Half of primary schools will adopt the traditional Chinese method of math teaching in a Government drive to stop British kids falling behind their Asian competitors.

Previous tests have shown the average math ability of 15-year-olds in Shanghai, China is three years more advanced and complex than that of 15-year-olds in the U.K. Under the Government’s new plans, children as young as five will have to practise sums and exercises, and must master each concept through repetition before moving to the next.

Nick Gibb, Minister of State for Schools announced that training would be provide for 8,000 primary school--half of the country’s total--to switch to the Shanghai “mastery” approach. “I am confident that the steps we are taking now will ensure young people are properly prepared for further study and the 21st-century workplace.” he said.

There are also some other voices. Critics complain that this “progressive” math-teaching style which focuses on practice and repetition is difficult to apply to real-life situations. They say that the reform would lead to confusion, and could even stop children from learning the basics and enjoying the subject.
