Before I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are, the more powerful the joke will be.

I was attending a standup comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their heads off. The main reason why those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn't only funny, but it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support they got.

The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren't jealous of him.

In short, we don't laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage you from making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person's emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.

A.Only good jokes make people laugh.

3.What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?

A.Annoy. B.Blame.

C.Look down on. D.Make up to.

4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

C. D.

I was born and raised in England in a culture where privacy and “keeping yourself to yourself” were valued traditions. Speaking to strangers was not encouraged. People were most hospitable(好客的) and friendly—but only once they had been introduced to new people.

However, I have been lucky enough to spend some time in both Italy and the US, where I found traditions of hospitality and politeness to be very different.

I experienced Italian hospitality firsthand on a crowded railway carriage travelling, one afternoon, from Genoa to Florence. Sinking gratefully into an empty seat, I was berated(斥责) in rapid Italian by a gentleman who was returning to this seatit had not been “spare” after all. I apologized in English, and got up to allow him back into the seat. The gentleman obviously had no understanding of the English language, but he, too, realized my genuine mistake. He smiled and gestured for me to remain in the seat, and he himself remained standing in the corridor for the remainder of the journey. The other occupants of the carriage smiled and nodded at me and made me feel quite welcome amongst them. I feel that if this had been in England, a foreigner who made a mistake would not always be so kindly treated.

Transport also featured in the differences I noticed between English and American culture. I flew to New York on a plane with mainly English passengers. We sat together in near silence. Nobody spoke to me nor, as I expected, to anyone else they did not know. They felt it was not polite to intrude on someone else's privacy. However, when I travelled across the United States, whether by plane or Greyhound bus, I was never short of conversation. Conversation was going on all around me and whoever sat next to me was happy to introduce themselves and ask me about myself. They obviously felt it would have been rude not to speak to another person, whether they were strangers or not.

1.What do we know about the occupants of the carriage when the author was travelling in Italy?

A.They all laughed at the author for his mistake.

B.They would not bear a mistake like the author's in public.

C.They were all on the side of the gentleman.

D.They all showed their understanding of the author's mistake.

2.The author probably believes the Italian people are________.

A.cold B.rude

C.hospitable D.helpful

3.According to the last paragraph, English passengers sat in near silence because________.

A.they were all strangers to each other

B.they were too tired to speak

C.privacy was a valued tradition in England

D.everybody had their own share of privacy

4.The purpose of the author is to tell us ________.

A.his travelling experience

B.cultural differences to show hospitality and politeness

C.the culture shock he experienced in Italy and the US

D.how to adapt ourselves to a new culture

It was the middle of third grade and I was not sure what had got into me. I lied about many things ---I lied that I had eaten all my dinner, when in fact I buried it in the trash can, I lied that I had made my bed, when clearly I had not. My lies were not hurting anyone, but for some reason I felt the need to tell lies on an impulse (冲动 )that didn't feel like my own. I was labeled a liar.

One day my sisters and I were invited to spend the weekend with my aunt we all loved it. She spoiled us with her time. And she was an amazing artist. She had cool pencilserasers and other supplies that any young girl would love to get her hands on. Then it happened ...  someone took one of Aunt Kim's good art erasers and rubbed it across the entire top of the TV. The eraser ruined the shiny finish on the TV’s casing. All the three of us were called into the TV room and asked to admit. Nobody did! Aunt Kim told us how disappointed she was.

The next thing I knew was that she was on the phone with my parents and they were on their way to picking me up. It had to be me! I was the liar. I argued, but no one listened. And then before dinner there was a knock at the front door! Aunt Kim was standing there. It turned out my younger sister finally felt guilty! She admitted that she was the one who rubbed the eraser on the TV. I was invited back!

A lie may take care of the present, but it has no future. No matter how big or small your lies are, once you are labeled a liar, earning trust takes a lot of work and time.

1.Why does the author tell lies?

A.She just does that out of a strong desire.

B.She can find pleasure in telling a lie.

C.She is afraid to admit her mistakes.

D.She likes to play tricks on others.

2.What may make Aunt Kim disappointed most?

A.The TV’s finish was ruined. B.The author told a lie again.

C.Nobody admitted the mistake. D.The erasers were totally useless.

3.What’s the reaction of the author’s parents and aunt to the accident?

A.They felt puzzled about who did it.

B.None of them blamed the three girls.

C.They gave the author a chance to admit.

D.They believed it was done by the author.

4.What lesson did the author learn?

A.A bad beginning makes a bad ending.

B.A liar pays a lot to win trust again.

C.Lies can never change the fact.

D.An honest man will speak out.
