holiday: A five-day stay will cost you£100, 000 to£500, 000 for your journey. The hotel is due to open by 2019 and it will be far more comfortable than the International Space Station (ISS) used by astronauts and cosmonauts.

In the weightlessness of space, visitors can choose to have beds that are either vertical(垂直的) or horizontal(水平的). Tourists, who will be accompanied by experienced astronauts, will dine on food prepared on Earth and sent up on the rocket, to be reheated in microwave ovens(炉子). Many kinds of delicious food will be offered.

Iced tea, mineral water and fruit juices will be included, but alcohol will be strictly forbidden. Toilets will use flowing air instead of water to move waste through the system. Waste water will be recycled.

Sergei Kostenko, chief executive of Orbital Technologies which will construct the hotel, said: “Our planned module inside will not remind you of the International Space Station. A hotel should be comfortable inside, and it will be possible to look at the Earth. The hotel will be aimed at wealthy individuals and people working for private companies who want to do research in space.” The hotel can also be used as an emergency shelter for astronauts aboard the International Space Station if there is a disaster.

It’s really true what people say about English politeness: it’s everywhere. When squeezing() past someone or passing through a crowd in a narrow place, people say “sorry”. When getting off a bus, English passengers say “thank you” rather than the driver. In Germany, people would never dream of doing these things. After all, squeezing past others is sometimes unavoidable(不可避免的), and the bus driver is only doing his job. I used to think the same way, without questioning it, until I started traveling to the British Isles and came to appreciate(欣赏) some more polite ways of communicating with people, and here are some more polite ways of interacting with people in UK.

People thank each other everywhere in England, all the time. When people buy something in a shop, customer and shop assistant in most cases thank each other twice or more. In Germany, it would be surprising to hear more than one thank you in such a conversation. British students thank their lecturers when leaving the room. English employers thank their employees for doing their jobs, which is different from Germans, who would normally think that paying their workers money is already enough.

Another thing I observed during my stay was that English people rarely criticize(批评) others. Even when I was working and mistakes were pointed out to me, my employers repeated several times but none of their explanations were intended as scolding me. It has been my impression that by avoiding scolding, English people are making an effort to make others feel comfortable. This also is showed in other ways. British men still open doors for women, and British men are more likely to treat(请客) women to a meal than German men. However, I do need to point out here that this applies(适用于) to English men a bit more than it would to Scottish men! Yes, the latter are a bit mean(吝啬的).

1.What is the author’s feeling of English politeness?

A. He thinks highly of it.    B. He thinks little of it.

C. He thinks it is unnecessary.    D. He thinks it goes too far.

2.What can be inferred from the passage?

A. British men never treat a woman to dinner.

B. British men think it’s unnecessary to say “thank you” to the bus driver.

C. In Germany, employers often say “thank you” to employees for their job.

D. Germans think it is unnecessary to thank workers because payment is enough.

3.We can learn from the last paragraph that Scottish men ______.

A. like to fight with each other    B. treat women more politely than English men

C. are as generous as English men    D. are unwilling to spend money for women

4.The author develops the text through the method of ______.

A. telling stories    B. making comparisons (对比)

C. giving reasons    D. doing scientific research (调查)

Grandpa worked as a carpenter(木匠) in downtown Chicago. He loved life—especially when he could play a trick(玩笑) on somebody. At those times, his large body shook with laughter while he pretended(伪装) innocent surprise. But on a cold Saturday, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and Grandpa wasn't laughing.

On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.

Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand-new glasses were heading for India!

The Great Depression(经济萧条) was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.

“It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home in sadness. “I've been very faithful in giving my time and money to your work, but now this.”

Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the workers in the church.

“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”

“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my coworkers removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, when I tried on the glasses, I was able to see things clearly again. It was as though the glasses had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”

The people working for the church listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but they thought the director surely must have confused(混淆) their church with another; they knew that there were no glasses on their list of items donated(捐赠) overseas.

But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized God had used him in an unusual way.

1.Which of the following is NOT true about Grandpa according to the passage?

A. He was an outgoing man.    B. He had a large family to support.

C. He sent the glasses to India on purpose    D. He believed in God.

2.The people in the church except Grandpa felt surprised at what the director said because ______.

A. Grandpa didn't tell the director that he was the owner of the glasses

B. the director wanted to return the glasses even though he liked it

C. the director could not get such glasses in their own country

D. the glasses were not included in the donation list

3.What does the underlined word “custom-made” mean mostly?

A. made specially    B. made by a church

C. made with the director’s agreement    D. made by a carpenter

4.Which can be the best title of the passage?

A. Grandfather's Life    B. The Helpful Donations

C. The Perfect Mistake    D. An Impressive Speech

Jane, a student of Oxford University, has bought a bicycle and is concerned about the safety of her new bike. Her friend, Kate, found this article and sent it to her.

How to make your bicycle safe?

A number of crimes(罪行) are against bicycles. About 150,000 bicycles are stolen every year and most of them are never found. You can prevent this from happening by following a few careful steps.

Basic Security

Never leave your bicycle in out-of-the-way places. Always lock your bicycle when you leave. Secure it to lamp posts or trees. Take off smaller parts and carry them with you, for example lights and saddles (车座).

Locks

There are various types of locks. Buy one that has been tested against attack. Ask for a suggestion from a bike shop owner.

Marking

The security marking of your bike can act as a prevention of being stolen, which can also help the police find your bicycle. Your postcode and your house or flat number should be included and clearly recorded. This will provide a simple way to recognize your bicycle.

Registration (注册)

There are many companies that will offer the security marking to your bicycle. They will then store your registration number and personal details in their computer database(数据库). If your bicycle is found, it will be easy to contact you.

Attention

Keep a record of the bicycle by yourself: its production place, model and registration number. You can even take a photograph of it. This will prove the bicycle belongs to you.
