1.It is a new term in today’s tourism industry. But in an age of growing environmental awareness, it is not too difficult for us to imagine and understand this new form of holiday.
Ecotourism, which is considered as a kind of responsible tourism, is typically defined as travel to places where special and unusual plants, animals and cultural heritages are the main attractions.2.Therefore, some natural and cultural spots also form a part of ecotourism.
Ecotourism is developing at great speed. According to a recent report by the World Tourism Organization, ecotourism in recent years has enjoyed an annual growth of about 5% worldwide.3.They included bird watching, hiking, diving, photography and taking part in various kinds of local cultural events.
4.However, it looks like some smaller towns and country areas may well become the new destinations for people to visit tomorrow because they are rich in ecological, cultural and historical resource.
Ecotourism has been gaining increasing recognition and popularity mainly for the relaxing, natural and vivid experience it offers to tourists. People are attracted to nature and long to be close to it. However, a conflict between nature and human beings is unavoidable.5..
A. The definition of ecotourism is beyond words.
B. It takes ecology and culture into consideration.
C. You may not be very familiar with “ecotourism”.
D. More than 80 activities have been listed for ecotourism.
E. People can have great fun enjoying nature through ecotourism.
F. Big cities are still the major places that attract tourists in our society today.
G How to protect natural resources while taking advantage of them is of great importance.
Some inventions are so useful, but seem so simple, that we wonder why no one thought of them long ago. Post-it Notes, the pieces of paper that you can stick almost anywhere and then remove without leaving any sign that they are there, are an example of such an invention.
Post-it Notes were invented about twenty years ago by Art Fry, a scientist at 3M Corporation. The idea for the product came from an upsetting experience he often had while singing in his church choir. Fry used pieces of paper as bookmarks to mark the places in his book of songs, but these bookmarks were always falling out. He knew he needed a bookmark that would stay where he put it, but that he could remove without damaging the pages.
Around that time, Fry heard about a new adhesive(粘合剂) that a colleague, Dr. Spence Silver had created. This adhesive was special because it was sticky, but not too sticky. It was strong enough to hold papers together, but weak enough not to tear the paper when it was removed. Fry saw that the new adhesive could help solve his bookmark problem. One morning, Fry put some of the adhesive on the edge of a piece of paper. Just as he hoped, it made a perfect bookmark.
A short time later, Fry realized that his new invention had even more uses than being a great bookmark. He came to this realization when he wrote a note on one of his new “bookmarks” and attached it to a report he was going to give to a colleague. Soon, co-workers were asking Fry for more sample of his invention so that they could use the new type of notes themselves.
Fry and some other people at 3M believed so much in the new product that they persuaded the company to give away thousands of the sticky pieces of paper for trial use. When some salespeople at 3M went to offices and showed workers just how helpful the new type of notes could be, they immediately received many orders. As more and more people discovered how useful Post-it Notes could be, the product took off.

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive (自我毁灭的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power to resist them.
According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.
Think back to the time you took your very first sip of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (诱惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.
Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (讽刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to some day develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.
These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.
1.What do most people think causes bad behavior?
A. Being forced by others. B. Not having enough will power.
C. Enjoying their first experiences. D. Following the examples of their friends.
2.The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.
A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes
B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers
C. self-control should be developed when one is young
D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations
3.In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.
A. without self-control, no one can succeed
B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results
C. applying self-control correctly is important
D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior
4.What does the passage mainly tells about ?
A. The Author’s First Sip of Beer B. Everyone Should Have Will Power
C. Will Power Benefits Us D. Dark Side of Self-control
A group of graduates, successful in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor.Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Before offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups---porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking and cheap, some exquisite and expensive---telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups. And then you began eyeing each other's cups.
Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us."
God brews the coffee, not the cups.Enjoy your coffee!
"The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the most of everything."
Live simply.Love generously.Care deeply.Speak kindly.Leave the rest to God.
1.Why did the professor offer his students coffee with varieties of cups?
A. To give his students many more choices.
B. To teach his students how to enjoy coffee.
C. To show the students his collection of cups.
D. To tell his students the right attitude to life
2.According to the professor, the happiest people are the ones who _____.
A. get the best type of coffee cups B. make the best of what they have
C. have a wide range of coffee cups D. care about social status and wealth
3.The best title for the passage would be _____.
A. God's Coffee B. The Pressure of Life
C. The Happiest People D. Professor's Coffee Cups
These are instructions for making invisible ink using baking soda.
Difficulty: | Easy |
Time required | A few minutes |
What you need | Baking soda Paper Water Light bulb Paintbrush Measuring cup Purple grape juice |
Here’s how: | There are at least two methods of using baking soda as invisible ink. Mix equal amounts of water and baking soda. Use a paintbrush to write a message onto white paper, using the baking soda solution (溶液) as “ink”. Allow the ink to dry. One way to read the message is to hold the paper up to a heat source, such as a light bulb. The baking soda will cause the writing in the paper to turn brown. The second way to read the message is to paint over the paper with purple grape juice. The message will appear in a different color. |
Tips: | If you are using the heating method, avoid igniting (点燃) the paper. Baking soda and grape juice react with each other in an acid-base (酸碱) reaction, producing a color change in the paper. Grape juice concentrate (浓缩物) results in a more visible color change than regular grape juice. |
1.______ is not needed for making invisible ink.
A. Baking soda B. Paper
C. Water D. Ink
2.What’s the function of the paintbrush?
A. To draw a picture. B. To write a message onto the white paper.
C. To allow the “ink” to appear. D. To help the“ink” dry.
3.Why will the message appear in a different color in the second way to read the message?
A. Because there is enough grape juice.
B. Because baking soda reacts with grape juice.
C. Because of the use of water.
D. Because of the special paper.
4.From the process, we can know that making invisible ink is ______.
A. very hard B. not difficult
C. a little difficult D. not easy
