For businesses to develop, every business leader needs to create a workplace that is not only productive, but enjoyable too. Here are some ways to encourage workers to work harder and also keep them happy.

1. If you want to keep your workers on track, you’ll need to provide a space where they can relax from stressful work for a while. This can be in the form of a game room, or a sofa where workers can leave their desks for a short time to talk with colleagues and relax.

Make them feel valued.2. Do not let them feel they are just someone who turns up, gets their work done and leaves at the end of the day. An easy way to do this is ask for their feedback (反馈) at company meetings.

Give them more responsibilities. Having your workers do the same tasks day in day out is a productivity killer. So provide them with new tasks that allow them to step outside of their comfort zone.3.

Reward them. Let’s face it! Everyone wants some kinds of rewards when working for a company.4. You don’t necessarily have to increase someone’s pay to encourage them — just make sure you provide enough encouragement so that you keep top talent.

Be straightforward. If you let your workers stay in the dark about the goings-on of your business, they’ll feel being kept out.5. Always be straightforward with your workers and let them know about any trying times the company faces.

A. Listen to their needs.

B. Create a welcoming environment.

C. It can be as simple as a free lunch or a gift card.

D. Set an example to your workers by working hard.

E. In this way they will increasingly believe in their abilities.

F. So keeping open communication is very important for a good team.

G. Encourage workers, making them feel they are important to you.

There’s a lot we know about eggs: they are great for breakfast and you can cook them in different ways. One topic of debate, however, is why brown chicken eggs usually cost more than white ones. According to Sharman Hickman, the director of Community Outreach and Education for Hickman’s Family Farms, genetics (基因学) not nutrition determines the eggshell color and thus the egg’s price.

The chicken breed (品种) and their genetics decide whether or not hens have pigment (色素 ) genes, which coat the egg and result in a colored shell during the egg-laying process. Although all eggs start out white in color, shell color can range from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds, Hickman adds. Breeds such as the Leghorn chicken lay white eggs, while the Orpington lays brown eggs and the Ameraucana produces blue eggs.

Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is the most efficient egg-laying hen, making it a popular choice for farmers. Hens that produce colored eggshells, however, tend to be larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted layer. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.

Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently, it’s impossible to know

their nutritional make-up from the shell color alone, according to Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” she says. “But it’s important for people to know that the color of the eggshell has nothing to do with the egg’s nutrient content or shell thickness.”

What does affect the nutrient content is the specific diet the hen is on, according to Malkani. For example, hens fed with a diet with omega-3s and vitamin D produce eggs that are higher in those specific nutrients. No matter what your preference is, don’t judge an egg by its shell color.

1.Which of the following is one of the arguments about eggs?

A.Which eggs are difficult to break.

B.How eggs can be cooked healthily.

C.Why colored eggs are more expensive.

D.What the best time to eat eggs should be.

2.What makes the eggshell color different?

A.The hen’s breed. B.The size of the hen.

C.The color of the eggs inside. D.The length of the laying process.

3.Why do farmers love the Leghorn breed more?

A.They lay brown eggs. B.Their eggs are larger.

C.Their eggs sell better. D.They are productive.

4.What can we learn from Malkani’s words in the last paragraph?

A.It takes efforts to test eggs’ nutrition.

B.It’s meaningless to study an eggs color.

C.Personal preference matters a lot in choice-making.

D.An egg’s nutrition is closely related to the hen’s feed.

I developed postpartum depression (PPD) (产后抑郁症) after giving birth to my first son. Actually I started feeling bad before I even had my son. The night I arrived home after giving birth, I had my first panic attack. I doubted I was having a slight heart attack.  The next day,  a public health nurse visited our home to see if everything was fine with me. She reassured me that I didn’t have a heart problem, and informed me that it was likely a panic attack. The nurse visit was part of a program that provided support for new moms. Sadly, it didn’t include any information on PPD.

By my six-week postpartum checkup, I knew something was wrong. I was having difficulty falling asleep and I felt like I was slowly going crazy. Panic attacks were more frequent. I talked with my obstetrician (产科医师), but unfortunately, she was not trained to recognize or cure PPD. Now I didn’t know whom to turn to for help.

I told my situation to my mom and my husband but they didn’t understand what I was really experiencing. They figured that being a new parent was tough for anyone, so feeling a little down after giving birth — “baby blues” — was just normal and not necessarily a sign of depression. But my cousin, also a new mom, knew me well, and she could see that something was wrong.

With my cousin’s encouragement, I went to see my family doctor and I was finally diagnosed (被诊断为) with PPD. I started taking medication, and began to feel better. Eventually, I rehabilitated, feeling like my old self again.

It is common for new moms to get the “baby blues” mixed up with PPD. I do think more attention should be drawn to the latter. After all, a new research finds that about 1 in 7 new mothers will be seriously troubled by PPD.

1.Why did the nurse visit the author?

A.To care for her baby. B.To cure her of her heart disease.

C.To help check her condition. D.To offer her information on PPD.

2.After talking with her obstetrician, what did the author realize?

A.She was really suffering from PPD.

B.Her obstetrician couldn’t really help her.

C.She should have received training in PPD.

D.Her obstetrician didn’t really care about her.

3.What does the underlined word “rehabilitated” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A.recovered. B.succeeded.

C.resigned. D.returned.

4.What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?

A.To tell about her suffering “baby blues”.

B.To express her ideas about giving birth.

C.To call for attention to postpartum depression.

D.To show the importance of family to new moms.

A ship that sank off the coast of California decades ago was recently reconstructed in detail. The 3D digital model even included hundreds of sponges (海绵动物) that have gathered on the ship’s surface since it sank.

Named American Heritage, the supply ship sank in Santa Monica Bay on May 4, 1995, and for decades its exact location was unknown. Researchers with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) spotted a strange shape in that area in 2008. But it wasn’t until May 2018 that MBARI scientists identified its exact location and mapped the site in detail, showing what appeared to be a shipwreck (失事船只).

Even then, the identity of the shipwreck was uncertain. Yet another MBARI team revisited the location to do further exploration. They sent remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and took photos of the damaged ship. Though it was covered with deep-sea sponges and other animals, the scientists were able to spot letters spelling out its name, confirming that the shipwreck was American Heritage.

As one of the MBARI scientists who found American Heritage, chief ROV pilot Knute Brekke had worked on the ship before. And he was on duty with the diving company American Pacific Marine — the owner of American Heritage — the night the ship began taking in water and eventually sank.

MBARI spokesperson Kim Fulton -Bennett said to Live Science about the discovery, “The model is not complete, as floating ropes and poor visibility kept the pilots from getting too close to the wreck. But the 3D reconstruction is detailed enough to show that American Heritage is now home to thousands of sponges. Shipwrecks often turn into the shelter for diverse communities of ocean life.”

1.What is the main idea of the text?

A.A valuable treasure was discovered.

B.Special sponges were found under sea.

C.3D model reconstructed a sunken ship.

D.A sunken ship was gotten out of water.

2.Which is the right order of the following events?

Something strange was found in the area.

ROVs were sent under sea to take photos.

A ship sank in Santa Monica Bay.

The identity of the ship was confirmed.

Scientists tried to locate the shipwreck.

A.②③⑤④① B.③①⑤②④

C.⑤③①④② D.④③①②⑤

3.What can we learn about Knute Brekke?

A.He was familiar with the sunken ship.

B.He was in charge of a diving company.

C.He was responsible for the rescue work.

D.He was the first one to witness the accident.

4.What’s Kim Fulton-Bennett’s attitude towards the 3D model?

A.Critical. B.Doubtful. C.Amazed. D.Objective.
