Living life to its fullest On the night ...

Living life to its fullest

On the night of August 24, 2001, everything changed when my friend's car hit a wall with me inside. I lost most of my right leg, and I was left bleeding with several broken bones. At the hospital, although my body was weak, my mind was still very clear. I just kept telling myself to hold on. A week later, I made a deal with the doctors that once I could roll onto my side, I could leave. Two weeks later, I was allowed to go home.

Although I left the hospital, the fight was far from over. My left knee was badly injured, which resulted in different operations over the next few years.

And soon, more of my right leg had to be removed. This made it harder to wear my false leg, so I donated it to a nurse who couldn't afford one for herself. The joy of being able to provide this gift for someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself.

People often tell me they're proud of me for staying strong. But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest. Now, I may not be able to do things the way everybody else does them, but still, I always find a way to do them. I soon settled into everyday life again, until one day I realized I wasn't living my life as fully as I wanted to.

After 13 years of thinking that I was confident, I had an unfamiliar feeling sweep over me. For the first time in my life, I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me.

In 2014, I even started modeling. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine and say, “Wow, she's beautiful, and she only has one leg. I could do that too someday, even though I have a disability.” My dream is simple: to inspire every man, woman, and child into knowing and believing that they are beautiful just the way they are.

1.How did the author feel after the car accident?

A.She complained that life was unfair to her.

B.She was unable to accept the loss of her leg.

A.She was able to offer help to others.

B.She could wear her false leg again.

C.She had lived her life to the fullest.

D.She could do everyday things the same as everybody else.

3.Why did the author begin modeling in 2014?

A.She wanted to be a famous magazine star.

B.She wanted to encourage others to be confident about themselves.

But in my mind, staying strong has always been my only choice. So, on the day I left the hospital, I made a promise to myself to always live life to the fullest. The joy of being able to provide this gift to someone else was greater than the happiness I felt on any day I was able to wear it myself. 故选A。 3. I was not only confident but I wanted to help those around me. My dream is that one day a little girl will see me in a magazine可知,作者的梦想是有一天小女孩能够在杂志上看到她,从而激励身有残疾的小女孩。

Slowly but surely, we’re moving closer and closer to 5G world. From smart-home security to self-driving cars, all the internet-connected devices in your life will be able to talk to each other at lightning-fast speeds with reduced delay, Objectively speaking, the fastest 4G download speeds in the U. S. top out at an average of 19.42 Mbps. But by comparison 5G promises gigabit (千兆) speeds.

“5G is one of those signs, along with artificial intelligence, of this coming data age,” said Steve Koenig, senior director of market research for the Consumer Technology Association. “The self-driving vehicle is a great emblem of this data age, and that is to say, it is a sign of time, because with one single task, driving, you have massive amounts of data coming from the vehicle itself, and a variety of sensors are collecting a lot of information to model its environment as it moves. It’s pulling in data from other vehicles about road conditions down the lane. It could be weather information, but also connected infrastructure (基础设施) construction. There’s lots of data behind that task, which is why we need high speed.

Augmented reality glasses and virtual headset haven’t yet broken the mainstream, but tech companies are joyfully betting that these devices will eventually replace our smartphones. With 5G, that could actually happen. This is notable because companies such as Apple are reportedly developing AR glasses to assist — or perhaps even replace — smartphones.

Ericsson stated at February’s Mobile World Congress how smart glasses could become faster and lighter with a 5G connection, because instead of being weighed down with components, the glasses could rely on hardware for processing power.

But don’t get too excited. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the meantime, including various trials to make sure the radios play nicely with hardware and infrastructure construction so 5G isn’t concentrated only in big cities.

1.What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 1?

A.The lighting-fast speed of 5G.

B.The expectation of 5G world.

C.The difference between 4G and 5G.

D.The internet-connected devices in our life.

2.What does the underlined word “emblem” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.Exhibition. B.Success.

C.Symbol. D.Explanation.

