Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to conquer (征服) Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally,in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two "Irelands". Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country.

In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. As a result of these problems, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851.

For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Today, many people still work on the land but more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the  cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace.

The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly, Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were "the greatest talkers since the Greeks".     Facial expressions carry meaning that is determined by situations and relationships. For example, in American culture (文化) the smile is in general an expression of pleasure. Yet it also has other uses. A woman’s smile at a police officer does not carry the same meaning as the smile she gives to a young child. A smile may show love or politeness. It can also hide true feelings. It often causes confusion (困惑) across cultures. For example, many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even improper. Yet many Americans smile freely at strangers in public places (although this is less common in big cities). Some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don’t smile enough. In Southeast Asian cultures, a smile is frequently used to cover painful feelings. Vietnamese people may tell a sad story but end the story with a smile.

Our faces show emotions (情感), but we should not attempt to "read" people from another culture as we would "read" someone from our own culture. The fact that members of one culture do not express their emotions as openly as do members of another does not mean that they do not experience emotions.

Rather, there are cultural differences in the amount of facial expressions permitted. For example, in public and in formal situations many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do. When with friends, Japanese and Americans seem to show their emotions similarly.

It is difficult to generalize about Americans and facial expressiveness because of personal and cultural differences in the United States. People from certain cultural backgrounds in the United States seem to be more facially expressive than others. The key is to try not to judge people whose ways of showing emotion are different. If we judge according to our own cultural habits, we may make the mistake of "reading" the other person incorrectly.

1.What does the smile usually mean in America?

A.Love. B.Politeness.

C.Joy. D.Thankfulness.

2.The author mentions the smile of the Vietnamese to prove that smile can ___ .

A.show friendliness to strangers

B.be used to hide true feelings

C.be used in the wrong places

D.show personal habits

3.What should we do before attempting(尝试) to "read" people?

A.Learn about their relations with others.

B.Understand their cultural backgrounds.

C.Find out about their past experience.

D.Figure out what they will do next.

4.What would be the best title for the test?

A.Cultural Differences

B.Smiles and Relationship

C.Facial Expressiveness

D.Habits and Emotions

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Some people doubt the accuracy and reliability of the facial recognition technology. They need notbecause the technology is highly advanced. It can distinguish a human face with or without glasses. Tests show it has a precision rate of more than 99 percent.

Some argue that the fingerprint or iris (虹膜) recognition system is perhaps more accurate than the facial recognition system. Truebut for iris recognitiona person has to hold his or her head still and look at the camerawhich is timeconsuming and thus not suitable for public spaces such as subway stations. And the fingerprint recognition system is not so secureas some people can cheat the system by copying and using the fingerprints of other people to enter or exit a station.

Facial recognition is a rather mature system. A facial recognition system collects people’s facial images from different anglesinstead of oneand therefore minimizes the chance of cheating. Actuallyit is already being applied in many fields such as unlocking smartphones and computers. Besidesfacial recognition technology can also help the police to hunt escaped criminals in public spaces.

Howeverthe law says a citizen’s photo should not be collected for commercial use without his/her permission. To avoid such legal riskssome measures should be taken before the collection of passenger information. Firstcompanies must ensure the collected facial images are only for public convenienceand will never be used for other commercial purposessuch as advertisements. Secondcompanies must take necessary measures to make sure not even a single one is leaked or sold to any third party without the passenger’s permission. Generallyadvanced technologies are welcome to be used in public spacesbut people’s rights must be respectedat least to avoid legal risks.
