A recent study confirms that several turtle species(海龟种类) have either greatly dropped or disappeared from various sections of the Australian Murray River. “The problem is that the long life of turtles makes people unable to sense the seriousness of the situation,” says Ricky Spencer, a co-author of the study, which was published in February in Scientific Reports. “It’s human nature that only when something is gone do we start missing it.”

Spencer and his workmates recorded the population of three once common turtle species at 52 sites along the southern areas of the river. The researchers inferred the species’ population sizes from the number of individuals they caught in a given amount of time. They found the turtles have disappeared in places where they were previously rich, and most of the individuals they managed to catch elsewhere were large—and likely old—adults. Spencer and his workmates blame the losses on continuing nest predation(捕食) by foxes, accompanied by other problems, including a worse and worse environment and serious drought(干旱) in the 2000s.

“We have known about the sudden sharp drop of the population of the turtles for tens of years, and although media have covered a lot about the ‘trouble of our rivers’, nothing has been done,” says Rick Shine from Macquarie University in Sydney. “This paper is a wake-up call that unless we begin to do something about turtle protection, we may lose an attractive part of our native creatures.”

The turtles could recover quickly if action is taken to protect nests from foxes and bring back living areas, Spencer notes. But governments tend to respond only when losses reach crisis levels, and the Murray River species currently lack the government’s protection, he says. He and his workmates have a solution, however. “Our next step is to start designing community protection efforts for common turtle species,” he explains, “so people can actually do things without having to wait for the government’s support.”

(斯宾塞和他的同事们将这些损失归咎于狐狸对巢穴的持续捕食,以及其他问题,包括2000年以来越来越糟糕的环境和严重的干旱)”可知,海龟面临的最大危机是狐狸的捕食。故选A项。 3.推理判断题。根据文章第三段末句内容“This paper is a wake-up call that unless we begin to do something about turtle protection, we may lose an attractive part of our native creatures.(这篇论文给我们敲响了警钟,除非我们开始采取措施保护海龟,否则我们可能会失去本土生物中有吸引力的部分)”可知, Rick Shine认为这是一种警钟。故选B项。 4.细节理解题。根据文章末段末尾内容:“Our next step is to start designing community protection efforts for common turtle species,”he explains, “so people can actually do things without having to wait for the government’s support.”(“我们的下一步是开始为普通的海龟物种设计社区保护措施,”他解释说,“这样人们就可以不需要等待政府的支持就可以做事情了”)”可知,社区有可能下一步采取措施保护海龟。C项“Community efforts to protect turtles will start soon.( 社区保护海龟的工作将很快开始)”论述正确。故选C项。

I am a Canadian artist living in Victoria. My work focuses on peace. My art helps me find answers, or at least deal with some of the worrying realities of the modern day.

My trips into Baghdad standing for peace caused huge stress to my family and me. It took a few years before I was able to come to accept that whole experience and work out how to continue to work as an artist. I put my energy into creating natural art facilities that awoke a sense of peace in myself and others. I set up my first project in a large field, using a simple mother and child design. I later did two similar, small works, one in Scotland and the other in Baghdad.

I wanted to create something more permanent(永恒的), however, and so I created the Peace Image in Hudson’s Hope. It can’t be seen very well on the ground these days, because the locals just loved riding over the large piles of dirt. I don’t mind that at all. The Peace Image still turns up well from the air and on Google maps though.

For more than 50 years now, I’ve felt pleased to be able to express myself through my art. In the autumn of 2013, I was encouraged to lead the creation of a Peace Garden art project at Woodwynn Farms in Central Saanich. After everything we had been through, it was such a gift to work closely with my wife, Elizabeth Wellburn, a talented artist. It was and still is a labour of love.

1.What made the author suffer from great pressure?

A.His lack of enough money. B.Some worrying realities.

C.The failure of his first project. D.His strong support of peace.

2.Why did the author create the Peace Image?

A.To produce a more lasting thing. B.To raise people’s awareness of peace.

C.To make people remember him. D.To satisfy local people’s requirement.

3.How does the author feel about his own artistic works?

A.Doubtful. B.Discouraged.

C.Satisfied. D.Confident.

4.What is a suitable title for the text?

A.An Artist Concentrating on Peace Design

B.The Life Story of a Canadian Artist

C.Artistic Works Meaning a Labour of Love

D.An Unforgettable Experience

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

A class pet can be an invaluable experience for elementary school children. The pet can teach responsibility, build a connection to the classroom, serve as a motivator, and be something for the children to love. If the teacher is willing to take on the added responsibility of caring for an animal in addition to all of the children in the classroom, a class pet can be a wonderful addition to a class.

Many factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing a class pet. It cannot be too big, as classrooms generally have limited space. Cost should also be considered since the teacher will likely have to pay for the pet, its food and its habitat. It must also be somewhat hardy (耐寒的). Each particular type of animal has its advantages and disadvantages, and a teacher must weigh these and make a decision about which one is right for his or her class.

Birds are physically more delicate (娇养) than many other animals. They will not survive in drafts (气流) and need a somewhat regulated temperature in their environment. Many birds are quite social and do best with other birds or when being handled routinely by people who can be appropriate with them. Young children are not likely to have the skill to handle a bird without harming it, making it a poor choice for a class pet.

Some reptiles are beautiful to look at but are delicate, afraid of cold, light sensitivity or poisonous and shouldn’t be handled by children. Others are more hardy but require expensive habitats. Most snakes eat rats and mice, which may be a frightening thing for small children to witness.

A hardy fish, such as a betta, is a good low-cost option for a class pet. They are obviously not huggable or able to be caught by children. Besides, they are inexpensive, have relatively long life spans, and can be kept in a simple fish bowl.
