Put on new set of gasses for a new view
Today I visited San Francisco’s modern-art museum. I was there to see a new exhibit about spaceflight.1.I like to “visit” this particular painting every time I go to the museum not only because it evokes(唤起)strong feelings, but because I always find something new.
There's real pleasure to be found in revisiting a museum replaying a game or rewatching a movie. Some of that enjoyment comes from the feeling of familiarity of course.2..There’s always plenty more to see, hear, taste, smell, feel, of understand the second or third time around. But how do you discover the exciting new thing in the familiar?
One way is approaching whatever task is at hand by searching for the things that you didn't see in the first time around. First, recognize that everything is always changing.3.Second, remove judgment from the experience, if possible, and just observe what's new. For example, look for the ways in which a change in your neighborhood is interesting or exciting.
4.That could mean removing sugar, coffee, a certain kind of media from your life for a specified time. Once the break is over, that same thing will have more of its former interest or excitement.5.So is true that novelty is fun, but given enough of a break in between, repeated experiences regain that initial excitement.
A. Repeated experiences like this are valuable.
B. Visiting a new country brings fresh experience.
C. Coffee will never taste better if you quit it for a month.
D. But the piece of art that made me cry was a familiar one.
E. But it also comes from noticing new things in what is so familiar.
F. So the second experience is never exactly the same as the first one.
G. Another way is changing your routine and taking a break of some kind.
Many people often find themselves waking up in the middle of the night, unusually awake and excited. 1. . That's really frustrating. However, there is no need to worry. Here are some effective ways to help you fall asleep again.
Remain in bed. For you to fall asleep, your heart rate needs to slow down. When you get up, your heart rate goes up. So, avoid going to the bathroom during the night if you can. Do not eat too little or too much for dinner. Do not drink and fill your bladder (膀胱)before bed. 2. . It may make you fall asleep faster, but it may also disrupt
your sleep later in the night.
Stay in the dark. When you cannot sleep, LED lights on printers and cable boxes may be the reason. The same is true for light streaming in through cracks in curtains. 3.. You should cover lights with tape and wear a sleep mask. A popular choice has deep eye cups so your eyes can open and shut while you wear them.
Quiet your mind. Try ways to relax, such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness exercises. 4. . The point is to keep your brain busy with something that is not demanding and is relaxing.
5. . If your wake-up time is 6:30 a.m. and your clock reads 3:00 a.m., do not think Oh no! I have only three hours left! Instead, say to yourself Oh great! I have three more hours to sleep!
You have a problem if you wake three times a week for more than three months. It may affect your quality of life. You need to find a sleep expert who can help identify the cause and fix it.
A. Think in a positive way.
B. Maintain a calm attitude.
C. They may keep you awake.
D. Most importantly, avoid alcohol in the evening.
E. You can do simple math problems in your head.
F. Getting up to do some mild exercise is also helpful.
G. Tossing and turning in bed, they are unable to fall asleep.
How Many Cups of Coffee per Day Are Too Many?
From cappuccinos to cold brew, coffee is a must-have to start the day for many people. 1. However, a new study suggests too much coffee can be harmful.
This is what a recent study shows. 2. A University of South Australia study led by Elian Hypponen suggests a couple of cups to start your day probably won’t hurt — and may even be good for you. But drinking six or more cups of coffee a day can increase your risk of heart disease by up to 22%, the researchers found. A cup was defined as eight ounces of coffee.
Knowing the limits of what's good for us and what's not is necessary. 3. About one in four deaths in the United States is due to heart disease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. That's why Elian set out to discover how much caffeine causes high blood pressure. 4.
Elian says her findings suggest that sipping two to three cups per day is pretty safe and possibly beneficial. She also notes that if you're generally healthy, lots of evidence suggests that four cups per day shouldn't be harmful.
5. Even though the research says five cups of coffee is permissible, each person should know his or her own limit. If we begin having difficulty sleeping or feeling nervous, we might have reached our limit for the day.
A. Drink no more than six cups per day.
B. Over the limits and our health will pay for it.
C. Coffee is the most popular drink in the world.
D. But of course, don't forget to listen to our body.
E. The relation between them is quite complicated.
F. As we know, it is a key heart disease risk factor.
G. It sets you off on an energetic morning and prepares you for a busy day.
Our society is becoming increasingly overweight. 1. Similar to humans, overweight pets have a much higher risk of health problems. Dr. Katrina Warren shares her expert advice on the issues, causes and treatments for overweight pets.
Recent estimates suggest over a third of overweight pets are suffering from health problems. Diabetes (糖尿病) and diseases related to heart top the list of weight-related disease. To put it simply, weight issues occur when pets consume more kilojoules (千焦) than they use. Owners are a key part of the problem. 2.