3.We can infer from the text that ________.

A.5G world won’t come without AR glasses

B.5G helps to create the artificial intelligence vehicle

C.Apple company is developing AR glasses worldwide

D.Tech companies will face the fact that smartphones may be replaced

4.What will the author probably tell us next?

A.How to fully expand 5G coverage.

B.Smart glasses will become faster and lighter.

C.Why 5G isn’t concentrated in big cities.

D.The importance of infrastructure construction.

For some people, higher education is not just a goal in life, but also an expectation. In the United States, if your parents attended a college or university, there is a good chance that you will, too. Even if your parents did not go to college, you still have a good chance of completing higher education if your family is wealthy.

But your chances are reduced if you come from a needy family, a community with limited educational resources or you simply have no one to follow as an example.

Helping those in need is one of the main ideas behind a strategy of behavioral science called nudge(轻推)theory or nudging. Nudging is a way of changing people’s behavior through indirect suggestion and by supporting positive actions.

A growing number of U.S. colleges and universities look to nudging as way to support poor, minority and first-generation students. They also are using it to increase overall graduation rates. Two common forms of nudging are emails to students and text messages to their mobile phones. Schools and other educational organizations keep in contact with students this way, offering advice and help when needed.

However, Alejandra Acosta---a higher education policy expert at New America notes that there are several qualities a nudge campaign must possess in order to be successful.

Acosta says messages must be timely, meaning they reach college students well before the date by which a student is required to take action. Additionally, nudges should be written clearly and provide as much information as possible. If students start to struggle in class, school officials should not just message them, saying they should seek academic support. The message should give information about what kinds of support the college or university offers and exactly how the student can make use of them. That is why nudges should possess interactive qualities, Acosta says. For example, students should be able to ask questions of school officials or be directed to a website for more information. In addition, colleges and universities must ensure their support services are in place and working as best they can.

When nudges work, they can do a lot of good. In 2018,a nonprofit group launched a nudging campaign at four U.S. community colleges. They worked with nearly 10,000 first-year students at three such colleges in Ohio and one in Virginia. A recent study found that older and minority students who agreed to receive these nudges were 16 to 20 percent more likely to continue into their second year than those who did not.

1.Who is most likely to receive and complete higher education according to the passage?

A.Tony, whose father is the only bread-winner in the family.

B.Jimmy, whose mother is a worker in a small factory.

C.Betty, whose grandmother is a housemaid of a famous university professor.

D.Cathy, whose parents failed to attend college but succeeded in starting a big company.

2.What can we know about nudging?

A.It is rooted in psychological science.

B.It is a way to improve people’s mind.

C.It offers useful and direct advice in time.

D.It helps students via emails and text messages.

3.What is the passage mainly talking about?

A.The problem with higher education.

B.A way for colleges to support students.

C.The popularity of nudging campaign.

D.A national campaign dealing with poverty.

4.Which of the following messages can be employed by nudging?

A.You are supposed to talk to your consultant about your English literature. If not, you are likely to fail the course. Do it as soon as possible.

B.Your performance in English literature is not good. It will be a good idea if you can share your difficulty with your classmates.

C.Dr. Smith is a professor in English literature. He is available every Thursday afternoon from 3 pm to 6 pm. Call 210-432-67 to make an appointment.

D.Do you need any assistance in English literature? If so, we can make an appointment with Dr. Smith for you. It is free of charge.

I have many hobbies and I think fishing put at the top of the list. It is for fishing that has helped me improve my self-control.

My study was not satisfactory because of my impatience three years ago. When seeing that, my father comes up with a good idea and taught me why to fish to overcome my shortcoming. Telling that fishing was full of funs, I followed him without hesitation. Actually, fishing turned out to be more difficult than I had expected. To grasp a skill, I tried hardly and became a skilled fisher. It is amazed that I can focus on my study now. I'd like to share my experience with those who have the same trouble, encouraging them to study with our full devotion and attention.
