In the final minutes of Auburn’s regional semi-final win against North Carolina on Friday night, disaster struck. 1. As he twisted on the floor in pain, it seemed obvious to all in the gym that this was a season-ending and career threatening injury. 2. Carolina players near Okeke had looks of sincere concern for their fallen opponent. Finally, Okeke was helped to his feet and assisted off the playing floor toward the locker room. As he left the floor, all the players of North Carolina made their way to him to express concern and encouragement.

3. All those little things that we consider acts of good sportsmanship are things coaches can require or demand. North Carolina’s kids displayed something much more important: a high level of character. They weren’t just following a coach’s demands or trying to maintain the values of their basketball program. They had sincere concern for their fallen opponent.

And you may not have noticed that college basketball is being flooded with high character kids. It hasn’t always been this way. Back in the 1980’s, academic standards were lower for college admission for athletes. 4. It’s pretty amazing what happens when you raise standards for young people instead of making excuses for them. Simply put, I’m a firm believer that lower standards produce lower quality of effort. If you demand less, you’ll get less. Expecting and requiring more of athletes has produced some pretty favorable results. 5.

A.And the actions on the floor just proved this.

B.His teammates rushed to his side to check on him.

C.We will have less people that can score.

D.The actions of these players go beyond sportsmanship.

E.I’m often impressed with great players and good teams.

F.Star player Okeke went down with a non-contact injury.

G.But in 1986, academic requirements for fresh student athletes were raised.

NASA has big plans for returning astronauts to the moon in 2024, a stepping stone on the path to sending humans to Mars. But where should the first people on the Red Planet land? While there are lots of places on Mars scientists would like to visit, few would make practical landing sites for astronauts. Thanks to the researchers, their newly-published paper in Geophysical Research Letters will help by providing a map of water ice believed to be as little as an inch (2. 5 centimeters) below the surface.

Water ice will be a key consideration for any potential landing site. With little room to spare aboard a spacecraft, any human missions to Mars will have to harvest what’s already available for drinking water. Liquid water can’t last in the thin air of Mars. With so little air pressure, it turns from a solid to a gas when exposed to the atmosphere. On this planet, water ice is locked away underground. Buried water ice changes the temperature of the Martian surface, so the study’s authors relied on heat-sensitive instruments to find ice that astronauts could easily dig up. The authors of the new paper make use of data from spacecrafts to locate water ice that could potentially be within reach of astronauts on the Red Planet.

The paper’s lead author, Sylvain Piqueux of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California said, ‘‘We’re continuing to collect data on buried ice on Mars, aiming to find the best places for astronauts to land.” Piqueux is planning a comprehensive campaign to continue studying buried ice across different seasons, watching how the abundance of this resource changes over time.

1.What’s the benefit of the study?

A.To produce a map of the surface of Mars.

B.To help decide where to land on Mars.

C.To speed up the harvest of ice deep inside Mats.

D.To arouse attention to seasonal changes on Mars.

2.Why is water ice important for any landing site?

A.Because it is the source of power.

B.Because water only exists in the form of solid on Mars.

C.Because it can serve as drinking water.

D.Because astronauts are too busy to collect pure water.

3.How can heat-sensitive instruments tell the location of buried ice?

A.By measuring the surface temperature of Mars.

B.By digging up the surface of Mars.

C.By collecting the data of rocket fuel.

D.By calculating the amount of liquid in the air.

4.In which section of a website may this text appear?

A.Education. B.Travel.

A new exhibition in Beijing examines the experience of China’s millions of empty-nesters, and the sense of loss they feel when their children unavoidably leave home. Held by the Tomorrow Foundation and initialed by actor Huang Xiaoming at the Dachin Contemporary Art Center, the exhibition opened in Beijing on November 9th, and will run until December 9th.

According to Gao Xiaoqi, director of the Dachin Contemporary Art Center, “Empty-nesters are a common social phenomenon. But many young people haven’t realized their parents are actually empty-nesters.” She adds, “We don’t want to place a burden on the viewers when they visit the exhibition, but we do aim to make them feel how their parents felt when their children left home.”

The exhibition is more of an immersive (浸没式) experience rather than simply a gallery to view exhibits. In another area, visitors can put on earphones and listen to some impressive passages describing the parent-child relationship performed by ten stars.

Many visitors were touched by the line: only noticed I stayed at home for 15 days every year, but I didn’t realize from my parents’ eyes that I had been away from home for 20 years,” actress Kong Wei recites.

It was really touching, and it made me realize that I am really important to my parents. All I wanted to do after listening to it was to go back home and spend more time with them,” says Sina Weibo user Zhuizhumengli, a visitor to the exhibition.

“The phenomenon of empty-nesters is quite a challenge since old people’s needs are not necessarily money or other material reliefs. Although many old people have friends and hobbies, they still need their children’s love and attention,” says Huang.

1.Why is the exhibition held?

A.To place a burden on the viewers.

B.To remind the audience to value time.

C.To raise people’s awareness of caring for their parents.

D.To show the importance of relationships between family members.

2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.Who visits the exhibition. B.How the exhibition gets its name.

Dangwal was a teacher in Bankholi village from December 2016 till August 21th this year. The school is attended by about 200 children of seven villages. “I had spent nearly three years teaching children in this school and spending time with the villagers. They always considered me as a member of their own family. That is why when I told them that I have been sent to another school, they could not believe it,” said Dangwal.

On learning his leaving, the villagers told him that they would like to organize a “Goodbye” party for him, on which he agreed but placed a condition that “It should be a small one.” However, on the final day I was surprised to see a large number of villagers gathered near the school with drums.
