The art collection of Mr. Xie Yanshen is a product of 30 years’ worth of traveling and careful selection. It consists of nearly 10,000 pieces of art from 40 of the 54 countries in Africa. There are sculptures, statues, masks, as well as objects for daily use. The artworks were collected by Mr. Xie Yanshen on his travels during the past 30 years. Coming from all over the continent, they naturally have different styles and meanings. Hundreds of the pieces were donated to the National Museum of China in 2012. Through them, the museum hopes to deepen Chinese people’s understanding of African art forms. The museum also wants to encourage cultural exchanges between China and Africa, as well as the development of ties between the two regions. Mr. Xie Yanshen has also founded the International Museum in Lomé, Togo of West Africa. Many of his art pieces are on display for the large number of tourists who visit to experience African art and culture every year.
