The Four People You Don’t Want to Sit Next to on a Plane
Let me begin by promising you that I am not an angry person. I would actually vow that I am inherently happy and all-around quite friendly and nice. But one thing that really grinds my gears, is being seated next to a nightmare neighbor on an airplane.
1.
Perhaps you normally like them, but when you are sitting next to them on a plane it’s a different thing. They usually spend all the flight moving around and dropping their toys on the floor, and when they’re drinking their orange juice it ends up on your trousers. 2.. So you can’t have the little sleep that you were planning.
Conversation makers
You recognize this type as soon as you sit down. They immediately start talking about the plane, or the weather, or they ask you a personal question. It’s very difficult not to talk to these people. 3..
Nervous fliers
These are the people with white faces who sit down and immediately ask for something to drink. Every five minutes they call a flight attendant to ask if there are any problems with the plane. 4.. The best thing to do is to pretend to sleep.
Space invaders
5.. But they have a terrible habit of taking up all their room, and some of your room too. They usually sit so that you can’t move, with their arms and legs in your space.
A. Naughty kids
B. Well-behaved parents
C. They also tell you about air crash
D. Some people want to talk all the time
E. The people are not necessarily very large
F. Then they decide they want to have fun with you
G. You’ll probably have to keep talking until the plane lands

Many studies have hinted(暗示) that alcohol, in moderation, can do a heart good. But new research suggests that moderate drinkers are no more likely than nondrinkers to have clear arteries(动脉).
The scientists looked at almost 2,000 patients who underwent CT test. Overall, there was no association between people’s drinking habits and their heart diseases. Researchers said an advantage of the new study is that it used objective measurements.
“No prior studies have assessed the relationship between alcohol consumption and the presence of heart disease,” said lead researcher Dr Julia Karady. “We could not find any relation between the presence of heart disease and alcohol consumption,” Karady said. At the same time, she added, there was no evidence that heavier drinking raised the risk of heart disease.
However, groups like the American Heart Association(AHA) warn against excessive drinking, because it can raise blood pressure and contribute to heart failure and other problems.
In general, “moderate” is defined as no more than one glass of alcohol a day for women, and no more than two a day for men. But those studies do not prove that alcohol, itself, protects the heart—in large part because alcohol also carries risks.
1.What is the advantage of the new study?
A.The scientists looked at almost 2,000 patients who underwent CT test.

B.Because there is some evidence that it will raise the risk of death.
C.Because it can make you die immediately.
D.Because it will lead to blindness.
3.What is “moderate” defined in the text?
A.No more than one glass of alcohol a day.
B.No more than two glasses of alcohol a day.
C.No more than three glasses of alcohol a day.
D.No more than one glass of alcohol a day for women, and no more than two a day for men.
When the weather’s hot, do you enjoy a glass of Brad’s Drink while watching your TV made by Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering, and surfing the web using a search engine called BackRub? No? Neither do I. That’s because all these companies have changed their names.
Brad’s Drink is now Pepsi. The mouthful that was Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering has become, simply, Sony. And BackRub is now known as Google. Though I must admit, the idea of a back massage does sound good right now!
Joking aside, choosing the right name for your start-up is a serious matter. Think of the case of a small Canadian company called Research in Motion, who in 1998 had just developed a high-tech mobile phone that could send emails.
They were torn between names like MegaMail and ProMail. Then they sought the help of consulting firm Lexicon, who specialize in brand names. They had other ideas. They brainstormed words connected to enjoyment and freshness. Someone said.
Lexicon’s boss added two capital letters, and there you have it: BlackBerry was born. Since then it has sold over 33 million handsets to customers around the world. Would it have sold as well if it was called MegaMail? Who knows?
Recently, BlackBerry sales have been overtaken by Android phones and Apple’s iPhone. Lexicon’s founder David Placek is a big fan of simple brand names like those Apple chooses: the iPhone. They l0ok a household word and by putting one letter in font of it, it ends up being game changing.
So, for all you entrepreneurs(企业家)out there, make sure you allow time to develop a catchy and memorable name. Think about what makes your company different. What’s your USP (独特的销售主张) ? Maybe you can reflect that in your name.
What about you? What would you call a company if you had one?
1.Which of the following is the original name of BlackBerry?
A.Brad’s Drink.
B.Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering.
C.BackRub.
D.MegaMail and ProMail.
2.What is Lexicon?
A.A consulting company.
B.A handset company.
C.A drink company.
D.A telecommunication company.
3.What is Lexicon good at?
A.Giving proper names to persons.
B.Giving proper names to a brand.
C.Making Android phones.
D.Making its company different.
