Have you ever heard of agritourism where...

Have you ever heard of agritourism where you can experience farm life? If not, Dr. Cindy Ayers-Elliott will tell you the real story of Foot Print Farms.

The original concept of building Foot Print Farms was simple. When Ayers-Elliott returned to her hometown after graduationshe didn' t have to look any further than her state' s alarming health statistics to find a mission. Everywhere she turned, there were reports of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. “The problem was already identified." explains Ayers-Elliott. “Too many Mississippians were seriously unhealthy and it didn’t take research to see that. And many of the state' s greatest health challenges could directly result from poor diet. ”

These daysFoot Print Farms, which started with a few raised beds of herbs and vegetables, is making fresh, naturally grown food. "When speaking of the key to my successthe co-op model works because we share the work and rewards” notes Ayers-Elliott. “ A perfect example is the Wingfield High School football team. To earn the money for equipment and other items, players committed to working five hours a week on the farmand by the end of the summer they had produced 1000 melons and the profits from their sales helped to buy weightsT-shirtssweat suits and pregame meals. But the lessons they learned about the rewards of hard work and working together to accomplish something were even more valuable products of their efforts. ”

"It' s a model that can easily be learned in other places and I' m looking forward to seeing some of our current partners do just that——to take what they have learned here and spin it off in other communities,"Ayers-Elliott remarks. She is now looking forward to developing an agritourism aspect to the farm, where visitors can experience farm life, learn new skills and take with them seeds of inspiration they can sow in their own communities when they return home.

Welcome to the 2017 UK Festival Awards

The UK Festival Awards & Conference is an opportunity to recognize the hard work, vision and creativity of the nation’s beloved festival industry.

Throughout the day of the event, the Conference invites numerous industry insiders(行家) to discuss the issues most relative to the sector, reviewing its immediate past and portending to the future. The evening’s Awards present a wide range of honors across categories that are decided via a combination of public voting and professional judgments. Since launching in 2004 it has evolved into a major event at The Roundhouse in London, giving the industry a chance to collectively celebrate and fondly reflect upon the achievements of the past year.

With a gourmet dinner, gala awards ceremony and after-show party, it attracts over 1,000 of the most influential people in the business.

Along with its sister events, the UK Festival Conference and the European Festival Awards, The UK Festival Awards & Conference is owned and produced by Festival Awards Ltd, an independent company founded in the UK.

Awards include Best Major, Medium-Sized and Small Festival, Best Family Festival, Best Overseas Festival, Best Use of New Technology, and of course – Best Toilets.

As the festival season is approaching, we thought it’d be a good time to release our free UK Festival Market Report for 2015 / 2016. We gathered the data in our annual census(人口普查)  undertaken in the preparation stage for last year’s UK Festival Awards. The latest UK Festival Market Report can be downloaded below.

Included in the Report is a bunch of related information about festivalgoers: where they’re from, how they like to purchase music, what they eat, their attitudes towards ticket prices, how receptive they are to different forms of advertising, why they go to festivals in the first place, where they sleep, and much more.

We hope you find the information useful.

As soon as a person dies, decomposition(分解) begins. And the first visitors arrive. “Within 5 to 15 minutes of death, flies or other insects begin to colonize the body.” says Rabi Musah, an organic chemist at the University at Albany.

She says different species turn up at different stages of decomposition. “So because of that, depending upon what entomological(昆虫学的) evidence you find, you can learn something about when the person died in terms of the timing of the death.”

Flies don't tend to stick around when disturbed by detectives. But they do leave behind eggs. The eggs are hard to tell apart by appearance alone, so specialists raise them until they hatch, a few weeks later—and they get a species ID and, with a little guesswork, a person's time of death.   But Musah has come up with a more time-saving approach: chemical analysis of the eggs. She and her team investigated that method by first harvesting flies with pig-liver traps hidden throughout New York City. They collected the trapped flies and then chemically analyzed their eggs. And it turns out each species of fly egg has a unique chemical fingerprint—enough to tell the eggs apart without raising the eggs to maturity. The study is in the journal Analytical Chemistry.

Musah and her colleague Jennifer Rosati are now testing the method on a real case. “And once we do that we will be publishing some case studies to illustrate(阐明) that this is a method that can be used, and hopefully eventually it's something that will stand up in court, and something that could speed up detective work—or help deal with a cold case.”

1.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “colonize” in paragraph 1?

A. look for B. fight over

C. carry away D. gather on

2.How can a specialist know a person’s time of death?

A. By researching the habitual nature of flies.

B. By relying on the entomological evidence.

C. By distinguishing the appearance of flies.

D. By discovering a new detective method.

3.What can we infer about Musah’s approach from the last paragraph?

A. Scientists have published studies about it.

B. It is bound to make every cold case solved.

C. It may help accelerate the detection of cases.

D. It will be published in Analytical Chemistry.

4.Where most probably can you see this article?

A. In a science fiction. B. In a newspaper.

C. In a medical paper. D. In a novel.