3. Working out regularly helps keep pets in shape. As pets no longer need to hunt for their food, they typically enjoy a comfortable lifestyle, lazing around indoors, thus gaining weight easily. What’s more, food should always be adjusted to a pet’s energy requirements. 4. They assume the pet will control its own intake. So it’s easy to fall into the trap of feeding your pet whenever it begs for food.
Fortunately, there are plenty of diet and lifestyle changes to help your pets maintain a healthy weight. For example, pets will benefit from more exercise in their daily life, like eating food. Don’t put food in their bowls. 5. Meanwhile, you can also consult experts about guidance for a healthy diet.
Anyway, provide them with an appropriate diet and proper amounts of exercise, and you may have healthy pets.
A. They’re related to the diet.
B. So are our lovely friends — pets.
C. Another contributing factor is lack of exercise.
D. Try encouraging the pets to exercise step by step.
E. Yet many owners provide constant access to food.
F. They ultimately decide what and how much the pets eat.
G. Rather, spread some food around your house so your pets must find it.
Almost 200 graduate students and postdoctoral (博 士后) researchers gathered April 21 for a career-development event at the annual meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology where they learned about varieties of scientific careers, participated in skill-building workshops and networked with peers and speakers. The entire event was full of useful information1.
Your career path is less like a ladder and more like a jungle gym.
We're all programmed to see our career path as a series of linear (直线型) steps up to a final goal — undergraduate, graduate, post doctor, forever job — but this rarely happens.2.Don't be afraid to take a risk when opportunities present themselves if they will help you build your unique career.
Create a “skills toolbox" and use it.
The skills you develop as a trainee help you stand out in the job market. When you're in the lab, talk to your colleagues about their experiments. Challenge yourself to learn new techniques both in and out of your field. Work on developing critical thinking skills, which will help you however your career evolves.
And acquire skills outside the lab. Explore entrepreneurship, science writing and communication, policy, outreach, education, even art — whatever resonates with you. 3.
Communication skills are critical to success. Less jargon (行话),more passion.
Science is a language most people don't speak fluently. When communicating with diverse audiences, think of yourself as a translator. Eliminate jargon and create analogies (类推) to make your research accessible. Work on making your science story relevant to the audience, which may mean that you don't share every piece of data you have collected. Most importantly, practice.
Training courses like the ASBMB's Art of Science Communication are available to help you develop these skills.
4.
In professional interactions, be confident and remember that your skills and knowledge got you where you are today. Don't be frightened by people who question what you know, and don't let negative experiences diminish your self confidence.
Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. You don't need to see the entire staircase to take the next step.
With these words in mind, explore your options, network and talk to people in fields that interest you. Don't know where to start? Start with videos under the heading "Career Paths” at asbmb.org and the career section of the ASBMB Today website. 5. . For the price of a cup of coffee, you can get started on the path to career success.
A. Don't be afraid of new challenges.
B. Work on believing that you belong in the room.
C. Below are five tips for career success that struck me.
D. This will help build you into a well-rounded candidate.
E. You may move sideways in your career or even take a step or two back before moving up the ladder again.
F. Once you find a job that interests you, identify people in the field and ask for informational interviews.
G. Imposter (冒名顶替者)syndrome is a reality for many people in the sciences, especially those from underrepresented groups.
How to Avoid the Worst Cold-Weather Packing Mistakes
Yes, you can definitely blame winter clothes for your overstuffed(塞得过满的)suitcase. After all, warm clothing takes up a lot more room than summer T-shirts and shorts. To make matters worse, you’ve got to pack for overheated restaurants and freezing outdoor conditions. 1. . Here are some winter-packing mistakes we learned the hard way, and tips you need.
2.
Your shoes face a big challenge in the winter. They need to be: insulated, waterproof, and warm; provide great traction in case of ice; be able to withstand salt; and be comfortable to walk in. So, your sneakers aren't going to cut it. Just remember to wear your heavier snow boots on the plane; otherwise, they'll take up half your suitcase space.
Packing the wrong materials
3., It absorbs moisture and sweat, which will make you cold and keep you freezing. You can replace cotton with wool, as wool is naturally odor-resistant and breathable.
Leaving behind sunglasses
Since you're not headed to the beach, you might forget to pack your sunglasses. The sun can shine brightly on freezing days too tough, so be able to pack yours. 4..
Not bringing medicine
Cold and flu cases rise during the winter, and while you definitely don't plan on getting sick while traveling, you should be prepared in case it does happen. Make sure you've packed medication for upset stomach, fever relief, body aches, and congestion, 5.. Just get travel-sized versions of you go-to drugs.
A. But we're here to help
B. Choosing the right shoes
C. Wearing the wrong shoes
D. Cotton is a terrible choice for the winter
E. Better be a pair which is easy to pack and hard to break
F. You don't have to travel with the whole medicine chest though
G. Also throw some sunscreen in there as you can get sunburned in winter
